This post made me check out the larger image again so i could see the Oswald/Disney statue and I just noticed Oswald's head on the gate/arch/thing near them. Awesome!

And the theres a giant Oswald head in skull rock island :lol
Theres also a balloon oswald in on of the buildings in Main Street usa, you can see it when the map has color in one of the shots.

The ears...it looks too weird.

But I must say, I'm jealous of how well Mickey always seems to sleep. Very peacefully, and his bed looks comfy.

I dunno, I think the ears effect looked good. It's a neat retro look and they accomplish it seamlessly.

The "Ear thing" that the previous poster was referring to was a technique used in Epic Mickey that spins Mickey's ears around his head so that you always see them in their primary position at all times...
Nope, incorrect. The ear thing is only because they had to resort to using a sprite for the ears. Wii not powerful enough to do the whole character model.

The ear thing is the most impressive of things Disney has mandated for the Mickey of today. All the current cartoons have this and Im really glad its being done in this game. Its really cool!

Wait, so Squeenix Mickey's ears fail you:

But, Warren Spector's Octagono ears are good to you?

I personally like Squeenix's version better because he seems so much more retro. The mad/serious look of Spector's is a better fit for the game though.
I dont think you understood what he was talking about...

Anyway, animation and art style looks marvelous!!

Wow. Looks awesome!

I like how they kept the ears looking right no matter what angle he's standing. It always looks wrong when games try to render certain 2D stuff in 3D. Like the Simpsons and Futurama games. Bart's hair just does not look right from the top.

Can't wait. My GF and I will both tag-team this game. I actually pitched the game's concept to one of her friends, a flight attendant who flies down to Disney World a few times per year. She bought a Wii hours later and keeps bugging me about when it'll be released.

Looks Awesomly Super!

Only thing that I fear about this game is that it seems like it's trying to be too many things at once and of the lil touches looked off the last time I saw a gameplay vids (sound effects/ timing of plateforms in a 3D part where he had to jump on turned over boats). Either be Mario or be Zelda . . . I don't need something failing to be either. :/

I don't really mind the Epic Mickey model, but I'd like it a lot better if he was all black instead of blue/purple. Maybe it's better for in game and whatnot, but in portrait it looks pretty disgusting.

Oh please. The Epic Mickey model looks like shit someone just getting into 3ds max/Maya could put out. And the textures are just terrible.
Your wrong dude, that SE Mickey looks lame, Epic Mickey has it's problems and thats the old image of the model from what I can see, I think a screen snap from the opening would be more accurate. :/

The ear thing is distracting but cute. If it weren't for this game I wouldn't have even noticed the detail in the animations. Who cares if it's not realistic, it's
based on
a freaking cartoon?

SE Mickey looks lame? What? :lol

I'm not talking art style or anything. I'm stating fact, that the SE Mickey is the better model. The actual 3d model looks far better.

But by all means, defend it for no reason. The game looks great, but Mickey looks like ass.

Looks epic. I hope the game will truly exhibit Spector's long awaited game design philosophies to the fullest.

For game purposes they're both good. I agree that Epic Mickey's looks a bit weird but the reason has to do with what Epic Mickey is emphasizing.

Just look at the test animations. KH's model definitely looks too stiff to be as expressive as these.

And like I said I think you used the older pic from that flood of shitty pics before revisions were made. I look at this opener and I can see a much better representation of that model . . . pausing it randomly makes Epic Mickey look like much more of a impressive model then that old render shot.

EDIT-^^^ Exactly. For animation reasons just having something look nice doesn't mean its the best fit. Epic Mickey Model looks the way it does because it has to show mickey in a certain way in all angles + it has to be able to animate a certain way that SE never had to worry about.

Too bad I couldn't find any gifs where they inserted the test animations into clips from the cartoons. Those were pretty awesome.

Looks fine in these. Did not fit in the trailer at all, though. Hoping it looks fine in game.

That Epic Mickey model is a year old, its been improved since then.

All you people bitching about the model, here's a super quick "mockup" that shows the two different versions in quick succession. From what I can tell, the only thing that really jumps out at me that's different (that's not because of the pose), is that Mickey's shorts are different. His body is a bit longer in Epic Mickey, but I personally don't think that matters. Other than that, I can't really see anything that makes a difference. I think my biggest problem in general is the large black eyes...I'm not so used to that, lol.

Regardless, I may end up finally getting a Wii for this. I've not had the cash for one in awhile, so Epic Mickey might be the reason for eating ramen for a month or so :lol

I really do hope the production values are improved in the final because the footage I've seen has been a little disappointing. I'm still looking forward to the game regardless.

Glad you like.

animation looks so nice, who is in charge for the character animation? animator from Disney? or people from the production team?

It was written, designed and directed by JPS.

If one Mickey is good then the other Mickey is shit

THAT'S HOW IT HAS TO WORK

:lol Exactly what I was thinking. I do sense an undertone of "damn asian developers touching our beloved western characters" from certain people but I could be crazy...

Those gifs posted above look fantastic. It's obvious the model has been significantly improved since that early model people keep showing in this thread.

Awesomesauce.

This has to succeed. I NEED my Ducktales by Warren Spector.

I assure you that the last thing you want is a Ducktales game created by Warren Spector. Assuming that what you have in your head is the NES days of Ducktales games because I assure you that will not be what he creates.

/end raining on parade

I found the sliding ears extremely distracting and weird in the cinematic. I know Warren said he has this done intentionally because Mickey always shows the full profiles of his ears in 2D! However, this is very strange in 3D because the ear actually cast shadow on to itself and the head... forcing a 2D effect like this in a 3D environment with free camera and lighting is really a bad choice. I dont see there is any problem with Square's version of Mickey in 3D without sliding ears... this theory of keeping the ears in 2D may sound clever but does it really makes specific things better in tangible ways beside a cool theory for gamasutra design interview?

Seems really nice.

But the platforming seems awkward in those stages every time I look at them.

I never noticed them in the cinematic, and would be distracting if they weren't doing the sliding ears.

What's curious to me is that during Mickey's short appearance in KH1 he had sliding ears. I remember finding it weird that they didn't go with that for 2 but I guess they thought it wouldn't work too well during his now prolongued presence in gameplay sequences.

Same for Minnie, she also had sliding ears during the cutscenes (the only merit of her humongous head with dead eyes from the first game) and for some mysterious-but-probably-ear-related reason it was the only model you couldn't rotate in the model viewer.

I had a great 30 minute talk with Warren yesterday, and seeing the new levels and hearing him talk about where he wants the game to go makes me really hopeful he can impress. The two most interesting things he talked about was their fight against the camera, and especially since the player can remove walls, making it a lot harder to make an automatic camera that can position itself correctly, since the game can't be sure what is in the world at any given time.

And all the stuff he had to leave out of the game, and him talking about maybe doing a wasteland of rejected concepts for Epic Mickey, so the game would be populated with rejected character models and so on.

But man, Warren is so god damn excited about the game. He was jittering, acting out and almost jumping up the walls when discussing the project. He seems so pumped about showing what the game really is, since he really hasn't talked or shown what the consequences of your actions or any big story stuff yet.
