Why would I want to play "Shitty-Five-Hour-Shit-RPG-that-doesn't-have-Wario-yet-has-some-shitty-clone-thing-instead"?
Troll more.

5 hours my ass, and to call the gameplay shallow is absurd. It has more depth than some RPGs that have come out in the past 5 years. Having to time attacks, initiating the first strike prior to the battle even starting, how are these things shallow? Shallow is random encounters where attacking requires no more than choosing a move off a menu, aspects of RPGs we still see today.

I would hardly call that 'depth'. Mario, Peach and Geno. Give them their best attacks and ignore everyone else, and you have pretty much the team to beat any and all bosses in the game, and even then you don't really need many strategies.

Peachie heals, Geno hits everything, Mario makes sure everyone has enough FP to kill bosses quicker and also get a hit or two in.

I'd hardly call 'pressing buttons while canned animations cycle' with the term you classify as 'depth'.

Remember this?

Yeah, Dragona! SMRPG is a seven hour game.

Also, SMRPG had the Lazy Shells. Honestly, the only thing Paper Mario TTYD had that broke the game as much as Lazy Shells did was those badges that made your power increase if your HP were five or lower, which people managed to stack, letting them basically 1HKO the boss of the Pit of 100 Trials. But the thing of that is, it was unintentional in all likelihood.

I used to like SMRPG until people kept insisting that it was better than Paper Mario. I mean, I like SMRPG, just like I like KH, but it is SOOO overrated. It is praised for something it's never done, and I can't stand people hating on PM for not being FF with a Mario theme.

Lovely game! :)
My first "favorite RPG".. :)
Till Final Fantasy VIII, then that was topped by Chrono Cross..and as of right now (2008) Chrono Cross still #1..

As far as"the Mario RPGs", I prefer the Paper Mario series, but Super Mario RPG still holds a special place..really great game. :)

So this has suddenly turned into a hate fest. I was surprised it didn't in the first day this was posted.

Screw the haters. Best game on the SNES.

Now, if we were REALLY going to look at overrated SNES games, the game on the top of that list would be your namesake.

(Yes, I'm hurt and lashing out.)

My name's not based on a game, there's not even a game for the SNES with the word Snitch IN it

Crazy

I thought Mallow fit pretty well within the Mario Universe - no?

One of the few characters Square included that actually fit into Mario.

I mean, how many enemies do we see that actually fit in? Smithy was a lame boss. I'd rather Exor have been the final boss - Hell, the secret boss would've been actually cool. Smithy's really just in between feeling like a good Mario character, and a character who feels out of Mario. He's pretty lame, and tries to feel like Mario, but ultimately fails.

IS did a much better job of creating new characters, enemies, and species without forgetting the old. Because Bowser wasn't the villain, we saw very, very little of his troops. Why? Why did we get a million starfish things, but only two Goombas? Why did Goombas only fight you before you realize Bowser isn't the true villain, and the ones in his castle?

And just another note, SMRPG suffers from what KH suffers from - it tries to place new enemies over old.

Is that not the damn point? Characters from outside Mario's element/safety zone tyring to take over his world?

Um, no?

A Mario RPG should be a "Mario RPG". Not an RPG with Mario and a bunch of random, generic FF monsters.

Mario RPG means "Mario in an RPG". It should essentially be Super Mario Bros. in RPG form, although not that simplistic.

If the game were Mushroom Kingdom Hearts, then yes, that's what it would be. But it's a Mario game, and it should be about Mario and the other characters that exist in his universe. It's a Mario game with more plot.

Kinda dissapointing seeing 2 games I really like (Super Mario RPG and Kingdom Hearts) being bashed in the same thread..(even worst considering that Kingdom Hearts has nothing to do with Super Mario RPG) "Oh, but Square-Enix.." Fudge you.. :p

This a Super Mario RPG appreciation/group play thread, and the title of this thread was just a joke based on the "Real GAFfers play Earthbound" thread..then the trolls, then having 2 mods trolling an appreciation thread of a game (and then people agreeing with them), then no wonder why so many threads are quickly derailed between the first 3 posts...

"Oh but Mario RPG sucks" ..."But Square drama sucks"... "But no deepness"
