Fighting Games Weekly | May 12-18 | The Bracket Racket

Glad I never understood the appeal of alcohol.

I have a sneaking suspicion E3 is going to be insane this year - at least for MS. Blowing your load this early with Halo news and a price drop?

Maaaaaan.
E3 will be insane across the board. I predict the most radical E3 in the last decade.

Could be because BB chain combos have a timing aspect to them unlike chain combos in most games due to long start up times on some stuff.

Like when I go from BB to GG I drop combos because I'm not pressing stuff as fast as possible in chains and such because I'm doing the slower input style BB has

Feels like Azrael takes that to the next level, too.

The only stuff I'm ever hyped about from e3 is the Nintendo and Japanese dev news so I'm rarely hyped about E3 these days.

E3 was pretty great last year just because of how explosive Sony was.

I'm only really looking forward to Nintendo's conference at the moment. If Uncharted/stuff like Uncharted is the big stuff that Sony has to offer, then eh, and I'll see about Microsoft. Don't have the money or disposable income to get an Xbone so really, if I do bite on one, it won't be for a few years.

Yeah he does xD

I don't have the stats to back up what I'm about to claim but it's just what I think. I think when arcsys create balance patches they do it partly to keep current players interested in the game and to get people who may have dropped it to come back. In other words it's all about the yen, they don't really care about overall balance because they know that keeps the game interesting and gives them a reason to do more patches when ever money slows.
Yup

Honestly the only thing I got hyped about from the Sony presser was the ff15 trailer and kh3 announcement. I'm still looking forward to what Nintendo and Sony got this year. If Microsoft got Japanese devs making game for their console like with the 360 then I'll be hyped about that too.

Damn I wanted to celebrate the Kings beating the Ducks and go out tonight, but my friends ain't having it. Nah, they have to do stuff like work tomorrow or watch their kid or just be an adult in general. What horribly responsible people.

Looks like I'm staying in and playing games. Been playing Super Time Force for the past hour and it's cool, but I'm getting that fighting game itch.

But which fighting game should it be?

Hello. I am a fighting game fan. I am also a huge scrub. Scrubbin bubbles level scrub. But I like to play and hopefully get better. I own almost every fighting game on my inferior seXbox 360's market place aside from the following: Street Fighter X Tekken, Tekken 6, BlazBlue Calamity Trigger, and Soulcalibur 4. I have literally everything else. From the Mahvels to the Morrtal Kombats to P4A to King of Fighters to SONIC THE FIGHTERS. I have it all besides what I listed and that list is only temporary.

Anyway I play UMVC3 the most but I am always down to play one of my many titles. Like I said I play on my plebeian peasant Xbox 360 so if you too are inferior and want to beat up on a scrub like me, PM me for details. I don't rage quit, I don't talk trash, I don't catch feelins. I just like to play fighting games with people and hopefully learn from them. Hope to see some of you in the ring!
Welcome to the FGW.

Surprised to see that many people here don't drink alcohol.

I am not certain how E3 will turn out. It has potential to be hype but it could be a let down too. I feel like a lot of companies have something to prove/showcase for the next gen not just Microsoft and Sony so it will be exciting to see what the future holds.

I just figured most of fgc was under 21.

With allt his damn heat in socal, ive been craving a caipirinha or a mojito, but both take too much damn work to make at home. Moscow mule would be my go to drink though.

Yup and it's pretty annoying..

I think MS and Nintendo have a higher ceiling than Sony in terms of hype/interesting announcements. Nintendo might not bring the hype but I wouldn't be surprised if some very interesting things come out of them this year. MS is sneaking into the club with heat in its trench coat.

Sony will just be solid in comparison.

Can't say I'm excited for E3 at all. It should be good, I guess, considering we'll get the first look into what this gen can offer that isn't rushed launch titles, but for some reason I'm not.

Excited that Nintendo is potentially opening up their IPs to more competent developers (and probably more interestingly, different media), but I think its too early for announcements. Smash.. I don't think there are characters left that would shock me AND that I would also want in the game. I definitely think most eyes are on Nintendo.

