Eternal Sonata for PS3 in North America

I just placed an order, now to wait until it ships over here in Europe. I've confimed the game is gonna be released here, but at full price (70€) in February 2009, i'm not going to wait and pay that much.

Going to pick it up this weekend or sometime next week, not in a hurry to play it until the FAQs comes out~

Have to finish LBP first :)

Glad I held off on the 360 version. I'll pick this one up after it bombs and hits $20 in early 2009.

Yup! I'm ordering this (PS3) as soon as I'm done with all other 15 games that are coming this/next month.

Hate starts to settle in after you've played that first hour five times.
Why do you play the first hour five times?

Anasui Kishibe said:
make it 20, actually
why? because game's slightly but just slightly repetitive. But just slightly

Specially when the enemies at the end are the same that in the first hour, with just a different color palette and more hp. I ended up using the same attack for everything, AAAAAY, AAAAAY, AAAAAY. I still enjoyed the game, took me 23 hours to beat it in 4 days.

Does this have anything to do with the game got multiplatform'd?

Because I remember GAF praising the game a lot, back then when it was exclusive.

just tried the demo.

I was really really looking forward to this port. But strangely, this game doesn't seem all that great once I actually played it. Mostly game play complaints, and some minor weirdness in design decisions.

I really love the art style and the quality of work, but the game play turned out to be a bit of a turn-off...

I just stopped playing the game halfway through on the 360 because the gameplay became monotonous. There is a thread on here titled Why Eternal Sonata Sucks and it pretty much explains the gameplay. Not that I agree that it completely sucks or that I agree with everything said in that thread.

for example, can you heal party members using magic/skills while not in combat? are healing items the ONLY way?

Yes

can you take items out of the pouch and back into inventory? I accidentally filled my pouch and can't take anything back out.

Yes, when not in battle.

is there a purpose to the town in the demo? no inns? no healing springs? anything?

why is it so easy to die in this game? 2 hits and Polka dies. Blocking doesn't reduce damage all that much either.

It does though this aspect in the PS3 version may be modified. Even on the 360 Polka always took alot of damage. You get multiple party members to choose from through so you can use her when you want.

This game is gorgeous though. Personally for the time I played it I enjoyed it.

Pre-release, yes. Post-release, you aren't remembering right. You don't have to be a fanboy to recognize mediocre tripe.

I suppose that for a starving man, however, even Chef Boyardee can taste as good as steak.

Played the first hour of this with a friend last week. Gorgeous looking game, that's for sure. Battle system seemed to lack a bit of depth, but not much can be said about that so early in the game. The things I really disliked were the characters and their dialogue. Long-winded conversations that didn't go anywhere. Characters and story are always part of the reason I play an rpg and this game appeared to be lacking in that category

"this" what? the backlash? i can't speak for everyone, but I sure can remember what GAF said about the game a copupla months after its release. I can just say I was already bored five hours in: pathetic character development, ZERO plot twists and bad story, repetitive combat and enemies (look at Accident's post..), long ass dialogue sequences which you can skip, but you wont because you'd feel like missing parts of the incredibly dull story, and you certainly don't want to

it isn't a BAD game, but it's really a mediocre one, a 5.5. in my book.

Visually great though, and Chopin's music is splendid (well no shit)

If that was me then I'm still praising it. It's certainly better than most of the mediocre "next-gen" JRPGs released so far. And, by all accounts, the PS3 version is even better!

Don't worry Awntawn, some of us that survived ES on the 360 know exactly what you meant.
No, I don't. Yes, there are some recolored enemies, but by the time you encounter them you have a lot more options and characters to use in the fights. Also, once the battle system levels up a few times it becomes very fast. And if you tire of fighting (which didn't happen to me in this game, unlike the majority of JRPGs) you can just skip most of the battles.

As far as the story goes, I liked what I saw of it. The direction of the cut scens I thought was exceptional. That's why I was very disappointed with the game. It seemed all of the work went into the graphics and the cut scenes and the gamer was left with a shell for gameplay. I liked the characters also.

I guess you haven't read the old 360 thread huh. Most of jrpg gaf hates it.

So I'm over an hour into the game. I really don't get the hate... I like it so far.

Beginning is great.

It will come. Give it time. I think it really started going downhill around ch 3-4ish. Then it just goes faster downhill. Then it's unstoppably down hill until the conclusion.

I don't mean to rain on your parade -- I'm glad you enjoy it at 3 hours in -- but, I think a lot of people enjoyed it 3 hours in.

When it was just screenshots, the game was fucking amazing.

Then I had to play the battles, which are atrocious, and I put it down after 10 hours.

what about the Chopin sequences? Dude, I'm all about learning things about great personages and stuff, but god those were slow paced as fuck, and LONG

Yeah they are long.

You can skip those scenes since they are just about his life, I watched the first few of them before I realised that and started to skip them, i'm sure you can go back and watch them later on though if you want to learn more.

I skipped the second one lol.

There's an option in the menu where you can play the piano music and read the subs from those scenes.

Anyway, ign gave it an 8.7 more than the xbox version (8.3). Gameage gave it a B (They gave the xbox 360 version a -B). Not bad.

Gamespot gave it an 8.5 and said its better than the 360 version as well, even graphically. ;)

I don't understand why so many gaf members complain about this game. It seems to be getting better scores than most of todays rpgs. Ign scored it higher than lost odyssey, tales of vesperia, blue dragon. wierd...

BTW guys, some funny error I found in the gaming age review:

For a game that places a lot of emphasis on music, Eternal Sonata doesn't disappoint. Akira Yamaoka composes most of the tunes, whose credits you've probably seen in games like the Silent Hill series (Sound Director, Sound Producer, Composer/Arranger), the popular Beatmania series, and a few other well-known franchises. His music in Eternal Sonata is fantastic treat, with quite a few memorable tunes.

:lol

Think this is what I'll do too.

Played the demo and it's honestly not something I think I can enjoy for a long while, and it doesn't sound like the gameplay evolves all that much as you go on either.

I would love to know this as well. We don't get this dilemma often.

Fady K, yes that too. I actually expected the reverse to happen since it's a year old port and expectations from games are getting higher by the day...

Even though I finished this game on the 360,after i'm done with all the new games coming out till the end of the year,I'm going to rent this for sure on the PS3 down the line.
He said it look better on the PlayStation 3 than on the Xbox 360, because the colors seem to pop even more. To me that doesn't sound like better graphic to me. It just sound like he was looking for a reason to make the PS3 sound better. As for the IGN 8.7 to 8.3 have some of you thought the reviewers could be different people, and one person might not have enjoyed the game as much as the next. Enternal Sonata s not a bad game but it not worth a double dip. the game got an 8.5 for both the PS3 and 360

Looks like someone is in denial and searching for reasons...

I don't think it's a coincidence to see all 3 reviews to have the same view/opinion. While yes there might be different reviewers on the second version, they do have meetings with the team and therefore the past reviewer. Their scores have to be consistent and analyse the new contents added plus how faithful the port is. I don't think a new reviewer is going to ignore all that and doesn't compare the ports.

It's been shown many times that colors CAN look different between the two systems. It could be a legitimate critique.
