Episode VIII is "The Last Jedi"

Technically neither Luke or Rey are Jedi, as they were not officially ordained/ part of the order.

What if... Luke tracked down the actual Last Jedi Knight who survived the clone wars? (Aka
Mace

I kid!

Kinda.
).

"When gone am I, the last of the Jedi will you be" -Yoda to Luke in ROTJ

The last two Jedi Masters began and effectively completed Luke's training. He didn't have the formal trials, but then neither did Anakin. Luke is a Jedi and both Obi-Wan and Yoda considered him as such.

That's not Adam Driver, that's Edgar Wright.

(it's neither)

(but now I really want Edgar Wright to make a Star Wars movie)

(after Ava DuVernay gets her crack it)

You gotta wonder what's gonna be in the crawl. The events of TFA?
Well, uh, yeah! But then there was likely a small time jump before Rey took off, which gives them plenty of space to fill in some additional place setting along the lines of "Celebrating their first victory against the FIRST ORDER blah blah blah" or "Reeling from teh destruction of the central capital blah blah blah", or "After his embarrassing defeat to Mary Sue, Kylo Ren blah blah blah" or "After big boom boom planet went boom blah blah blah".

I'm betting the crawl will talk about the First Order regrouping after their loss at Starkiller Base, and their plans to lash back at the Resistance, while KYLO REN resumes his search for the last Jedi, Luke Skywalker, blah blah.

We'll probably catch back up w/ the First Order as they're arriving back at their home base, with Kylo meeting up w/ Snoke in the flesh to report on what went wrong.

THEN we'll cut back to Luke taking the saber from Rey.

So, you are guessing no significant time jump?

As much as I love Edgar Wright (I have ever since I discovered Spaced as a teen - the first 'alternative' director I discovered besides big names like Spielberg, and the one who got me interested in that entire side of the industry), I don't want him to make Star Wars. Let him make his own stuff. Similarly to how, in retrospect, a Wright Ant-Man movie would never have worked - the movie might have been entertaining, but it wouldn't be a true Wright movie. This is one of those directors that just needs to fly, unburdened by studio meddling or a greater canon to fit into.

That said, I would obviously be over the moon if he ever would do it. The only reason I ever started watching those Marvel movies was the knowledge that Edgar Wright would one day be a part of it. That didn't turn out so great for me. But yeah, point is, let him do his own stuff.

If he did do it, it would be something special though. But it would probably need to be a spinoff movie, something that allows him to go a bit more specific. I can see a bounty hunter movie or something similar working for him. It'll be interesting to see how his next movie goes, which is supposed to be a bit less of a comedy. Can't wait.

Huh. There's usually at least a few years in between each saga film. Not sure how I feel about this.

The other films weren't so blatant in their "trilogy building" for lack of a better expression. They mostly had stories that concluded and could be built upon if they chose. TFA literally ended in the middle of a scene.

I'd argue that Empire ended up pretty much in the middle of things as well. Not a definitive ending in any way.

The only movie that did was New Hope, and even that ended with Darth Vader spinning away in a 'I'll be baaaaack' manner, just in case they managed to get a sequel.

I do love how many of the movies ended in parties. I'd love to have a Star Wars space party at the end of 9.

I don't really mind Luke dying, per se. I just hope he goes out on a peaceful note, like having him fall asleep for the last time as the suns set on Tatooine in Episode 9, sorta mirroring Yoda's death in ROTJ. After everything he's done in the OT, I think he deserves a positive ending.

I don't really want him to be killed by the big bad just to hype him up. We already did that with Han in TFA.

I love that Rian Johnson uses social media, and releases stuff like that.

But holy shit does that title look good in the crawl.

It's a great title. Conversely, The Force Awakens always felt a little lame to me, so it feels like an improvement, even though if from this point onwards, countless Star Wars fans are going to have to elaborate on which Star Wars film they're actually referring to when they make reference to "Jedi".

Empire is the closest but even then it was more like that scene was ending and you were wondering where they are going next. Ditto on the space parties lol.

It's kinda weird. The opening crawl could very well give us more information we don't see onscreen.. which is what the crawl has always been in the past, but in this case, literally no time has passed since TFA. So I do wonder how much new information we get and how much of it they're willing to explain with words instead of actually showing it in the film itself. I suppose there could have been a bunch of shit they can fill us in on though that we didn't see while the camera was on Rey/Leia, and then Luke, as there could have been what.. 20-30 minutes, maybe even an hour after the destruction of Starkiller base (lots of cuts of Rey walking up to get to Luke)?

It will be very interesting to see how they handle it.

I think my biggest question about the beginning crawl is.. how much time has actually passed and what information have we missed (not shown onscreen) in regard to the FO?

Really, just an hour? Upon rewatching it I definitely got the sense at least a couple of days had passed between the destruction of Starkiller Base and Rey leaving to see Luke. I figure there's enough time that we could get some information about the Republic being in chaos and the First Order regrouping. I imagine it will probably give us some information on some of the new characters that will be introduced.

I could be wrong (the hour is a flat out guess) but it makes no sense to wait more than a second to get to Luke and I don't think much time passed since the destruction of SK base for this very reason.

Lightspeed doesn't take too long. As far as I know, it's usually a few minutes in the main films. Don't remember a trip being longer than that, at least without notification of some kind.

Technically neither Luke or Rey are Jedi, as they were not officially ordained/ part of the order.

What if... Luke tracked down the actual Last Jedi Knight who survived the clone wars? (Aka
Mace

Mace is Snoke

Will we get our first promo photo in March you Reckon or nothing until celebration?

I'd be shocked if they didn't wait an extra few weeks when Celebration hits. Although I will say, they showed some photos of R1 before we got a trailer so there's hope for that. I don't THINK we saw any photos of TFA before the trailer though. Main films might follow a different path since they're so much more important to fans.

All the old Jedi would be 100+ years old..

(though maybe that's not a problem for some species)

Let's predict the opening pan down/up.

My take: pan down to starfield over water, with a tiny jut of land in the distance, to the right - a tiny figure stands and a lightsaber ignites.... and we cut to a training scene with Rey at night.

It's confirmed to start literally the moment the scene in TFA ends. Their scene, anyway.

Ok, so this is the midpoint in the trilogy. So we're gonna need to end on a down note. How dark do you think they're going to try to make this one? Obviously it's not going to be as bleak as Rogue One, and they already played the "surprise" major character death card in Force Awakens, so I'm curious what they're going to do with it.

I hope the opening scene is something related to Kylo

betting Rey gets her ass kicked like Luke did with Vader in ESB

someone is losing a limb

You wait Johnson will just start it there without the intro, play a scene out between Rey and Luke, and then cut to "A long time ago..."

That would be a horrible decision, IMO. Removes a lot of the "oh wow we're in space, the possibilities are endless" that makes the opening of main SW films so fantastic and imaginative. THEN we zoom into the conflict.
