ESPN Next Gen Madden Sim MNF Chargers vs Colts HEY NFL Do something about this

It always hurts to be reminded that we aren't ever going to get a properly done NFL game because the NFL is a piece of shit in some areas. NFL 2K5 no joke was probably my top 3 played PS2 game along with FFX and another game. The really nailed so much with that game and if it was in existence today, we would really have something special.

passing game was signifcantly worse in AP2K8 than it was in NFL2K5. Just couldn't get into that one. But hey, microbudget at the beginning of the gen after years of not making a football game, i don't hold it against them.

Just look at the line-play.

The players aren't just suction-cupped to each other.

One D-tackle tries to jump up to block the pass and the O-tackle pushes him backward mid-air.

That's not even POSSIBLE on the Madden Engine because it's all 100% canned animations and no realistic physics or collision detection whatsoever.

I feel like in all the madden hate, the times the madden team did do something right gets lost. The madden 13 physics engine was ambitious and did lead to some non-canned animations and collisions, though before-the-collision AI is still pretty scripted. What's more, the same year madden introduced that engine, they also introduced a replacement for franchise mode, a new menu layout, a new presentation for the game, and new commentators. Madden 13 was a big and very ambitious release, which is what makes Madden 25 look so lame, like they just added "play as owner" to the Madden 13 Career Mode (in a underwhelming way by slightly modifying the coach option), updated the rosters, did a straight port to next-gen consoles and called it a day.
Madden 13 was flawed -- the game is very interception-heavy and the physics are a bit buggy -- but it was trying things, whereas madden 25 is just madden 13 with a new coat of paint.

As someone who only just recently got more serious into football beyond a casual fan, and by proxy playing Madden again (08 on pc), this thread makes me extra sad there is no 2k version to compete.

What is the # of frames per animation in the Madden engine? (Not the overall game FPS, I mean the # of frames in each animation?)

All the passing in the video looked like FLICK-Passes - I saw literally like 3 frames in the passing animations: the pull back, launch and then release - all in THREE frames... that's pathetic. It's the choppiest throwing motion I've ever seen. All the passes FLICK out of the QB's hands and then they fly on a rope to the receivers.

Shouldn't all the game animations run at the same rate as the game engine itself?

If the game is running at 30FPS, or 60FPS, shouldn't each animation itself have at least 15 to 20 frames in them to match it and make it all look fluid and cohesive?

I think that's a huge problem. The # of frames per animation in Madden are not matching the overall game FPS. It's probably done on purpose so they can hide the fact that the game itself is pure garbage and they have a talentless team of programmers working on it every year.

The fact that they left that as-is and just made the CROWD more realistic, as opposed to cardboard cut-outs, is just disturbing.

It is accurate. NFL has exclusive contracts for all their merchandising and licensing. Football games are no different.

Nope, they don't. Although Nike is the official jersey provider, and they make a variety of fan gear, there are lesser licensing opportunities for a variety of smaller clothing manufacturers. Nike's license just means Adidas, Reebok, and the other big brands can't produce NFL clothing.

And regardless of whether the NFL has other exclusive contracts, the question was who approached the other party with the proposal for exclusive video game rights? Did the NFL approach EA, or did EA approach the NFL? The latter seems far more likely, due to the fact that 2K was starting to become a bigger rival that could take some of EA's market share. The NFL only cares about making money. The exclusivity deal has to be worth more than what the NFL could have made by selling licensing to both EA and 2K for it to be worthwhile to the NFL.

I remember Madden 06 when the 360 launched....woof that was a bad game. looks like they're going to do it again.

No, they aren't doing that again. Hence why the game's graphics aren't a major step up.

Instead of focusing on graphics, they focused on bringing everything that was in current gen to next gen at launch on top of adding some new features.

Yup, that was rough. 2K had the superior product, and they vastly undercut the price of EA's Madden ($20 vs. $60, the retail prices at release). When I heard news of the NFL exclusivity deal, I knew what was up: EA was scared.

" This greatly reduced Madden sales that year; one EA Sports developer recalled that "t scared the hell out of us".[2]"

"A source close to the negotiations said it was at a spring 2004 off-site meeting attended by top NFL officials that the league determined it would take the league license exclusive. GameSpot was told the league put the license up for bid and that EA was among as many as five software publishers competing for it. An EA spokesperson said today, "Obviously, exclusives are more expensive. We are most certainly paying a premium.""

The NFL cares about their controlling their image (and obviously money too) -- easier to do that when they only have one game to worry about instead of multiple games.

It's part of the reason why you'll never see tattoos in Madden (unlike other sports games like NBA 2K14).

I thought they allowed tattoos once before. Maybe it was Madden 2003. I do remember because you could even put them on created players.

Yeah last gen versions had the ability to get tattoos but the NFL caused that to be taken out.

NFL wants a clean cut image and I'm assuming that they feel that tattoos are "trashy".