Excited for Halo, obviously, but I'm not any more inclined to buy an X1 for the long run even if it seems to have all the more interesting titles ATM. ntkrnl promised Crackdown 3 as well, but.. in the back of my head is still the fact that MS killed my favourite franchise. MS is probably the runner up in terms of hype because even ntkrnl said he purposely didn't leak the even bigger announcements (which is probably more than just the Viewtiful Joe-esque Platinum title).

I don't know what to expect from Sony? What more could they possibly show? The only thing I'm looking forward to is an extended demo for Destiny, and whatever Media Molecule is working on. Maybe God of War if they decide to tackle different mythos.

More topically, I don't have much hope in terms of third parties or fighting games specifically from third parties (aside from EA's Star Wars game(s)). Capcom has downgraded all fighting game development to Megaman status and Namco has been holding out on TKxSF so long I don't give a fuck anymore. More curious about what NRS is working on, and if it's MK10, what the art for that game will look like and what they'll do to iterate on all the nifty features they put in Injustice. As much as I don't like the games they make, I think they are pretty forward-thinking in what they add to their games. I suppose if Tekken 7 is revealed and it is pretty radically different visually and maybe even mechanically, that would be cool.

Sony is probably bringing out The Last Guardian (BELIEVE!) and that Beast Souls game. If those two make it to the conference then it would be pretty big for them. And of course Uncharted 4.

I don't see how Capcom has downgraded fighting game production to Megaman levels. They are obviously in a transitional phase. It's like saying they have put most of their IPs into MM levels of productions because they haven't gotten a new game in them for over a year.

Honestly my excitement has been hampered down by those rumors/leaks whatever. Not that I believe them to be true or anything... but I already know that if E3 isn't close to those then I would be disappointed subconsciously. I wouldn't say it out right but in the back of my mind I would be thinking "the conferences were alright but nothing like those fake stuff".

Well, technically Megaman is in a transitional phase. Same deal: no major titles with a renewed focus on rereleasing existing properties because they don't see a place in the market for it right now, or want to open budgets for them.

I want another action game announcement... Bayonetta 2 isn't enough to sate my taste (and I don't plan on getting a Wii U). Also wouldn't mind a Capcom All-stars announcement...

You are comparing a game series that hasn't received a major title in 5+ years to game series that haven't gotten a major title in a little over a year.

Come on now.

Devil May Cry 5

I will ALWAYS BELIEVE!

Well I would say MM10 was the last major Megaman title. That was 2010. SFxTK was 2012. Not too far off, but still, they are both in the same predicament, even if one has been in it longer.

I think SFxT is not a "franchise" so it really shouldn't be included in the conversation of franchises that are in "transition" phase.

I guess you could say MVC is in that phase.. but again is it because Capcom is afraid that MVC4 will flop like MM or is it an issue with licensing? They didn't list it in the top 6 games of Capcom so I would say that series is definitely in that phase although for other reasons.

Well, I was comparing Capcom's disposition to the whole fighting game genre to Megaman. Can fund USF4 but are not really ready to greenlight DS4/SFV. If they don't think an SFV is necessary for another 4 years, I think that reflects how they look at the market right now.

Even shortly after MvC3 came out Seth said they probably wouldn't release another for a long time because they think the franchise needs breathing room (which I agree with). If they're not ready to invest in SF first, they sure as hell are not looking to make another MvC anytime soon. I wouldn't expect it to come in the top 6 franchises anyways. I don't look at it as a regular sort of franchise, just one they pull for when the stars align. Licensing is definitely a big part of that too, but I think even if Marvel was telling them to do one every 2-3 years they wouldn't.

Capcom has no control over Marvel vs Capcom, why would it ever be a major series for them.
Because it has more sales than 2 of the games they listed in that top 6? Because MVC3 was among Capcom's best selling games this generation?

And yeah I agree with you that MvC shouldn't be listed if there are licensing issues. If they have limited control over it then there is no point in listing it.

I'm sure Capcom would love Marvel vs Capcom far more than Lost Planet.
I mean despite their huge shipments, the last 2 Lost Planet games debuted at less than 50k.

But it's not up to them at all.

I am still surprised that Capcom considers Lost Planet a top 6 major franchise for them. They are REALLY trying to make that series into AAA status. I wish other Capcom games had pushes like that.

