Eurogamer: SNES Mini currently in development

Why would SE not be involved?

Why would they be? Consider:

-- Square-Enix SNES games were only released for the Wii VC. WiIU and N3DS VC never got them.
-- Square-Enix publishes and sells its own games on digital storefronts (Google Play, App Store, Steam)

Unless Nintendo is willing to pay SE well and/or works out a royalties system, SE has no reason to put its stuff on SNES Mini.

It's so weird that the impending release of SNES would lead to ending production on the NES. There is massive demand for the classic, and the internals will be essentially identical. What's the conflict? I don't understand why they can't do both- beyond incompetence.

I can't argue that Nintendo is ending production of the NES Classic while they still have plenty of demand. To answer your question of "why", here's an economic definition of scarcity:

Scarcity (also called paucity) is the fundamental economic problem of having seemingly unlimited human wants in a world of limited resources. It states that society has insufficient productive resources to fulfill all human wants and needs.

Factory space? Plus if the internals are identical, that means they have to choose to use those chips for one or the other. Makes sense to me.

heck they're releasing the Mana collection physically, lol.

People who are in the market for a SNES Mini wouldn't buy SE SNES games separately, it's a pure gain for them

Why aren't Nintendo allowed to release SuperFX games now?

Too lazy to try to resolve the situation. See Donkey Kong (arcade).

I'm still sour as fuck about the NES Mini, but I'll try even harder for this one.

God damn it.

At least in this case I already own the controller (imported SFC Wii controller from Japan).

I paid $40 for the damned NES controller. The consoles are generic and useless to me, but the controllers are quite special. Real new Nintendo controllers that are virtually identical to the classics and which work with Wii, Wii U, Analogue NT Mini...

I love the SNES but almost don't want this thing to exist just because of all the frustration and ill-will it's going to create.

Take pre-orders on your site, Nintendo. Cash in advance, no returns except to replace defective units, everyone who orders one gets one. There will be no excess stock to worry about, no insane mark-ups from scalpers, and no tears shed by loyal consumers.

Don't forget Final Fantasy was on the NES Mini.

I'm already crying knowing that this would be impossible to get I already gave up on trying to get one and it's not even officially announced yet. #YayOptimism

I would love to have a SNES mini, but I'd rather Nintendo focus on a good Virtual Console for the Switch at this point. The NES mini was a shit show regarding availability. Regardless, I'll still probably buy one...somehow.

While this "seems" like the best way to handle things, Nintendo doesn't have unlimited production capabilities. I feel like I'd be even more angry at Nintendo in this scenario. Especially if I paid upfront for something I couldn't return, only to find out I need to wait a few months for it to arrive.

They should re-release the original hardware. With the cartridge slot and all.

Otherwise, make a Nintendo AppleTV like device that's basically a dumb terminal to the Nintendo eShop to buy Virtual Console games.

Soldered on 30 emulated games is kind of a let down to me. This seems like the Atari and Genesis toys you see near checkouts in the home stores.

I really do not get the appeal. It's more junk in my life I don't want.

I'm glad you guys are excited for it though. I'm not trying to sound like I'm knocking it. Stating only what I wish Nintendo would do or if they have a better idea I'm open to that too.

I love reading all your stories about the NES mini. I'm not trying to be a pessimistic old man. I promise.

Honestly, I think they could successfully do both. Give us an Apple TV-like device that gets the same Virtual Console service that they'll eventually have on Switch. On the side, continue doing limited runs of "consoles" like this for collectors. I made a whole thread yesterday where I detailed this exact idea.

lol

That would never happen, the tech is so ancient that no one manufactures the internals involved. It would be expensive to reproduce it.

Not only that, the sound chip for the SNES is from Sony. Good luck licensing that.

How about a more expensive Classic SNES with the same hardware?

Sorry, I should have stated that it obviously won't happen, but I just assumed it was so far fetched it was obvious.

Gotta be careful on the internet. People take you seriously.

I need to get both American and Japanese designs.. I love them both !

Makes no sense that this is partly the reason for the NES mini being discontinued. Depending on your age and gaming history you might not give a shit about one of them. Why not continue to sell both?

If anything the behaviour of Nintendo with the NES mini could put people off buying this one

"Why do I need a Super NES Mini when I have this NES Mini?"

"Why do I need a Super NES Mini when I have this NES Mini?"

If you loved both consoles you'd be interested in both. If you were happy with a NES mini then you're just not interested enough in a SNES to justify the cost.

It's just Nintendo throwing money away again

That same kind of post happened when the NES Mini was revealed and the person that suggested it was serious because he wanted to use his old NES cartridges.

So yes, there are people that stated the farfetched seriously and not jokingly.

I would assume the NES classic had some sort of royalties involved. Comparitivley though, FF was on all NES classics, and the Famicom classic had FF3 as well, so I'm not sure why they would be fine with that, but suddenly against putting some games on a potential SNES classic.

If it's real, I just hope they release the European design in Europe, with games in English on it. Wouldn't really want an american styled one.

Hopefully they remember to put in wireless controllers this time instead of controllers with 3 feet cords. It's 2017 ffs!!!

I've been trying to figure out the reason for the short controller cord other than stupidity. I've narrowed it down to 2 reasons:

1. I read a rumour they built the Classic out of left over parts Nintendo had lying around and maybe had to use up short cords (can't think of what it would have been left over from though)
2. To go back to the main menu you need to hit the reset button on the console so you would need to have the console very close to you anyway (was there another short cut way to exit a game back to the main menu?)

These mini consoles are glorified ad campaigns to give people a quick hit of Nintendo nostalgia drug, which they will quickly take away, hopefully enticing people to buy a Switch. It's about selling people's memories of Nintendo back to them to remind them that Nintendo is still relevant.
