If they wanted to make a sequels to the main numbered FF games..... then with DIFFERENT cast of characters and a different story.

No more to be continue sh*t or getting the main characters dragged for unnecessary quest that hurt the image of the original one.
This is what I thought. Personally speaking, I'd even want it set centuries away from the immediate game to give a good amount of distance from the main title. I've always said, there are two periods I would want to see explored in a prequel and sequel to FFVII, a prequel revolving around the Calamity from the Skies, and a sequel that takes place sometime after the post-credit scene of FFVII(hundreds of years after FFVII). I always felt the compilation of FFVII was too cluttered as far as "world ending" events were concerned. You basically had 5 different world ending events within the span of 5 years:

The threat of Genesis in Crisis Core
The threat of Zircondiade in Before Crisis
^(both of which, the final battles seemingly happened closely around the same time, which was shortly before the start of FFVII itself)

The threat of Meteor and Sephiroth in the main game
The threat of Geostigma and Sephiroth in Advent Children
The threat of DeepGround and Omega in Dirge of Cerberus

That being said, I'm still for new installments.

Also, knowing there are changes, I kinda hope that if the three battles against
Jenova BIRTH, LIFE and DEATH
are still in, they at least give them each a different, unique look instead of just palette swapping 'em.

I find many of those PAL estimates lower than I think they should be but pal data is very hard to get so I couldn't really know :/

Also rereleases are not counted right? not even X/X-2 hd that had retail?
Much of the PAL data is likely out of date, we've not gotten any new official numbers in quite some time, the older data should be good though.

The remaster is not included but international versions, zodiac, last mission etc. releases in Japan are included.

That reminds me, I remember hearing that X HD was outselling LR. I wonder if that kept up.
Last NPD update I have is from last June:
Lightning Returns: FFXIII PS360 213,000 Jun.14
Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD PS3+Vita 276,000+115,000 (projected) Jun.14

Anyone care to share more recent data? This is LR after only four months.

*Edited for vita's sake

Exactly. Their downfall began with FF XIII. I don't even know why they even made two sequels to it, as it's not very memorable at all. FF XIV was even worse before the reboot of it.

They have a lot to prove to fans that FF can be saved.
Hasn't FFXIV ARR shown that SE still has potential?

I'm curious what the stuff at Fort Condor will be like. I got a kick out of that. lol

And I LOVED that imagery of Phoenix on top of the mountain.

This. I doubt the FF fanbase would be united enough to create an RPG Maker game, let alone the remake of FFVII.

I really hope it was not. My trust in Tabata is extremely shaky as of late. I'm just saying it's not his fault in my head over and over again so I don't straight up skip on FFXV...
He's generally seemed pretty aggravated in those videos so I don't think it was.

Speaking of Emerald weapon, how would action combat even works underwater? Unless they flat out remove this superboss, that would suck hard. Emerald weapon was the most challenging boss in FFVII.
They could just throw in a bit about some kind of materia creating a breathing field or something.

They could just place the Emerald Weapon in a cave that could act as a big arena, reachable only with the submarine. Stuff like this doesn't worry me that much.

I know that they said that FFXV won't get sequels, but I find it hard to believe that after spending that much time (and money) building such big worlds, assets and so on, FF7Re and XV won't get at least some DLC chapters.

In that case I wouldn't mind exploring and expanding some of the main cast backgrounds like Vincent and Lucretia past, or even snippets of the main story from the Turks perspective, how Avalanche formed etc.

If they wanted to make sequels, I completely agree: different characters, different story, just in the same world.

Or have a quest to lure him out of the water for battle, with the quest taking place underwater and utilizing the materia, but the combat still being on land afterwards.

FFX had plenty underwater battles.
Yes, and that was turn-based.

If they're going for realism, there's no way an action combat would work underwater well without making the controls clunky. Even Witcher 3 only allows Geralt to use crossbow underwater and nothing else.

But honestly, I think we should realistically expect the underwater section to be cut. Too much hassle, too little gain. Keys to Ancient would be scattered all over the world map, sunken Gelnika would probably no longer be sunken and found crashed in the desert and Emerald weapon would be found in a secret cave on a deserted island instead.

Speaking of LR, isn't that supposed to be coming to PC at some point? Been quite on that front.

I wonder if a tweaked system like LR could work for a 3 person party. . But then I I'd rather have crisis core's combat instead if it's going to try and be more actiony.

Edit. Is it even going to be limited to 3 person parties? Always kind of felt that was more due to the weak ps1 hardware than anything else. FF before that never dropped below 4.