I think one thing Capcom has learned in recent years is that over-saturating anything that isn't an A tier brand will damage it in the long run. Bionic Commando, Lost Planet, hell, even diminishing returns on digital MvC titles. So now they've clenched up and think it's good to pick and choose their spots.

With the wealth of IPs Capcom has, I think this could be good for them. Count Capcom out and then BAM MOTHERFUCKERS YOU THOUGHT WE COULDNT MAKE ANOTHER STRIDER GAME DID YOU, OWWWWW. They did that with Ducktales too. Just rotate them all on longer cycles if they're not doing RE numbers. And when/if they are, then accelerate that cycle.

I think that's where they are with fighting games. They know their next splash has to be a big one and one that can carry momentum for the rest of the games they put out in the genre. Capcom is not as big of a publisher as we'd like to associate with the strength of their IPs either, so they may be hesitant to spend tens of millions on a Darkstalkers title before they do a SF title.. and they just so happen to think now is not the time for a major SF update.

I still think an MvC4 before SF5 could happen, but only if Disney puts money down on the table. I can't see Disney wanting to do another MvC4, or another Ultimate Alliance or anything of that matter. They want to create a good foundation for Marvel characters in original titles and stuff that ties into their other properties like Infinity according to new [MCU] interpretations of characters.

But yeah, I'm fucking lost on Lost Planet too. That is just insulting to most of their other IPs.

How were Bionic Commando and LP over saturated?

LP got 3 games in a generation that was 6 years long... that's about standard for a franchise.

Bionic Commando also got three games.

I feel like the only over saturation Capcom did was with fighters. Releasing SFxT, MVC3, UMVC3, Marvel Origins and a new version of SF4 very close to each other did them more harm than good.

Bionic Commando Rearmed did great critically and sales-wise. Bionic Commando was a bomb and Rearmed 2 did really poorly critically and IIRC sales-wise too.

Maybe oversaturated is not the right word, but there is a distinction in IP strength which dictates how often they can release very successful titles. Their blind faith in LP perhaps contradicts that, but I still think that longer cycles are probably the better way to go. Even a 2 year cycle is too little for something like LP.

Capcom could have done without the very close updates. I was annoyed with the SFXTK character DLC/gem scheme and with UMvC3 releasing so soon after vanilla. But I regardless enjoyed all of their fighters so eeeeh. I still don't mind that much that I bought both MvC3 and SFXTK at launch. Both stellar, enjoyable games that I put many fun hours into.

I'm not excited for much at E3 besides Smash and Zelda U. The stuff they're doing for Smash alone might make this the best E3 ever in my book.

As for non-Nintendo stuff, it doesn't look like Capcom will be showing much, if anything. Street Fighter V will totally be there... next year. Konami will have MGSV and nothing else. Beast Souls is probably my most hyped non-Nintendo game. Some more FFXV and KHIII would be neat, I guess. TLG too?

Biggest megaton would be a new Banjo Kazooie. That announcement sells me on an Xbone.

I feel like with Capcom we can potentially see the following:

*New AAA next gen game. Could be new IP or sequel to a franchise (like the rumored Dino Crisis 4)
*Resident Evil 7
*New fighting game. Not SFV or anything Marvel related but some type of fighting game announcement I feel is likely.
*And because I am mutha fucking biased as fuck... Devil May Cry 5.

My reasoning for DMC5:

*Itsuno claims to want to make a DMC5 on more than one occasion. He also wants to make DD2 but I doubt Capcom would have DD2 in the works with Deep Down coming. That's the type of canabalism they need to avoid.
Itsuno has to be working on a next gen game, he's like one of the few top developers still at work for Capcom.

*Capcom has generally stated that they have wanted to make DMC games in 2-3 year cycles. It's been a year since DmC so another DMC game would be due for an announcement soon if they keep on track.

*Capcom recently renewed the trademark for DMC.

*DMC listed as top 6 major franchise for Capcom. Even DmC sold a respectable 1.5 million despite huge backlash. DMC is not a AAA franchise but it gives Capcom dependable sales, definitely more stable than some of their other franchises.
