FIFA 14 review thread

IGN - 9

FIFA 14 isn’t a major landmark for the series in terms of innovation. Unlike recent iterations, it doesn’t ask you to relearn key skills. But the changes have made FIFA more attacking, fun, welcoming, and attractive, and ultimately it’s a stronger experience.

You could argue that FIFA 14 shows EA Sports is running out of ideas, then, but for me this is a developer that knows exactly what it's doing. Neither the football match engine nor Ultimate Team were broken in any major way, and the placebo effect of a suite of control and balance tweaks, along with its increasingly snug ties to the drama of real-life football, will be enough to carry its ever-growing audience of players through the next season. As much as I know I will play it all year, though, I would like to feel a greater sense of progression next time. Hopefully EA Sports will find the next-generation consoles inspiring.

+ New shooting physics
+ Better pacing of matches
+ Overhauled UI
- Balancing issues

OXM - 9

FIFA 14 represents a difficult step forward for a very popular franchise, but a successful one nonetheless. The changes have such a significant effect, that returning fans may find them off-putting through the first five to ten games. But those that embrace them will be rewarded with perhaps the most satisfying, engaging FIFA yet.

These Career changes amount to a giant step forward for FIFA, as is the case elsewhere. Gameplay is the best it’s been on PS3, and presentation is improved, too, with Jeff Stelling’s pre-match, half-time and post-match links upping the broadcast feel yet again. Whatever your thoughts on annual sports games, you really mustn’t miss this one unless you want to spend the next nine months feeling like a defeated play-off finalist. If Arsene Wenger can finance Mezut Ozil, you can definitely afford this.

looks like embargo was moved forward a day according to VG
Please Note: Due to a change in embargo – it was brought forward 24 hours – our supplement articles for the review will be going live tomorrow.

So which one is it?

So what score would a major landmark get? 12/10?

You can give the game 9/10 without it being a major landmark, so long as the base game is solid.

If FIFA 15 were to be a major landmark, it could still get 9, 10 or even 8 while being a better game than FIFA 14.

Just bought PES 2014 so that's gonna be my football game for current-gen and I love it. And then I'll wait for FIFA 14 on PlayStation 4 at launch, gonna be a great year of football. :D

It doesn't need to be a major landmark for the series to be worth a 9/10. If the game is an improvement over the already excellent FIFA 13 then it deserves to continue to be scored highly, even if it's not some sort of huge revolutionary leap forward (which the series doesn't need at this point).

Is there any word on what upgrades the next-gen versions of all of EA's sports titles are going to bring? I'd like to start getting into FIFA and figure this would be the year to do it on a new console.

I wonder if it will be as successful as last year's version. Everyone just bought GTA5, some will need to save for next gen, and FIFA 13 was already amazing, on par with this version apparently (few parts of the game are better, most seem just different and just as good).

I think most people would have been fine with a roster update. This will be the main sales driver IMO.

Figures. I wonder how awful it would have to shit itself for it to get anything less than an 8 ffs. It's too big to fail, if you know what I mean. Still getting PES2014. FIFA just feels too arcadey now. The only reason I would have considered FIFA would be the licenses, but with the files people are working on, PES will have that AND better gameplay (imho), so the choice is easy.

Fifa will have the ignite engine, and 3d audience instead of the 2d it has always had. It makes a HUGE diffrence visually.

Im glad the reviews are good, since pro evo isnt coming out on the PS4 this year I have to get FIFA. Still cant understand why konami couldnt get off their arse's and get a port ready for launch

These scores are stupidly high.

I'm not suggesting FIFA 14 is a bad game - it's a good game. However, as a release, it hasn't really improved over FIFA 13. It does not warrant such high praise.

Reading the reviews of both fifa and PES as well as gamer reactions to PES means I will probably skip both again this year.

I don't think the scores should be lower than it got just because there are few major changes in the game play. I think comparisons to previous editions of a game, specifically a sports game, are silly. If it was already good, why change it too much. That shouldn't make it "bad" in the eyes of a reviewer.

That being said, I think the core game play in FIFA is pretty solid. We're going to see the first next gen version next year and I don't think there is much they need to change. I think they need to start adding more content. I loved FIFA Street but unfortunately no one plays it online anymore. Include a competitive 3v3 or 5v5 mode in the yearly edition of FIFA an I'd be impressed. Maybe a new engine as well.

I really wish some of these reviewers would have the balls (ARF!) to totally fuckin' slam the portable versions of this game. Just blanket 1/10s across the board. Would be epic.

Won't happen of course. Gotta keep that sugar daddy sweet :(

Sounds great. I hated the PES demo, but I think I'll wait for the PS4 version of Fifa unless Amazon offers an upgrade program for PS4 EA titles.
