Why do I have a feeling this is going to be like waiting for FFXII all over again? Apparently there are development issues with the game; are there any credible sources to confirm this other than the "keep waiting" chatter from S-E?
One article I read stated that S-E will not have anything until at least April of 2008 (FFXIII related).
It sure would be nice to have another FF playable by the end of the decade, considering I wasn't exactly pleased with the last one. Yeesh.
No, I expected it sometime in mid/late 2008 to be quite honest. But, this early in, with the game not even 15% complete, for S-E to say April of next year seems a bit too confident. It just doesn't add up.

Yeah, I would expect perhaps, a new trailer at TGS and thats it...sadly this game wont hit for a while. But at least MGS4 will be there to ease the wait
It'd be here sooner if they didn't invest so much of their time developing spin-offs of previous installments.
Seriously, who else could've done without Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus?
If they took all of the talent working on all of those other FF related projects and instead made them focus solely on one from the start, we'd be playing it in Q2 2008 at the latest.

It is pretty disappointing when you think about it that way. I can't see why anyone would want that stuff if they knew they'd get the next single-player FF a lot faster, like it used to be.

I dont think they know anything...I dont think anybody knows anything but square. Anyway, new footage was shown recently, so they must have progressed somewhat....since last year...

I agree, except it doesn't have to be a FF title. Just churn out good single player RPGs, maybe even some new IPs. Screw the ports of old games and spinoff FF and DQs that are only slighly better than shovelware.
The 13%/ 1.3% completation rates are nothing more but jokes. Those rates were posted several month agos by Japanese magazines, and them (Famitsuat least, if I'm not wrong) predicted that the actual completation rates was about 30%. Considering that the game went in full production one year ago, and SE is predicting it to be released in a year, I guess it is about 50% complete.
Regarding the fact that SE has been showing very little, keep in mind that Kitase had already warned us of that not much time after the last year's E3. Although they were originally planning to start seriously hype FFXIII again in this E3, they decided to keep the stuff for the TGS instead. (Much probably because of the E3 resize, as SE obviously didn't care much about it.) Also, I believe SE said they only want to start hyping their most antecipated games next year, leaving 2007 for the spin-offs and such.
And about the delay of a playable demo, the team probably doesn't want to waste their time preparing it and prefer to keep concentrated on the main project. Many things, after all, should have been (and will be) changed during development, so it's better to only make a demo during the late development stages.
EDIT: The AC team is behind Versus XIII game, and while they were producting the movie, the KH's team were working on KH2, and the main FFXIII's team were busy developing FFXIII for the ps2. In no way did the creation of the spin-offs resulted in the delay of the main FFXIII. The only possible exception I can think of is FFXII:RW, as it is being directed by the same guy behind FFXIII's direction, but considering the game is a short project, I doubt it makes much - if any at all, difference.

True. I should have mentioned it was in their "rumor mill". Not that it would be surprising anyway. They would have showed something at E3 if it was anywhere close to half-done. I mean, if I was Sony, I would have forced them. It's much more of a potential killer app than anything else on the PS3.
I don't know what you mean by these tags, but I know that FFXII is the best political story in a J-RPG after Vagrant Story. (that I know of, and I know a lot)

Definitely going to agree with you on this. Anything Matsuno touches is pretty much gold, my only gripe is that things kind've fell apart at the end, in my opinion of course.
Well, a Final Fantasy is coming out this year. It's just that this time it's not Final it's Lost, and it's not actually a Fantasy, it's an Odyssey. But who could tell the difference ?

I meant that the story actually is neither "mature" nor "political intrigue". It's just the same old Final Fantasy story with magic stones. But this time there's no real characters with personalities besides Balthier.
There's other gameplay reasons why I don't like the game either, but I'd go on forever. Anyway what I'm trying to say here is that there's good reasons why people don't like the game. I'm not just trying to troll the series, I have a Final Fantasy avatar. I love the series.

They will reveal new FFXIII titles this TGS, a new FFXIII trailer that hopefully will be shown to the public this time (but I doubt it will be anything more but another expansion of the old trailers), and I theorise that late this year or early next year, we will start having monthly FFXIII news until the game is finally released (Imagining that it is released mid-2008, then about some 6-8 months of news? Actually, that doesn't even seems much, so I guess weekly news in 2008 as well)

FFXII's story suffers from many problems. Bad pace, concepts not enough developed (thus potential wasted), and a downhill in the narrative after the first 1/3 part of the game. Actually, all those problems are only present after the first 1/3 part of the game.
However, of all the faults, FFXII's story definitely is a bit more mature and political-driven than most of the FF stories. This is most notorious at the first hours, before the story goes downhill, and least notorious late-game, which is ONLY when the story starts becoming more like your typical FF story.
First, with the exception of Vaan and Penelo (which don't have a huge role in the plot, anyways), the cast consists of adults. Larsa can be an exception, but he is a very mature character. While recent FFs are filled with teen romance and teen angst, FFXII focus on the war and on the politics.
Most of the story revolves around taking back a stolen throne, and looking for politically-important fantasy objects to acchieve so.
Second, the characters are way less black-white, many of the important ones anyways. Giving some examples:
Ashe, desperate for everything that was happening, starts to take the easiest path to acchieve her objects, much like Vayne had done so, but thanks to her friends, she realised that revenge would only lead her to kill more innocent people and make her much unlike Vayne. Vayne, the "Sephiroth/ Seymour/ Kuja/ etc" of the game, was actually doing the best for his empire, as well as trying to free Ivalice from those he considers to be the true villains, the Occuria. Ironically, his acts only made him the threat of everything he swore to protect, and had to be killed for the best of the empire in the end. The Ocurria simply thought it was better for mankind's history to be controlled. The Judges all had their own agenda, and Gabranth, for example, was not another random evil moron nor very good guy that was being manipulated by a random evil moron neither, like what usually happens in the FF series.
I could go on, but this is very off-topic, so I will stop. But usually, in your average FF, there are two distinct sides - the good one and the evil one, and FFXII, much like your typical Matsuno's game, didn't feel like a good vs evil story but a conflict between people with different ideals.
It definitely IS more "mature" than most of the FFs, but that's not saying much, as the FF series are hardly the definition of maturity.
