Epic: Next gen will be a "substantial leap over current gen"

We'll see how many 1080p let alone 60FPS games come in the next few years.

Should be at least quite a few if the first games for the next consoles are just ports of games designed with these consoles in mind. I would personally love to play a 1080p 60FPS version of Versus XIII...when the ps5 comes out.

720p, 720p as far as the eye can see!

Modified 1080p, or 945p will be targets going forward. If you want, go fire up GT5 or Wipeout HD, and you'll have an idea for the type of resolutions you are looking at. I have also heard new types of AA are likely to be developed because both machines are on relatively similar hardware.

Lot of bitter tears coming in the next year when people realize they could've already had their next-gen visuals on a PC.

You need games to take advantage of next gen hardware. Current gen console games ported up aren't next gen quality. They're still being made with 2005 hardware in mind.

No 1920x1080 for every game ? :(

I hope that will be the 1280x720 of this gen.

I'll be surprised if next gen consoles are half as powerful as my current PC.

And by the looks of it, they want the budgets of "big AAA" games to get even more ridiculous, I wonder if the industry can sustain that.

Sweeney believes that the current crop of high-end PCs are ‘representative' of what players should expect

Hum...Is he talking about the hardware or the software here ?

He is talking about software here is the full quote: "What we're doing on high-end PC's is going to be representative of the future consumer gaming experience and it's going to be awesome."

The jump will be substantial of course....But a quantum leap over 2005 hardware is nothing to brag about really.

As long as full HD is the baseline resolution I'm fine. 720p needs to go.

I guess he's talking about tech demos like Samaritan/Elemental.

Seriously why does this get brought up all the time? Do you seriously think next gen games aren't going to look as good as say Battlefield 3, Planet Side 2, or Crysis 3? That's craziness son. Top of the line pc's at the start of this generation were already more powerful than the ps3 and 360 and the best looking games for pc looked like this.

or this

And despite the weaker hardware xbox 360 and ps3 managed to push games to look like this

"weird" in a bad way? Or 'weird" meaning newer and usable across platforms?

And yet something like ELITE was made for 8-bit hardware. I'll be more impressed when I start seeing the new hardware pushed to make something more than a corridor shooter.

With Oculus Rift coming out in a year or two, I just don't know if next gen consoles can sway me no matter how good the graphics are. My deciding factor will have to be exclusives, unfortunately.

They'll look as good at a much lower frame rate.
Idiotic post.

Shouldn't you be completely fucking over dev studios for the practices of their publisher?

if "next gen" is the measure of hardware power we all try to convince ourselves of and not a measure of time like it should be, then isnt this just a statement of fact?

"when the next generation of consoles actually arrives it will be a ‘substantial leap’ over the experiences we have today."

true. could be 10 years from now though, right, guys? xbox and playstation arent even mentioned.

soooo confused!

20th can't come soon enough. I just want to see the new games. Not really because of graphical fidelity, but more for a sense of scale. That's what impressed me most about the X trailer, and with the extra power Durango/Orbis will have, I'd like to see them take it further

Actually I think next gen consoles will have games that look just like that on a decent PC.

Nice selection of screenshots btw, lets ignore resolutions and fps.

On topic, this guy is just selling his new engine to people.

Did top of the line game this gen look only as good as FEAR at low frame rates.... no so why do you think it'll be different for next gen? We've already seen Star Wars 1313, Watch Dogs, final fantasy, and the unreal engine 4 demo which all blow away current pc games.

And none of those were run on next gen console hardware. They were ran on currently available PC hardware.

All I want if for Epic to do something awesome with that Samaritan setup. Some Bladerunner style detective action game with amazing visuals.

Joking aside that short demo of Star Wars 1313 was pretty goddamn small. There was about 3 feet of space to the side of the player most of the time. You may be on to something.

And Watch Dogs wasn't small at all. It depends on what the devs are going for