I think the Madden games 'overhaul' every 3 years - I remember Madden 10 being a big upgrade too.

These games have to be done 8 months after the last ones ship. They don't have time to overhaul everything every year.

That said there is desperate need of some disruption in this market. AFAIK Madden sales have kind of stagnated, which is amazing considering that the popularity of football has exploded and there are more consoles than ever.

I think sports games would be better served just becoming a service instead of yearly release. Pay your 60 bucks a year and you get constant updates engine changes roster updates and what not. Kill the 8 months dev cycle.

I would honestly love this but I don't think that most people are ready for that.

Reposted (I think?). Someone who's seen the original will have to confirm.

to me, the most important part of a sports simulation is making sure it looks and feels like a real game. these animations are so stiff and look so fake, and i don't get any sense of speed or power from the hits. the worst part is looking at the o-line and the d-line clashing, it doesn't look at all like it should.

(haven't played NFL game since 2k5, expected more advancement in 8 years)

Nah... Some developers actually put out a good product every year-- NBA2K and MLB The Show for example.

Last time I bought a Madden, Vince Young was on the cover. Dude's probably working at Arby's now. One entry a gen is fine with me as long as Madden remains my only option.

Someone show them TV presentation.

How the shit does that look even better than next gen Madden, which is releasing 6 years later? Damn.

The NFL should realize that good NFL video games lead to more fans, and do some shit about this travesty of a game that appears to be coming out.

Why does the video keep getting pulled? Because the game looks like shit and Tiburon can't take it? Fuck you, Tiburon. You untalented [expletive deleted].

No reason for why Madden next-gen looks like current gen.

I held out for next gen. Looks like I'm holding out til next year.

(this is the only genre where I'm a shameless graphics whore, promise.)

I don't think that would make the game better though. What they need is competition.

You've have to be kidding me. EA THINKS WE ARE IDIOTS!!!

As if this whole thing couldn't get any more bizarre, look at these tweets from Phil Frazier, former executive producer for Madden.

Owen Good ‏@owengood 1h ESPN corrected me, said they did not reupload today's Madden next-gen video. I asked why they took it down. They told me to ask EA Sports.

Phil Frazier ‏@Fillycheze 47m @owengood That footage is clearly 360. My guess is the capture team didnt realize they had to use X1. It was probably pulled for that reason

Owen Good ‏@owengood 38m I honestly—hand to God—thought ESPN had screwed up this morning, and used Xbox 360 Madden footage, calling it Xbox One.

Phil Frazier ‏@Fillycheze

@owengood This is not far from reality. EA probably marked it as X1 footage by mistake. Pulled it because it's not. That's 360 for sure.

.@Fillycheze But here's Saints-Dolphins, week 4 on ESPN. Description: "Yes, that is next-gen technology at work." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SE3wLTZDtM Â…

Phil Frazier ‏@Fillycheze

@owengood I dunno. That was added by ESPN. Very possible they thought it was next-gen. Strange that there is no X1 watermark on wk 4 footage

Im incredibly bitter towards EA and the NFL for what theyve done to my formerly favorite gaming genre and at the same time I thank them for allowing me to expand my horizons and experience new things that arent utter CRAP.

March2014 the exclusive deal expires. Please ANYONE SONY, 2K, ANYONE have some balls and bid for that license. I want to enjoy video game football again. I dont want o go through another 7 years of mediocrity, anger, and sadness brought about by the thoughts of what could have been... :'[

Thanks to posts in this thread, I went out and found a copy of All-Pro Football 2K8 this afternoon. [/ThreadHijack]

I hope you don't mean non-game play presentation because that was horrible. Remember the fake urban feel with the "crib" in 2k5? Remember the cheap ESPN presentation and horrible announcing. The only thing good about 2k5 was actual gameplay.

"Crib" crap aside, the ESPN presentation in NFL 2K5 was very well done and accurately mirrored the telecast graphics package for the time. Sure, there weren't "real" announcers calling the action, but Berman did a pretty good job with halftime, post-game, and weekly recaps while Trey Wingo was just getting his feet wet.

Authentic broadcast presentation like we saw in NFL 2K5 wasn't even close to being replicated in sports video games again until EA finally did it with NCAA Basketball 10, which had dual presentation packages from CBS Sports and from ESPN.

But aren't coaches in Madden 25 on current-gen lacking headsets? The footage uploaded to ESPN had coaches with headsets, which would suggest that it is next-gen footage.

They really think were that stupid. And TBH theyre justified in believing that given the amount of people who flock to buy this crap year in and out, all while KNOWING what theyre purchasing is CRAP. -_____-

I used to love football games, especially the 2k ones since I had a Dreamcast. EA's bullshit killed all the enthusiasm years ago. They'll never lose the license now that they won't even have an college football game anymore.

Haven't bought a football game since 2k5. Glad I'm not supporting that shit company. The game doesn't look any different from 7 years ago.
