This attitude he seems to have makes him come across as a massive wanker

I'm not saying he is, but this shit is completely unprofessional

Smug, egotistical and self entitled

:vomit
I wouldn't play Fez even if you were to pay me
If there was an internet 'ignore' list, he'd be right on there

Didn't realize this bozo was digging in deeper and deeper. He displays such a lack of maturity and intelligence that I question how he could possibly produce a great game.

Quite.

What are you getting so fed up about? Because he told you to suck his dick?
Me personally? No. That was my first post in this thread.

See unlike you I read the past few pages before jumping in with over generalizations.

Why didn't you just say "no"?
I did. He didn't tell me to suck his dick again.

I am highly surprised you made it through the junior phase, however I guess every so often one slips through the cracks.

Amazing how one guy's opinion about recent games from japan creates a HUGE FUCKING SHITSTORM in the entire internet.

Leave him his opinion, god.

Also grow up and learn to not give a fuck about opinions you don't agree with.
It's about not tolerating certain types of behaviour within a community.

In any community, people need to get put in their place when they act out of line. This is no different.

All I say is that people are horribly, HORRIBLY overreacting. I don't mean people on GAF. I mean people in general.
Overreacting because someone said that Japanese games suck nowadays.

But oh well, I will keep out of this thread from now on.
People keep saying this but that is really not the case. People are upset because someone who first praised the film and the games showcased in it was told that everything his country produces now is dog shit in return for his compliments. That's rude, unprofessional, and absolutely uncalled for. It's the entitled behavior of someone who is like just expressing his opinions maaaan, why you got to hate an artist for just expressing himself.

We think that makes him an asshole. We are calling him an asshole. Other people then show up to say, "Well, he's sort of right, so that makes it okay," and then the thread gets sidetracked into being about whether or not Japanese games actually do all suck (they don't), but the main point remains: Phil Fish is kind of an asshole and some people on GAF also think that's a good reason not to give him their money. That's like just our opinion, man.

Some of you guys are making me seriously questioning my faith in humanity and common sense.

Let's recap what happened:

Fez Guy says "I think modern Japanese games from Japan suck, because I think so. Old games are cool though".

[MISSING REEL SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE]

People scream "OOOOH YOU BAKKA GAIJIN HAVE BROUGHT SHAME UPON MY GLORIOUS JAPANESE GAMES FROM JAPANESE JAPAN WHICH ARE JAPANESE! KUZOOO! YOU HAVE TO DIE DESU KA!"

Tell me guys, what did Fez Guy do wrong?

Also a friend told me to quote this:
"If he actually gave examples of why I could maybe understand where he is coming from but generalizing like that just makes me think he's just looking to stir up some trouble." and respond with "Except he did".

'So here goes:

Except he did.
EDIT: Also he's not generalizing anything. He gave his opinion. You don't have to share his opninion. Yet you feel attacked. Like someone stabbed your puppy and pissed on him. Except nobody did. YOU are the puppy. And then you was puppy.
He was a bully who publicly embarrassed a polite foreigner in a room full of his compatriots, peers, and press. I don't even care about which games are 'better' (Better? i thought games were "art?" Isn't that the drum we beat? GDC? Anyone?), it's about the audacity of some punk bitch being so caught up in his own glory that he felt superior enough to slap a man in the face in public - a public consisting of his peers and colleagues.

If you can't see what's wrong with that, then well… eh. EH, I say.

I have a feeling you like to drive by post in threads without reading the discussion. A lot of people have expressed well thought out complaints to what he said. (mostly how he said it, the hubris of it, and lack of remorse of even a real apology)

And then we have you come in here with your dramatic ""OOOOH YOU BAKKA GAIJIN" post and tell us about overreacting. Funny.

Also like another poster said, he can have his opinion yes, and we can have one as well.

Yikes, you're awfully pissy about what people seem to think of him. Whatever happened to "it's okay for people to have opinions"? :\

Assuming he continues like this, he's in for a rude awakening when the day comes and he finds that no one wants to work with him or talk about him anymore.

