Variations are dope though. Every MK character now has a Ken and Akuma to their Ryu (or Dr. Mario and Luigi to their Mario). If you were attached to a design, it sucks but I noticed missing characters (or the spirit of) as some variations to those there. A neat middle ground.

You swap out a couple of specials/strings per variation. Sometimes a new normal gets added for variations.

All characters have certain combo strings and special moves no matter what variation they are in.

A variation adds particular special moves and/or strings. If strings are added, sometimes particular button presses are redefined. (For example, hitting Back Punch would give you a normal-looking punch, but in a certain variation, you might swing a sword)
