Expecting Nintendo to *mention* their next-gen console is in development at E3 ?

Wii is 2.5 years old now. Nintendo always mentions that their next console is in development, years before it comes out.

*In 1988, Nintendo shows the Super Famicom prototype off to the press in Japan, 2+ years before its release in Japan and 3 before SNES is release in the U.S.

*In the middle of SNES's life, August 1993, Nintendo announces Project Reality (which would become Nintendo 64) with Silicon Graphics as Nintendo's partner.

*At E3 1999, Project Dolphin (GameCube) is announced with partners IBM & ArtX.

*At E3 2004, 2.5 years into GameCube's life, the development of Revolution (Wii) is announced.

Shouldn't Nintendo mention that the next-generation of Wii (or whatever its next console is) is at least development, perhaps even revealing a codename ? That is, even if Wii HD, Wii 2, Super Wii, or whatever their next console is, doesn't arrive until late 2011, which is really the earliest possible timeframe to expect it.

Goddamn, I'll be so happy when the conferences are over so we can stop having a whole thread for every useless speculation tidbit.

I think they'll at the very least be asked about it. If it IS in development we'll probably see R&D pick up on the fin reports too (unless its done that already, I havent really been following them)

Announcing now could have a negative effect on Wii development though (unless they promised it would be cheap and 100% backwards compat) so I don't expect them to confirm anything. I think they'll watch throughout the year to see if any of Sony or Microsoft's E3 surprises start to effect their momentum. They'll want to strike a fine balance between milking Wii for all its worth and getting a new machine out before everyone gets bored or fed up of the tech. imo anyway.

but they have already mentioned it in past conferences and we all know they are hard at work on it. They are not stupid but I don't see them showing anything until Next Year

showing Wii HD would kill sales fast

Too soon for WiiHD
The surface of the Wii's potential has only been scraped lightly by games like Mario Galaxy, No More Heroes and Mad World

announcing there next console when publishers/developers are finally putting some of best teams/games on the plattform would be stupid...

Someone will ask, and they will say, as they always do, of course we're always working on something.

Here's my question to ask back. You're not happy with Wii now (a not-at-all indefensible position, considering the lack of support from Nintendo—and by lack of support I don't mean "no new Mario or Zelda", but rather just games to play, period.) But anyway: what makes you think Wii HD would be any different?

I wish they wouldn't even bring it up until it's release date was no more than 18 months away. I absolutely hate anticipating something for 2+ years.

by lack of support you mean games like punch out and excitebots ?

Developers have barely started using the hardware in the Wii, NOPE, they are not ready for anything better yet.

The Wii sucks and I do want a new console sooner even if it's just an announcement. Won't happen at all though.

camineet do you want to be disappointed?

Not this Nintendo, that would confuse the public they are targeting now. I'm pretty sure Nintendo is not in hurry to move to other generation (and they are traditionally quite slow to do it when they are doing fine).

No. There hasn't even been a price cut yet.

Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus will be front and center. DSi will likely also eat a bunch of time.

This generation is going really slow for me. I still feel like these consoles came out fairly recently so I don't want any announcements for a few years still. Usually I'm excited for new consoles but I'm nowhere near ready for new ones.

I would be surprised (current leader talks about a successor first? :o), but not dismayed (it clearly has the worst IQ of the 4 platforms displayed on my HDTV) by such a mention.

So, I dunno?

Seriously.I still don't even have an HD console yet. I don't want any new console announcements until next year at the earliest, a nd even that is pushing it.

When Excitebots came out, it was like heaven opened up and millions of angels started a glorious chorus—and it was, of course, in part, because it was a truly awesome game—but it was also because there had been fuck all else for so long with the red logo on the front.

I'm sure they're prototyping stuff as always, I think it'll be 3-4 years before we hear of the Wii's successor officially.

It's been in development for probably 3 years now. You think the hardware guys just sit around doing nothing?

Exactly. I never get why it's such a huge story when Iwata hints that a new console is in the works. It's probably been in the works since before the Wii was released. I wouldn't be surprised if this gen lasts longer than the last. They're not ready to call it quits on the DS and that's been out way longer.

Nintendo's strategy of emulating Apple has been working well for them, so I expect them to continue in this vein and not announce the next version of the Wii until just before it's going to release.

i thought each of the big three have all gone on record saying that they intend this generation to last longer than previous ones. if that's the case you can probably expect any announcements of upcoming consoles to be pushed back too.

If Nintendo mentions absolutely NOTHING about the next-gen console, I won't be disappointed. I don't really care. It's just that Nintendo always mentions their next console a few years after the current one is out. Nintendo has done this consistantly, every gen.

off-topic: What i WANT is, more and better games/software for the current Wii. Aside from the obvious next Mario, Zelda, Metroid, StarFox, F-Zero, Pilotwings, Kid Icarus, Pokemon, Pikmin, etc etc. I want games that Nintendo fans would never even think of (and some they would) Ace Combat Wii, Herzog Zweii, Military Madness 3 (in addtion to the MM coming to WiiWare), Daytona USA 3, Phantasy Star V, Ridge Racer Wii, Tokyo Wars, Alpine Racer, AfterBurner, Thunder Blade, Golden Axe Revenge of Death Adder.

I wanna see Wii Virtual Arcade with hundreds of never-released arcade games.

I wanna see every 3D polygon Namco & Sega arcade game that Wii can handle without downgrades, on the platform, either retail release or via DD.

Since Wii is never gonna have HD resolution or modern high-end visuals, the platform should be flooded with quality software that it IS capable of. Great games that make hardcore gamers flock to the system.

nah.. forget about Nintendo competing on the HD front with Sony and Microsoft.
why the hell would they? to please zelda HD wanting little old me?.. no.

All I want is a Wii HD - not to necessarily compete graphically with the PS360 but merely to output existing Wii graphics in HD native resolutions. I've seen the emulator thread and there's some great-looking games on Wii but they look shit over 28 inches.
