Fighting Games Weekly | Sept 2-8 | Pushing Society Forward

Welcome back to circa 2008 GAF. The past few years it only went into hibernation due to the extended console generation.

the war is fought on many fronts.

I know guys *sigh* it just sucks. You know it's bad when a honest thread about indie developers get turned into a pissing contest between Sony and Nintendo and the conversation just becomes about who's siphoning more indies onto their side.

Yeah this thread is super dumb. KI is not going to be the only 720P game next gen, most of these console warriors are in for a rude awakening.

It's like this every gen, I don't get why people expect otherwise. Devs are getting a bunch of shiny new tools to work with, there's no way they'll be able to resist showing off for the first few years or so.

Fighting-GAF,
Does anyone have recommendations for buying an Ethernet over powerline adapter?
I'm moving into my new apartment this week and won't be able to set up my PS3 in the same room as the cable Internet modem.
Wireless is ass for gaming, so I need a wired solution that I can use in my apartment.
I had been looking at these:
TrendNet 200Mbps set

DLink 200 Mbps set

TrendNet 500 Mbps set

Does anyone have experience with these specific models and brands, or have a specific model to recommend?
Will a 200Mbps adapter set be sufficient or will I need a higher speed?

I'm looking for something sub-$50.

Thanks in advance guys.

I did a bit of research regarding this and if you intend on playing fighting games, it's probably not the best option. It's a slight improvement over wifi but definitely not as good as a direct connection. Also, I read that the circuitry of the building can really effect the performance...to the point where its worse than wifi.

Wired is the best option obviously. But if that isn't possible, they perform a lot better than a wireless connection and your internet connection is still the major bottleneck.

The dlink brands worked very well for me in a previous house. The one I am in now doesn't make them a viable option because it has two different circuits separating where the router is and the TV. If that isn't a problem, go for it.

It's just super hilarious to me that we'll have to wait til next-next gen or possibly even later to get graphics on par with the Killzone 2 and x360 Madden "reveal" trailers from this gen. I guess it's sort of surprising that people think a Killer Instinct reboot of all things should be able to convince them to spend 500 dollars on new hardware.

console wars are stupid to me. I just don't get the reason why I have to diss one console for the other.

People naturally want to champion their (often forced) choice of one console in the hope that this will boost its popularity and ensure it has all the best games.
It didn't work then and it especially won't make any difference now with the strength of casual markets. But hey, I was the same back in the NES/Master system days so I can sympathise. All part of a gaming life.

As for killer instinct and next gen in general being 720p? I only have a 720p TV...so *shrug*

but my console has to wiiiin

My favorite variant is still "but that console has to suck".

I think saltybet might have peaked. I haven't seen it break 4k in a while.

At least it isn't hiccuping as much as it used to in exchange.

I was going to pull the allegiances for single console owners card, but I'm really wondering after last gen who was really so invested in one console for so long that they didn't try dipping their toes in the other's pool.

The KI thread is kinda hilarious to me in that it still shows people don't get that it isn't just a flip of a switch or changing sliders to magically make tradeoffs for different levels of performance/resolution. While I definitely think (and know) that there's going to be a whole lot of 720p/60fps (or even the dreaded 720p/30) between the MS and Sony console, I also feel like people are long jumping Mario style to one too many conclusions about the gen being only games with that level of performance based on year -1 stuff.

Hmm. Thanks Xcobalt, I'll have to try it out and see.
Hopefully I can return the adapter if I get shitty performance from it.

Thanks ToddHunter.
Is the Mbps speed of the adapter itself much of a limiting factor? Would I be ok with a 200 Mbps adapter or should I get 500 Mbps?

I think I'll try to get the adapter from somewhere local so that I can return it if it doesn't work due to how the apartment building is wired.

Maybe I can talk my wife into letting me run a long Ethernet cable through the apartment instead...
Probably not

I think the problem is that people still think it's sort of weird that fighters which are just 2 characters plus a non dynamic singular environment still don't look as good as big shooters or open world games. They aren't entirely wrong, I mean at one time fighters used to display cutting edge graphics or at least the models were some of the best around like Tekken 3 or the original Soul Calibur.

I guess it has become harder and harder to maintain 60FPS while upping the graphics. In the PS1/PS2 era a lot of games were 60FPS (like MGS2) but later on there were fewer and fewer 60FPS games.