A prequel game would be awesome. There's actually a lot of unexplored territory with VII's universe, especially regarding Jenova and where exactly it came from and why.
And they should make those connections to FFX clearer

I think Nomura's been playing it pretty smart with his rhetoric about whatever the gameplay is. He won't drop any bombs but he's giving out enough hints.

Like the, uh... Underwater materia?
I thought that just allowed for breathing. It doesn't make it easier to move around in the water, does it?

They could just add that detail in if they wanted. I think it could be kind of cool to be in a massive dome space under the sea while fighting the nightmare known as Emerald Weapon.

If he tells us what it is without actually showing it, it's also going to draw criticism because it's obviously going to be different enough that it'll anger a portion of the fanbase.

He needs to actually show it to hopefully prove the concerned wrong, and that whatever changes he made is for the betterment of FFVII:R

Y'know, I was never one of those who believed the origins of Jenova was tied to
FFX.
The reason being because what Nojima said about the connection. He said that
"...when traveling to distant planets becomes possible, the Shin-Ra Company is founded on another world, or something like that....... That would happen about 1000 years after this story, I think.", meaning Shinra Company is found 1000 after FFX-2. Shinra Company was found sometime in the past couple hundred years from the immediate time in FFVII(the Mako harvesting Eletrical Company was found in 1976, to be exact). That would mean Shinra's(the character from Spira) descendants would perfect space travel sometimes less than 1000 years before FFVII, arrive on Gaia(FFVII's planet), intermingle with the already present natives and find the Shinra Company shortly before FFVII.

Some might say, "But, I thought the humans on Gaia were also originally from Spira, as in the Cetra were originally Spirans that travelled via spacecraft to Gaia?". If my theory is correct, Shinra's(again, the character) descendants arrive on Gaia over 1000 AFTER the coming of Jenova and the Cetra's numbers dying off. The Cetra and majority of Gaia's humans(which were once Cetra too) are native that world. The Spirans(again, Shinra's descendants) would've arrived far later, probably around Gaia's Middle Ages, which I guess could make an interesting story(one with classical FF themes with sci-fi elements, well, not unlike a lot of classic FF games, actually).

That's why I try not to pay too much attention to Nomura's ramblings. I really need at least a basic description of the battle system. Otherwise it's a waste of time and energy to discuss it, even if it's easy to get lured into it.

I thought it was pretty clear that what you said is the "canon" history of the game. I didn't know that there were people who thought opposite.

Is it actually listed as PS3+PSP in NPD? *Sigh* Even NPD forgets about the Vita.

FFX had plenty underwater battles.
I think the poster's point is that battle wouldn't work with an action combat system, unless they make a unique set of mechanics just for it.

There's are some "fan theories" that the Spirans brought Jenova over from Spira as a pyrefly experiement based on Sin, which they believe is the reason why it can "assume the form of the dead". Other theories say that Spirans created Jenova on Spira, then it destroyed Spira, so the remaining Spirans traveled to Gaia, abandoned technology and became the Cetra, and Jenova traveled from planet to planet to find them. But yeah, that IS just fan theory and it doesn't match up with what Nojima said, as well as the FFVII timeline. The facts would be:

- Nojima said 1000 after FFX-2 is when Shinra Company was found on Gaia.
- Take into account that it wasn't Shinra who would do this, but his descendants, generations later.
- Shinra (Electrical) Company was found 1976(Shinra Manufacturing was found something earlier).
- FFVII takes place in 0007 of the new millennium(to compare with the other dates, it would be similar to 2007)
- Event of the "Calamity from the Skies" occurred estimated 2000 years before FFVII(0007), and given Shinra Company being found in the more modern time, would also mean this happened on Gaia BEFORE the events of FFX and FFX-2 happened on Spira.

I will forever believe FFVII and X have absolutly NO connection. Nothing was ever said as "these games ARE connected" just that the authors have mused about how they could connect them. I think its silly that just because a characters name is the same as a future company on a different planet we somehow need to make a connection between them. Are we to assume all Cid's, Wedges and Biggs are connected also?

I say we just chaulk this up to something as silly as the Tommy Westphall Universe Theory.

And he did it before the announcement. So it was indeed a troll =X

I wonder what will happen next time he appears on stage in a conference.
Looking back that makes that whole thing funny as hell.

At least we have a confirmation of no new characters. This gives me hope that they won't touch the original script too much.

