Facebook has acquired Oculus VR for 2 Billion US Dollars

Yeah it is a doomsday scenario if this device is tied to a fucking locked in app store.

Sadly it is. Palmer said there is no current plans for something like this which gives me hope but if later its something forced than I probably wont even bother with the device. :/

For now I can just hope nothing like that happens. Surely with how much Palmer loves indies he will let us do what we want free of Facebook.

Wait, why can't porn be supported by a VR headset anymore?
People are jumping the gun and thinking everything will be going through facebook which so far Palmer claims it wont.. But if it did Porn would not be supported clearly.

Don't know his reason, but in my opinion I am not supporting them because they allow garbage like Farmville to exist, which is designed to spread like a virus through their platform. They also haven't contributed anything remotely GOOD to gaming (IMO). Your question is very weird too because it can be asked regarding any company. Like imagine Comcast bought Oculus. Your question would apply, but its a huge fucking IF.

because comcast are opponents of net neutrality and price gouge their customers. i cant say the same for facebook unless someone knows otherwise.

so your reason for hating facebook is because of zynga?

why not hate chrome because chrome is a gateway to facebook which is a gateway to zynga games. or your phone for that matter.

i hate zynga too, theyre exploitive developers that taint the medium and prey on children. but i dont have a problem with facebook.

I hate the idea of oculus being a platform with its own store front.

i bet they would run a oculus store with or without facebook but i dont think you NEED to buy them there. It will be just a other source to buy a game (greenmangaming like but in VR), there will be no problems to buy the game on steam too at the end.

What an overreaction. This is infinitely better than Sony/MS/Nintendo buying it. This way Occulus gets a lot more capitol to work with and not be exclusive to one game console. It's hilarious that people are turning to Morpheus to "save" VR gaming when in fact there is nothing to suggest it will be as open as OR.

Anyone got that South Park "it's gone" image captioned with the oculus stuff?

Seen it earlier but can't find it, it's a 100 page thread now =/

Heard the news yesterday as it broke, and I've been quietly reading everything I can about it.

I think it will be a good thing. I spoke briefly with Palmer on facebook(wow), and I really am confident that this will only be a good thing for us enthusiasts.

The subreddit has been absolutely abysmal, though. I cannot believe all of the people that are claiming to have canceled their preorders.

I cannot fucking WAIT to get my DK2. I ordered 2 of them to have one to tinker with.

Hype still very much alive for me.

Me too. Today was a good day. I've been eagerly anticipating the consumer Rift ever since I first used the DK1. I believe that we will get a higher quality Rift in a shorter time frame now that Oculus has been acquired by Facebook. I also think that we will see a wider range of high quality VR content.

What? How could anybody say that Microsoft has had nothing to do with gaming pre-2001?

You ARE talking about the company that had and still has the only viable platform for PC gaming, yeah?
I meant in terms of an actual console and producing hardware, but maybe I didn't think that comparison though

Any bets on how soon the downgrade will be announced? Facebook will not sell a piece of hardware for $300. I expect a 720p version for around $100. If we're lucky, there will also be the higher priced version.

And it won't take them long to start pouring their disgusting social media sauce over everything. Every time you play an Oculus game you get logged into Facebook, <and with the stylish Facebook overlay you can share content with your friends while having the time of your life in Facebook VR™>

The Oculus is dead to me. Most everybody who buys into a new Devkit at this point will hate themselves 2 years from now.

Wow Google buying Youtube for 1.1 was a steal looking back. I see ads every second it seems.

I hate FB but i'm still trying to figure how in the hell they could wall off VR even f they wanted to.

Yeah I saw this, and I don't believe it. Zuckerberg would not spend 2 billion dollars to make a Facebook VR headset that wouldn't sell. How the hell would you even market that? "Now you can check your news feed in VR!"... That would be extremely idiotic, so yes, I think people are panicking for nothing. And everyone upset now will be changing their tune when the CV1 drops a hell of a lot sooner than it would have otherwise.

I find it hard to believe FB would spend 2 billions dollars and not get heavily involve in it. If OR takes off I have no doubt they will slap Facebook logo all over it.

ill gladly buy a lightly used second hand dk2.

You've got to be joking. There is no way anyone could sell a VR headset with a resolution that low. Even 1080p is not optimal.

Where do you people come up with this stuff? This is a serious question.

I had always kind of expected the hardware to be a little on the funky side but now they've got some real manufacturing money I expect these goggles to be very well made.

You want this to fail so bad, don't you? It's so pathetic to see some of you frothing at the mouth so hard that you're willing to kill off an amazing piece of technology just to stick it to Facebook.

Oh my god... where do I even start.

I thought Sony or MS would buy it. I guess I was wrong.

They were in talks with Sony for collaboration I think, DemonNite hinted at something around the Morpheus reveal, but Oculus weren't really interested. Now we know why: $$

Sony wouldn't be able to afford them anyway and they can do well with Morpheus I'm sure. I'm mildly surprised MS didn't buy them, they could've used them to boost their One offering, but 2 Billions would've been overkill for the Xbox Division too I guess.

I was thinking the same. It would have been a good opportunity for either of them to try out a new gimmick like VR. I even thought Google would buy them, but FB was just out of nowhere.

Since Facebook doesn't have any existing hardware, Oculus can continue to do their own thing. Had Sony or Microsoft bought it, the tech would have been stripped out and forced to work on closed platforms. It really is one if the best things for Oculus since Facebook will be more focused on getting experiences onto the device while Oculus innovates with it.

What is "The Oculus"? It sounds like it has always been off your radar since you don't even know what it's called.

I cannot wait to get my DK2, and I predict these emotional preorder cancellations are going to sting in July when I am posting new Rift videos.

I have nothing but disdain for Facebook and all it has done to our society, but I will wait and see where they go with OR and slowly but surely their end-game will be revealed.

I will say this though, no one drops 2 billion to acquire something without planning to get heavily involved.

Well Facebook spent $1 billion on Instagram and haven't touched it. Instagram is still their own thing really
