Week of July 7th to the 13th, 2014.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

Last week's thread. An archive of previous FGW threads is available here.

EVO is upon us. All roads lead to this, the biggest stage and fighting game tournament in the world. Keep an eye eye out for the official thread, because when it goes up, that will be our home for the most exciting tournament of the year.

Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look at GAF's underage ninjagirl sexual predator, Passive Assassin!

What fighting games do you currently play, what are your all time favourites and why?
The only game I'm playing seriously right now is Ultra Street Fighter 4 since it's the game with the most competition in Sacramento. I dabble in KOF13, GGXXAC+R, BBCP, ST, 3s, CvS2, and TTT2 whenever someone wants to play it on the cab. My all time favorites are CvS2 and 3s. The music, characters, and system mechanics are amazing.
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?
My favorite mechanic is the parry mechanic from 3s. It looks cool and makes you feel like DAIGOD.

My least favorite mechanic is X factor since it feels like an overpowered get out of jail free card.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?
I never took fighting games seriously when I was a little kid and didn't know about the local arcades in Sacramento such as the Folsom Gameroom and Birdcage. But I did know about the games my brother brought home for the PS2, namely CvS2, GGXXAC, and Tekken 4. I only played those games when my friends dropped by and it was the typically mash to win and throws were cheap mentality. I was more of a Halo 2 player back during middle school to high school and liked the glitchy slide of the game, such as the BxB, BxR and sword canceling to get off the map.

Then one day after playing Halo 3, my friend decided to pop in Street Fighter 4. I got the hang of the basic game plan with Ryu and went to town on most of my friends until someone picked Akuma and I got bodied. I decided to pick up the game afterwards on PC and got a shitty Hori EX2 to start out with. I learned how to use a stick within three weeks and played within my group of friends for a year or two before finding out about GAF and the local scene.

I guess the time when I started to get more invested into fighting games was when I started playing with other Gaffers from the old AE2012 community thread and #gafranbats. I upgraded from my Hori EX2 to a Madcatz TE Round 2 in order to play better and have more control over my inputs. I learned a lot about my playstyle and how to change it up from being an total online scrub (well ... still an online scrub but I'm slowly progressing). Then I started going to a local tournament called Tap Ex tourneys ran by a guy I remember from high school and got introduced to other tournies in the area, such as CFD and the Davis fighting game scene. My first tournament was NCR this year in Sacramento and I'll be going to Evo this year too.

I used to play SC:BW back in elementary to middle school and then WoW from high school to my sophomore year of community college. Raided from Burning Crusade to the first few bosses in Ice Crown Citadel as a hunter on Dragonblight and Tichondrius Horde. Thank god I ended WoW during the beginning of ICC since the game started to die down around then. I play CS 1.6, CS:GO and Arma 3 on the side.
What is your favorite fighting game character and why?
Ibuki. She's a ninja with decent combos and she's a glass cannon, which fits my play style.
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
I play full rushdown with little to no defense. Then when I get the opponent dizzy, I just practice Ibuki loops or SJC combos on them. It usually ends up with me dropping a link and everything going to hell afterwards.

I usually play locally at a local boba spot that has a gutted out astro city cab with a ps3 fitted in. It's nice since there's new hori buttons (thanks carlo!) and the drinks are cheap there. Before I found out about this spot, I used to play AE2012 on PC. There was little to no lag playing people from the East Coast or Canada. Wish the same could be said for Ultra for PS3 though ...
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?
My biggest strength is execution and sometimes godlike reactions. I remember doing a reaction yoroitoshi against a local player who did ex dash straight and he thought it was an OS, and hashinshoing gouken's overhead from point blank range and many fireballs. :D

My biggest weakness is patience. I don't like sitting still in and waiting for the one knockdown. I'll try to play footsies but that usually doesn't work out. Another weakness is overextending myself by going for fancy combos like SJC ultra where I could just do a regular neckbreaker into knockdown for more setups. And dropped combos :l OMG itZ pAss.
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career?
Best moment was going 2-2 at NCR and pulling off Ibuki loops and SJC ultra on the people I played in losers.

Worst moment was when I played my first major tournament match on stream at NCR and got bodied free 2-0 against a Bay area Ken player. It was 10 am in the morning and I got the stream jitters. Other than that, the worst moments happen whenever I play online on PSN and lose to Mesmerman :l.
What do you want from future fighting games?
I want more ninjas and jazz hip hop in my fighting games.
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?

Make your predictions folks. Who you want to win and who you think will win.

This one is easily in the top 3 thread titles created for FGC Weekly.

That said, y'all need to be watching Kings of Cali 4. A Yoshi beat most of Melee's top tiers earlier played by Mew2King and just now dude looked like he was going to get eliminated by a sleeper.

Get Kitty into top 8.

And someone please save us from Aquaman.

