Evolution 2016 lineup revealed, includes Pokken, doesn't include Street Fighter IV

Called it
  • Street Fighter V
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee
  • Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
  • Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR-
  • Mortal Kombat X
  • Killer Instinct
  • Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
  • Tekken 7
I didn't see that coming
  • Pokkén Tournament
R.I.P.
  • Ultra Street Fighter IV

How the fuck are they even going to play Pokken. Competitive scene for that game died as soon as they announced it didn't have splitscreen.

Unless they use arcade cabinets that no one has any practice on. That's like having a demo tournament as a main game at EVO.

Dumb. But whatever. I doubt it gets played on Sunday and exposure will be secluded to some Nintendo stream. Will likely have some of the least entrants.

LAN.

And still more popular than most games on that list. Instead let's give room to 3 Nintendo party games.

It has LAN. That's how they're running it. Two monitors, two Wii Us, two copies of Pokken.

Let me know what top players will be touching SF4 after FEB16, and not focusing on SFV and the CPT. Let me know, I'll wait.

Well, none now that USFIV isn't going to be at Evo. Kind of a ridiculous question to ask.

If it was at Evo? I'm pretty sure plenty of pros would touch it. 8 years of practice just doesn't go away because you picked up the sequel. And USFIV would have more entrants at Evo then the majority of that list if it was there this year.

People really tripping over SF4 not being there? It won't even be worth it. The new hotness will be SF5 and all the top players will be practicing and training for that anyway. Not many people would be as focused on it with SF5 out and you'd probably get a crappier tournament overall.

SF4 players are moving to SF5.

Melee and Smash 4 players are completely different communities.

Are they? If they are, is it just because tournaments are replacing 4 with 5? If Melee ceased to have a tournament scene, would most of the Melee community just migrate to Smash 4? I think it's a tad bit ridiculous that there supposedly isn't room to support 2 street fighter games. It was just as shitty when 4 came out and TOs stopped supporting 3rd Strike.

Honestly it's better for SF4 to be out. We gotta focus on the new game.

Plus it's going to be refreshing for the salt over that game to die down. At least until people find out they're shit at SF5, too.

All opinions are my own

Checkmark GG, X out MKX and I agree

Also maybe put some kind of a halfway point between a check and a line for Smash 4

Also I agree Pokken is a moneyhat but it might be potentially cool. KI was a moneyhat too and that game had a cool showing last year though I still don't care a whole lot about it.

Street Fighter players are moving because they're SF players, not USFIV players. Melee players play Melee. Not Smash as a whole. This is one of the many reasons the game's out of the ordinary.

No, Melee players wouldn't play Smash 4.

I really doubt it. And again, for every player who played both Smash games last year, there were around 4 who only played one or the other

Well that's an unexpectedly cool feature to include in this day and age.

But really I don't think anyone plans to really take that game seriously. That's like a Naruto or DragonBall Z game getting in.

Once again, for all the unbelievers in this thread:

I. WAS. RIGHT.

Who thought Nintendo were too cheap to subsidize Pokken tourneys when they did the same thing for Splatoon last year? Oh ye of little faith.

I'm also pleased as punch that USF4 got the boot. Out with the old, in with the new, I say.

If Melee ceased to exist, the community would probably just dissolve rather than migrate. Most Melee players don't like Smash 4, to put it mildly. There are some exceptions of those who play both, but they're very few.

Street Fighter V
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
Mortal Kombat X
Killer Instinct
Guilty Gear Xrd R
Pokken Tournament
Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3
Tekken 7 FR

No USFIV

Wow. UMvC3 again? Pokken is really boring and Tekken 7 isn't even out. Other than that all others were expected.

Mike "next question " Ross.

Great lineup. Glad to see Genesis 3 setting the bar for all future tournaments.

Marvel has roots in evo as deep as street fighter. If the tables were flipped we would still have a SF game there no matter how out dated it is.

Yea, no. Even if 4 was in 5 would be where the money is. People like Daigo and Momochi are going to be grinding SfV religiously, 8 hours a day regradless. If Western players wanna keep up, when are they going to playing sf4? Let me know.

If the money is there why not? Nintendo should really push for it. Pot bonus, etc.

The mechanics in melee are waay different than smash 4 to the point where the two communities just arent compatible and have completely different sets of top players. At least from what the announcer guy in this stream said, the transition from SF4 to SF5 seems much smoother (i know nothing about the games)

The melee community kept their scene alive for all these years before they got EVO slots. I doubt they would just move over to Smash 4.

There are some outliers who drop-in and drop-out, but if USF4 and SF5 ran the same tournament it would be the same damn top players in both without question. I don't think his explanation in unfair: It'd be a 2000 man tournament with no real reason to justify the expense and hastle of running that. They could barely manage USF4 pools when it was the undisputed main event game.

New game kills the old. Melee is the only real outlier.