He's buddy-buddy with the IGF heads, and given their lack of professionalism when responding to the complaints about judges not even playing the games they are assigned, I wouldn't expect much from them.

Trying to be devils advocate here, not supporting the guy. But isn't what he saying the opposite of Yoge kusoge (butchered probably) which translates as western games are shit games? And hasn't that been the general feeling of Japan for some time, though may not be the case today.

Hollywood was perfectly cool with Polanski drugging and raping a child and continues to defend him. Just saying not always black and grey.

You can't take the ramblings of anonymous forumites in Japan and compare them to what this guy did.

Besides, certain western games do pretty well in Japan, so it's not like the whole country hates them.

Like, say, if von Trier made remarks at a Cannes press conference that could be misconstrued as antisemitic? He was labeled a persona non grata, not because what he said was inappropriate, but because it was potentially illegal in the country in which it was said. Journalists and academics said, "Sigh, that's Lars," and the film which he was there to promote, Melancholia, made any year-end list that mattered and is generally considered a masterpiece. He is also a known misogynist that will go on to work with the best actresses in the world because he's talented. That's how the real world works.

It's not really surprising that someone with roughly the same amount of tact as Fish wouldn't see any problem with how he said what he said.

Suit yourself, but that's like almost the main reason that I use to choose whether or not to buy games.
Speaking for myself, there are a lot of other games out there that I'd enjoy just as much, and I can buy those without handing my money to someone I feel is a complete douche.

There are ways to express your honest opinion without being an asshole.

Actions have consequences, and choosing to be a dick in a public arena can have negative repercussions in your professional life - especially when you're a small businessman who still hasn't released a product.

These are things this guy really needs to learn.

The funniest part to me about people making the comparisons to other famous people (Kanye, Brown, Sheen, etc) are that all of those celebs had a laundry list of accomplishments before they had public meltdowns

To find the proper equivalent you'd need to find a celeb who had this kind of behavior before actually accomplishing anything significant.

Okay, let's not go overboard here. Fish doesn't actually need to have his game not published because of this. He still made a legit game with other dudes, why would you get Microsoft on the case? Jesus.

I mean, sure, he could've played it cool and didn't, but his game has some merit on its own, surely. You can choose for yourself to not buy the game, but don't fuck up his business.

Saying "suck my dick" on Twitter shouldn't break your neck like that. He's a real human being after all. He's drowning in debt because of his passion. Do you want to see him land on the street?

I hope Microsoft ignores this.

Some of you dudes are taking Phil Fish way too seriously. He's the ultimate joke character/troll on twitter and if you had been reading his tweets before GDC, you'd know this. I'm not pretending to know Phil in real life, but as a twitter follower of his for a while now, I do know that he's very, very sarcastic.

The guy gets so much shit just for wanting to make a great game.

Talk about giving indie designers and even people named "Phil" a bad name. He needs to spend that energy making the game good, not trolling the internet.

Even warned a friend away from watching the Indie Game movie at SXSW because this guy is part of the subject matter.

which is why Phil Fish is smart. all y'all are doing is giving him free publicity. I've seen more Fez talk in the past few days than I've seen since it started development. Lump in the IGF award and the fact that everyone loves it (pre- and post- Japan comment)....I have a feeling mr. fish is gonna rake it in on this one.

I'm not sure how being a joke character / troll gives anyone the right to act like he did. The way he acts has absolutely nothing to do with trolling.

There's a place and a time for trolling and making jokes. Teating someone like that in front of a huge crowd is neither the right place nor the right time.

Yep, the people hoping great justice will be served at the games release will probably be very disappointed :p

Phil's words weren't misconstrued. Neither were von Trier's. Phil made a blanket statement for a variety of reasons he's prattled on about at length, which could be overlooked, but it was how he said it, and the environment in which he said it in. No matter what real world setting you deem people to be in, it was still an outrageously pretentious way to voice his thoughts. He's not adding to an industry with that attitude. If he sees something as a problem, why not offer a solution?

but haven't we been here a million times before?

people on gaf always predict imminent failure over things that nobody knows or cares about and they're usually (always?) wrong.
