What fighting games do you currently play, what is your all time favourite and why?
Not currently playing any fighting games as I've lent away my 360 and my PC graphics card is dying, but most recently I've been playing Soul Calibur V with my cousin because that's the only game he likes and can beat me in.
All time favourite is really difficult. It's either MvC2 or MvC3. I think I'd edge MvC2, simply because the first time I saw it being played I was just enamoured and had to stop and ask someone what the fuck am I watching and why is it so beautiful? I didn't even know MvC was a thing, and came out of that with a new love for fighting games and many of the IPs in that game.
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?All time favourite is really difficult. It's either MvC2 or MvC3. My favourite mechanic has to be the super. Not a new mechanic by any means, but supers are just so damn satisfying, both in games where they are easy to build up to, and games where you have to be more frugal with meter
. Building up to a very powerful, flashy attack to unleash is a very simple goal and dynamic to add to combat but an effective one.
My least favourite mechanic has to be combo breakers. I don't like the effect they have on match flow and how they only really exist to compensate for problems caused by other mechanics (such as long combos or hitstun), while also introducing new problems in the process.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?but not in SCV

I used to rent games for my Genesis because my parents thought why rent when you can buy, including SFII and UMK3. That sort of planted the seeds for later when I discovered MvC2, and even later for when the news dropped out of nowhere that SFIV was coming. All the nostalgia channeled itself into excitement for the revival of SF (and later, MvC), which then exposed me to the FGC. From there, it's history.
I play a ton of different genres of games, pretty much everything but sports games. Outside of the odd Strategy game like Civ and AoE, I tend to gravitate towards FPS and Racing games for the most part.
What is your favorite fighting game character and why?I play a ton of different genres of games, pretty much everything but sports games. Outside of the odd Strategy game like Civ and AoE, I tend to gravitate towards FPS and Racing games for the most part.
It would probably be Sakura from SF. It's hard to describe her appeal, because I tend to generally hate most characters with similar, young, japanese schoolgirl aesthetics (as well as the idea of clone characters). I like how she is the understudy to Ryu; pretty much all she wants to do is get better at fighting, and wants to embark on a journey just like his as well. I also like the little things like how her style is a quirky version of the style she looks up to, but doesn't really have all the discipline that Ryu does. And there's no real cliche sexual tension or anything. For the most part.
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
I would say my style of play is a mix of baiting and reactionary. The most satisfying thing to me is catching your opponent slipping or off-guard as it gives me a sort of intellectual high, so I keep doing that even though it's probably not the most reliable thing to revolve your entire game around. When my opponent feels they're in control, I usually just wait for them to fuck up instead and try to react.
Most of the time I play fighting games, I'm running long sets with a single friend or cousin or grinding in Marvel training mode.
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player? Most of the time I play fighting games, I'm running long sets with a single friend or cousin or grinding in Marvel training mode.
My biggest strength is probably my ability to anticipate what the opponent is about to do. I can usually see through people's game plans or how they want to approach me next even if I'm usually not able to counteract it properly.
My biggest weakness is execution. I drop everything, and even after hours and hours of practice, but more disappointingly I can't seem to break execution barriers that are important to overcome for all of the characters I am interested in playing (Iron Man, Sakura, etc.).
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career? My biggest weakness is execution. Best moment has to be attending Toryuken, my first IRL tournament. Really, there is nothing like the actual tournament atmosphere. You can be sitting at home and having fun watching all the tournament hijinks but nothing compares to talking to other cool people who you just met that share your hobby, someone you don't even know offering to help teach you Skullgirls, or getting hype over finals with a crowd.
Worst moment has to be going 0-2 at Toryuken. Kind of affirmed that I wouldn't be able to put enough time practicing/playing fighting games to compete competitively and work my way up to beloved FGC personality/commentator.
What do you want from future fighting games?Worst moment has to be going 0-2 at Toryuken. Kind of affirmed that I wouldn't be able to put enough time practicing/playing fighting games to compete competitively and work my way up to beloved FGC personality/commentator.
I want fighting games to learn from other genres, and FG publishers to begin taking the risks necessary to take the genre to the next level. This primarily means bigger budgets or a new megapublisher entering the game, but entails a lot of the more specific things that would be required, including: creating new IPs, extended developer support on-par with MOBAs and FPSs, in-depth tutorials that go much further than even the best examples today, designing modes and marketing games in a format that encourages people to try it out instead of back down from a genre stigma, etc.
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?
My good friend DryEyeRelief. If not, Horseress.