My path to top 8 is relatively good. It's mostly matchups I'm comfortable in and I should avoid Theo, Cowboy and Max until the end. If I don't get upset I should have a clear path to top 16 winners.

I'll say either Justin or Champ will win Marvel. Maybe Chris. If Apologyman makes Top 8 though I think he has a pretty good chance of winning though.

Marvel: ChrisG or any of the EG guys takes it.

SF4: I predict Infiltration with an off the cuff character, most likely Elena. Next i pick one of the japanese players taking it, with probable winner being Yun.

KoF: JUICEBOX

The post in the previous thread may be the only time in existence I agree with Deckard.

Why on earth is BBCP subject to the earliest finals when it has more entrants and more prize money on the line?

The drama, salt, tears and anger over the cash prizes and Arc Revo ticket is hopefully not damned to an 8AM cursed Melty Blood time slot.

Chris G or Justin Winnin marvel. Chris G won't self sabotage this year hopefully now that he knows how to deal with pressure.

Idk who will take street fighter but probably some one East Asian will.

KoF I got Tokido.

BB imma say tsujikawa with the highest placing American being banana ken.

Smash imma say mango.

Killer instinct will be between Rico and Justin but I have faith in Rico

Prime time for Japan because it's going to be an all Japan Top 8

Didn't Microsoft provide a ton of free stuff after Evo swapped? It seems clear why that's the case, then. Look at the Sunday schedule:

Sunday is BBCP --> KI --> SMASH --> MARVEL --> USF4, with some surprises along the way!

BBCP - donated tons of money to the fans
KI - donated tons of money to Evo coordinators via products
SMASH - you don't fuck with Smash
Marvel - second most popular game
USFIV - newest game and most popular

There's a big divide between KI and Smash in numbers, so I think the only feasible swap is between BBCP and KI. Microsoft might be doing more for the event than BBCP. There are probably factors unknown to us. /shrug

Slayer of Combofiends
Dream Top 8 for Marvel (In no order):

1) Apologyman
2) Rayray
3) Yipes
4) Full Schedule
5) Clockwork
6) SomeBrownKid
7) FizzyKups
8) (Insert obligatory Zero player)

From this top 8, it is certainly the most diverse and threatening top 8 if I have ever seen one. Each of these guys, I don't know for FizzyKups and SomeBrownKid, have given F. Champ and ChrisG a run for there money.

However realistically speaking, this will be top 8 for sure:

1) ChrisG
2) F. Champ
3) Justin Wong
4) The DayWalker
5) Apologyman
6) Cloud805/Rayray
7) Flocker
8) Yipes

The first three are pretty much guaranteed due to how developed their playstyles are. Ed is a bit more of a gamble since he tends to lose to randoms, granted they get names for themselves later on with showing some consistency in tournaments.

Apologyman didn't make it last year but who knows, he might have that guarantee spot.

Yipes can easily make top 8 if he gives his Capcom Cup performance throughout the entirety of his pool.

Flocker might make it, his Zero does have some faults but they don't usually show up unless the matches are dragged out or someone knows not to press a button while airborne against his Zero.

USF4 - Snake Eyes/Smug
Top 8 would be crazy

Marvel - Chris G

KI - Rico

Melee - Amsa

It would be really entertaining if every game was won by a player from a non-dominante region or low tier characters. ex. usf4=usa/dan, mcv3=mexico/spiderman, etc. Not going to happen though.

ChrisG will win UMvC3
JWong will win Killer Instinct
Anakin will win TTT2
Mango will win Melee
Theo will win Injustice
Tokido will win KOF13
Galileo will win BBCP, Banana Ken will be the highest placing American

USF4 ehh...I have to think about this one. I think USF4 going to be pretty random this year

Really Yipes?

LESSSSSSS GOOOOO.

Better see some hype neogaf stream matches.

As one of my friends told my other one when he was on stream at ufgt for marvel 3 pools

"Make sure you throw those shields"

This applies to you too Smedwicks. Always be throwing those cap shields

Yeah, I don't really understand why BBCP and KI aren't switched around. BBCP has more people and has a bigger pot. Marvel, USF4, and Smash all had bigger attendance numbers and draw more viewers so it's understandable but BBCP should definitely be the lead in.

Slayer of Combofiends
Really Yipes?

IF he gives the same level of performance he did at Capcom Cup last year.

He made top 16 EVO last year and was one match away in losers to making to top 8. He took out Rayray and had to take out Paradigm to make it to top 8 but lost to Paradigm.

Once he loses convincingly to something, he downloads it immediately and breaks it down (like CJ's panic button footdives with his Dante tech). He probably has the match against a Haggar down for now since he lost last time. Although that might not be the case since Haggar's are a rarity on the East Coast.

I think it's the game that makes the most sense to lead with in terms of warming up the crowd.
