Evolution 2016 lineup revealed, includes Pokken, doesn't include Street Fighter IV

Last EVO there were around 600 players who entered both Smash games. Each one individually had over 1800 players though, so for every player playing both games, each game had 2 only playing that game. That means around 4 out of 5 smash players only played one or the other

I think it was actually 517 or so players that entered both.

Melee is such a wacky outlier lol.

That community is insanely dedicated.

And all this started because of a charity poll.

Smash 4 is not Brawl either. Sure many Melee players still prefer Melee, but Smash 4 is growing and has a respectable player base. Crazy how both games are coexisting.

That's definitely changed a lot now. Genesis 3 had like 1,000+ each for Melee and Sm4sh IIRC. Genesis 3's final day was done in a threater with 3,000+ seats and nearly every seat filled.

SF5 is not a fundamentally different game from 4 and its population at large will move on especially with the esports model Capcom has going on. This isn't at all a comparable situation. The SF community isn't as big as Smash to have the luxury of splitting into two and still be substantial, either.

And there's no point in sticking with an old game when the new one is perfectly fine.

I will miss top-level SF4, though. It reached heights SF and really fighting games in general never been before due to the sheer amount of experience of its players.

People mad at both Smash games, but Marvel 3 keeps getting lower entrant numbers each year and it still keeps getting featured in the roster.

Then what the hell is UMVC3 doing there?

I imagine Marvel lives on in part just due to the fact there's not really any other tag team mechanic fighter out there that would pull even remotely close numbers to it. It's down, but still has a sizable pull with no real direct replacement.

I still think Marvel would have squeezed in this year regardless, but next year and forward if anything comes out that's remotely comparable that is big I could easily see it getting bumped off (maybe KoF14 if that turns out well?).

Even if you want to pull the viewer/registrant numbers Marvel still outdid multiple games last year including Tekken 7 by nearly a 2:1 ratio, and Killer Instinct by MORE than a 2:1 ratio. It's weird, but any way you try to slice it Marvel refuses to die.

Thats not what I said. Other guy said every top player will step away from USF4 when SF5 is released, pretty far-fetched to say every player.
Last year there was over 2000 entrants for USF4, I bet at least 1500 (if not more) knew they were never going to win it or even make top 8, but they just entered for the enjoyment of a tournament. I bet those 1500 would enter this year had it remained at EVO, I bet Pokken doesnt even get 1000 entries lol
Anyways rant over, RIP SF4. Im sure the smaller events will still hold it

Well that is the whole point, there is too much over lap.

Hoping a game fails cause your preferred game didn't get in is extremely petty.

That could be due to realities of training two fighters to the highest level, and may not reflect community diversity, overlap or willingness to unite on one.

It doesn't look like they're closing the door on USF4 forever

Street Fighter V is set to make its debut at Evo 2016. What factors prompted the replacement of Ultra Street Fighter IV?

Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar: Street Fighter V is a brand new game and a vast majority of people are playing it. The success of their beta tests confirms this. Street Fighter IV has had an incredible run of seven years, and we hope people continue to play this game, but for this year Evo will be running Street Fighter V only (puts on Guile shades).

melee community is the best community i've ever had the pleasure of being around.

Well...bummer. First year I'm going to Evo and I have no idea what to do about tickets (they'll go up when?) or which hotel to even book. Mandalay Bay because it's where the finals will be? Something on the Monorail so it'll be easier to get to the convention center? I'm also terrified that someone's about to update all the website information while I'm asleep and I'm going to miss out on booking basically anything. :(

...

You have never been to Vegas?

That is a 1hr and 22min walk from one to the other. (4.25 mile walk) IN JULY in Vegas? what the hell are you thinking?

Cabs sure, people can do that. But w/o a home hotel (most will have to probably do Westgate which is terribad since it is next door to the Convention Center).. it will mean some cab fares for quite a bunch of people.

Parking makes sense for those who drive in which is not many for EVO unless you live in Nor Cal or So Cal.

Yes, 5 times at least in the middle of summer for Evo the past 5 years. Obviously I'm not serious about walking all the way there if it's too hot, which is not always the case anyway.

I don't understand how finals venue is practically a deal breaker. There's a couple combinations here you can work with to make life easier for ya....
Get 1 room for Fri/Sat if you're competing, different room closer to Mandalay for Saturday. Share cabs/uber/lyft, etc. with other attendees to reduce cost. There's also Vegas strip bus options.

Whatever, Westgate was cheap and served its purpose well last time.

hotel rooms won't sell out in one night, don't worry. if you want to be close to LVCC for friday/saturday book at the Westgate and buy a monorail ticket to get to the Strip. sounds like they will have transportation to Mandalay Bay for Sunday (most likely at the end of the monorail line).

Last EVO didn't they say that it was going to be the big farewell to Street Fighter 4? It definitely felt like one as everyone was pushing themselves to the hardest.

Makes sense that Street Fighter 5 is now.

Yep.

I'm actually shocked that people are surprised that UCSF4 isn't here. They told us last year. It's not like they'd say "nahhhhhhhhhh, we're just joshing guys it's back again!!!" or anything.

If USFIV fans want to do something about it, do what the Melee community did--loyally support your game for years even when you're not getting fight money or PR shine.

Create your own tournaments.

That's really your only option honestly.

Nintendo tolerates Melee because the fanbase is so dedicated and rabid. Capcom would probably do the same if USFIV had such cachet.

We'll see.

EVO is great, but it should not be the basis for your community. If the community is interested and strong enough, the game will continue to live on.

EVO was born from and started as a SF tournament. It's roots are in Capcom. Capcom folks did create this for it's own scene.

I'll enter a IV side tourney. Hope it comes back next year after Pokken flops ;)