The people who are worried about resolutions, AA, MSAA or whatever the fuck should be building $2000+ PC rigs not wasting their time looking at consoles.

This is too hype not to post from the UMvC3 OT:

DOES WHATEVER A SPIDER CAN

Guilty Gear Xrd is 1080p/60 FPS.
And it's probably a fraction of the budget Killer Instinct is.
They announced native res for GG Xrd on consoles? I thought they hadn't even announced it's coming to consoles yet lol

It's probably a bigger budget than KI too, since KI has a pretty short development time and a small team.

$1000 will get nearly all of these people what they need for years to come.

Console games have barely proven they can produce great image quality (with still plenty of room for improvement) at 720p30 and people are calling anything less than 1080p60 "pathetic." That KI thread is absolutely terrible. I gave up when there were far too many stupid comments for me to reply to at once. People setting standards for games on hardware they have no frames of reference for, and we are seeing the first generation of games for. The obsession with resolution is mind boggling.

The "build a PC better than a PS4 for 400 dollars!" things confuse me the most. It's all the work of PC gaming for almost none of the advantages, because for 400 dollars it's a better idea to just let Sony do all the work for you and be set for the next 7 years.

Won't Killer Instinct's development continue far after the initial release, to big the constant updates and whatnot?

why are people spending $150k to design and build a single fighting game character? that's too much!!!

Yeah people also don't seem to understand that even the Xbox (original) could've done 1080P and 60FPS if you made the game look like a PS1 game. Or the PS3 could also do 1080P and 60FPS but look like a PSP game (like Tekken 5). It's just a matter of how good the game looks graphically and then the performance comes. You can probably make a game that looks photo realistic or at least high end CG quality but it will probably be running at a low resolution and/or sub 10 FPS. Conversely you can make a game that is 1080P at 60FPS but it will hardly look better than a previous gen game.

People are getting too spoiled over games like Battlefield 4 and Shadowfall being 60FPS and 1080P. Those games have massive budgets and resources, not every game is going to be pushing that level of tech and I will bet my candy ass that neither game is able to hold a consistent 60FPS for too long or in the middle of intense action scenes.

Is the game fun?
1. Yes, I'll play it and enjoy.
2. No, I don't like it so I won't concern myself with it.

I guess my criteria is too simple

You know a new console generation is around the corner when people start whining about stuff like that. This was like ten times worse on 1up back in the day. It was funny at times.

Something big needs to happen in gaming so I can switch this yucky avatar. I haven't watched Saltybet in weeks, novelty wore off quick when I realized I was at a perpetual disadvantage for not being on that shit 24/7. I can't really think of anything creative for GTAV or Pokemon X/Y either. Help me, gaming dieties.

Tempted to make one for Kiss Land just for the colour scheme.

Yeah that set ended up being crazy hype between Justin and Nemo. It was actually 15-14 Justin clutching it out at the end. The lack of experience against Storm and Akuma definitely hurt Nemo.

Nemo then played against PRRog, the first set was like a 15-6 stomp after which PRRog had a salty rage quit. The 2nd set was much closer but once Nemo downloaded him he ran all the way with a long winning streak to 15.

The sets:

Y'all ever get the feeling you want to play a game, but then look at everything you have and say "I don't want to play any of this right now?"

I'm perplexed at my own feels right now.

you need a real live in person sesh, man. I get so apathetic about fighting games if I haven't hit people up for games in a while

or maybe a nice big major or something to spike your interest

...nah

I remember Justin beating Nemo 16-14 had not realize it was Nemo's team. I clearly remember Storm giving Nemo trouble.

I think what he meant was Nemo using team Nemo. Since Tokido is using the same team and Justin beat the originator, then Tokido should be no problem. Not that Justin used Team Nemo against Nemo himself.

No problem. Definitely doesn't hurt to try.

Running cables around your home isn't too bad. You could probably find cables to match the colours of your walls and screw in those cable holders to make it look more tidy.

I don't think Tokido vs Justin would be too exciting regardless of whether they're playing Street Fighter or Marvel.
For the former, too heavily stacked for Tokido, the latter for Justin.

They should both play Skullgirls or something.

I'm pretty sure last time these guys faced each other in tournament (SF), Justin won. No?
