Ferguson: Police Kill 18yo Black Male; Fire Gas/Rubber Bullets Into Protesting Crowds

The annoying thing about white anarchists, the RCP, etc. is that they don't seem to realize that their genuinely good intentions ought not to let them position themselves as leaders in this movement. They are putting their ideology before solidarity; their correct place is either to stay and agitate in their own communities or to offer themselves as bodies for the Ferguson community and let the local organizers there tell them what to do.

Good example of a failure of vanguardism.

They literally set up a free speech area. I understand wanting light and shit but so far away from the area they want to protest in is weird.

It's an improvement at least. Rather would have them protesting peacefully in a specific area than getting LRADs and tear gassed over and over while the media are forced out.

The group is small enough that they can rush in and grab any troublemakers, so I think it's the right choice to give them a spot and let them stay. Beats chasing them all off.

In what I'm sure is a terrible comparison but just to illustrate the point - for public safety, "fire" in a movie theater is why the press zones are legal.

Can someone recap the last 30 minutes? I had to go to the store real quick seems like something happened?

Tense, some water bottles thrown, but by some miracle the police didn't escalate beyond arresting ~10 individuals, at least one protester maced, no teargas.

watch

Basically some water bottles were thrown and a few people were arrested but most of the locals have left at this point.

I have this tiny, tiny thing in my head where I hesitate to paint them as opportunists.
Not saying that kind of thing isnt happening, clearly it is. Some people from San Diego? Please. (I live there) But I also do not want to discount people who have literally the same desire for justice because of things that have happened to/near them in their community, and are coming here because this is where they feel they can be heard. Lord knows we all know wanting to be heard is a very real desire, he said, posting to the internet forum of strangers.
I get you on this, but if these people are being asked to leave by protesters, or probably isn't too far fetched to think they may have their priorities different

Edit- I believe that spreading the facts and showing people the difference between looters and protesters is very important and my respect goes to the people ding this, whether on tv or on the net.

It's very important

For sure. And from what I'm seeing as well, what I illustrated sounds like it's in the minority of those out of towners. :(

I wanted to applaud the Peacekeepers in particular because they worked their asses off tonight.

And presumably because it's not their job to keep peace.

I can't really congratulate any police for not pointing their weapons in people's faces or for not being dicks when it's what they're supposed to be doing in the first place. They're (supposed to be) making up for Wilson's actions during these protests and even if they handled these situations as well as is possible, it wouldn't make these square.

I wish that were so, but the goal of the police is to force their authority down your throat. When we had the occupy protests here, cops were making people in the face while they were sitting down in a public park. Videos of it on YouTube.

Police want you to obey their authority, and I have no illusion that they feel responsible for instigating this behavior

Edit- a not trying to paint all police add villains but I'm speaking from mine and my friends and former coworker's experiences

Yeah, it's kinda like.. hey, you did your job the way you're supposed to... do we give medals for that or something?

Another press conference. Seems like they're going to do the same thing they did last night - show the weapons/tools/items they've collected so as to (try to) justify the actions they took.

An hour ago, Jessica Care Moore Talib Kweli, folks from the Fellowship of Reconcillation, Philp Agnew of Dream Defenders, Bgyrl ForLife
Malik from Occupy the Hood and Trymaine Lee from MSNBC and many others were chased like animals by the cops. We ran to get away and were
surrounded on a small path on bridge, surrounded by all types of police and told to lie down and put our hands up. We complied and we were
told if we did not stop moving we would be shot. We were breathing. The young brother lying on my feet as I was holding him was not able to
control his breathing he said "I'm choking" the cop told him to stop or he would shoot him. I told him "try not to move, just lay still I
got you." The gun was at his chest. I looked at the cop and said "please, he is not doing anything" I tried to record but the cop had his
finger on the trigger. I could feel Talib's hand on my back and Jessica behind me. We laid there until one Black officer said "Let them go,
we got who we wanted." In all my life I have never been so terrified. The young brother Devin said thank you I think you saved my life.
What is going down here in #ferguson in all my years of activism, organizing, I have never seen. This is a war zone, a military occupation
and our children are the cannon fodder. The white boy who threw the water bottle a big fuck you, I am sure you were an agent provocateur.
But for the police to act this way, they are itching to kill more of us. P.S. Women are also brutalized and terrorized by the police, at the
end all of us are Black and Brown and animals to them. We don't know where @PhilofDreams_ is and Ryan from Peace Poets was arrested.
@rosaclemente

Public officials praying before a press conference kind of bothers me a lot. Especially when they specifically invoke Jesus's name.

So the police can pray, but not the protestors?

Capt. Johnson seems a lot more calm tonight.

Well we all know god IS on their side. The bad guys being allowed to pray is almost blasphemy.

thank god no one on my facebook has said shit about it(except in support of the protesters). but on their pages I see people making appeals for the police families and remembering god and rule of law and all that bullshit. Ultimately comes down to us vs them crap and they're not even in the game.

They had urine thrown at them, glass bottles, and plastic bottles with water and ice.

Just said officer safety is their number one priority again. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that officers don't have the right to safety, but protecting the citizens should be the top priority.

Was having a talk on my FB page. And I put this. Then I though of GAF. So here.

MB reaches over, steals cigar box. Passes it off. Dorian gets scared. MB plays it off. Him and ack exchange words. MB then snatches another box. words. MB puts box on counter. Dorian puts his box on counter. Words. MB picks up cigars that fall, then attempts to leave. Ack follows him with hand extended, as if. give back my stuff.

Still no excuse for the officers actions. If my opinion turns out to be fact.

The police nearly shot a boy because he was choking? That's awful... nobody should have to go through that.

What do the cops hope to achieve by terrorizing civilians? More violence? Even less support from the community? It doesn't make sense to me at all.

Part of me thinks that the strategy is to beat people repeatedly for a week until they're so emotionally and physically exhausted they give up trying to confront injustice directly. It'd certainly explain the lack of information and the continuous beating of people repeatedly for a weak in order to emotionally and physically exhaust them.

@rosaclemente

After seeing the press conference, I had a sigh of relief that it was a better day even though things could of been improved drastically. Then i saw this story and it pissed me off.

I might just take a break from watching these events. I just can't take it anymore.

"In Jesus's name amen.. now turn on the LRAD and shoot the tear gas on those fuckers, it's what Jesus would do".

It's no mistake. They know their supporters are good God fearing Americans. So it means a lot to them to see that they're still humble to the Lord and take time out for prayer. Sends a big message.

of complete and utter bullcrap, but still. *shrug*

they aren't citizen stomping slugs who just follow orders, not giving a damn about civil rights or even common respect. They're good men and women who fight on the front lines to keep America safe from violent thugs. The same violent thugs who are coming for you..

In other words: 'abuse them into submission'... when put like that, it certainly sounds pretty grim.

make them march around in circles all day, while screaming at them with loudspeakers and pointing guns at them, then tear gas them at night, and shoot them with rubber bullets while shining the spotlights on them and still with the sirens and the loudspeakers. continuous marching optional? sounds about right... for the Nazis.