They probably won't touch the original outline much, but I'm fairly certain the script itself will be mostly new. There's no reason to be restricted to the same lines and dialogue framework when you're going to be redoing everything. Nomura specifically said Nojima isn't credited just for his work on the old game.

That's true. Localization will make or break this game. Hopefully they would hire Alexander O'Smith and his team to handle that.

While a new localization is welcomed, and the voice acting to be well done, I kinda hope there is a "classic" mode where I can just read blue text windows.

Edit: by classic mode, I mean a way to just read through the text instead of just watching cut scenes.

True, I just find something relaxing about reading the text rather than listening/watch the characters act. I'm starting to imagine FFVIIr as having tons of cinematic not unlike Metal Gear that are laboriously acted out. What happens/ is acted out in a ten minute scene I could have read through in a minute or two.

In Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus, Cid has dug up an entire fleet of ancient airships from an unknown civilization and which just happen to look like Spiran airships.

"This is talking about when the project first started, of course I’m well aware of my role now (laughs)."

The classic mode is the HD port of FFVII on PS4.

I don't think it's unreasonable to have an option to disable voice acting. No harm having options.

Wouldn't that depend on the game. Sometimes options are not possible because it doesn't make sense. Would it make sense to have an option for Uncharted where you disable voice acting? Or GTAV?

I made this post in the other thread that got locked, which I intended to use to spur additional discussion, but well...

Looking at games such as Ys III to Oath in Felghana, KH: Chain of Memories GBA to the PS2 Re:Chain of Memories, The Sega CD Lunar 1 and 2 to the PSX Lunar 1 and 2 Complete Editions, Seiken Densetsu 1 (i.e Final Fantasy Adventure for the GB) to Sword of Mana on the GBA, and even Resident Evil from the PSX to the Gamecube version.

I think most of these remakes were well received because they they resembled the original games they were based on in a reasonable fashion instead of overhauling them into something that alienates what was there in the original game or at least maintained some similarities to another more recent game in the series in general.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect FF7's Remake to follow along line the list of games I've mentioned comparatively from their original versions to the remakes.

Final Fantasy may be about changes and trying new things. However this would make sense with an entirely new game. I would think the concept of a "Remake" is to capture the appeal and aspects that made the original game enjoyable to begin and expand on that, make it better, improve it, minimize the negative aspects of the original and highlight the positives instead of outright abandonment and making it something nearly unrecognizable.

I can understand but imo it is unreasonable considering the Money they'll spend on VA for XII level dub directed by Kagari and Duckroll.

The subtitles appearing in a retro blue text box however....
Sounds like a perfect combo to be honest.

Voice acting for the new, with the subtitles in the classic blue box for the old.

It didn't make sense that the best idea to sneak into a horny man's mansion is by making a tough, battle-hardened man looking like an attractive lady whose sex appeals somehow exceed that of actual women either.

That's not the same thing at all....

There's a difference between why bother recording VA and a game not taking itself too seriously....

Just kidding. Voice acting should be on by default, no doubt about that. But I say it'd be nice if there is an option to disable it. Hell, they can add another option of the classic floating text box as suggested here or by default, the more modern text at bottom of screen approach. Options, people. You are in control of your preference.

But these are just 'it'd be nice if they did that, but not a big deal'.

lol, I just clicked on this thread and saw I was on the wall of shame for not knowing kagari. sorry guys.
Well just to put things in perspective I think that the first page should be updated with Verendus posts as well, in which he confirms it's not exclusive ¿yet?, that for now it is coming to PS4 first

If it's not coming to Xbone I can't understand why Sony don't just come out and say it's a PS4 and PC game? What's stopping them?

You've answered your own question there.

So is there any realistic chance of this getting that 2017 date for release to coincide with the anniversary? Given the amount of work that would be needed for this I doubt it even if it coming out then would make for good marketing.
None.

FFXV, KH3, then you can start worrying about this and XVI. It's not something they'll rush, and considering where they are now, I'd give Nomura and Kitase a million dollars personally if they make this game for 2017.
And also this last part...

[...]

Ah so it is coming to the Xbox One down the line? Sony can't secure shit, the incompetence cobtinues. Great news for Xbox One only owners though, they deserve to play the game as much as PS4 and PC people.
Hey, hey.

It's not incompetence. As it stands, things are great for SCE. Game is in development, and it's coming to PS4. Securing a big game isn't that simple. Square Enix also has to take a look at a lot of things, and what makes sense for them at the end of the day, is what's most sensible. Considering how far we are, and the nature of these things, we can amend things in the future, if it makes sense. But regardless of any of that, SCE is going to benefit the most from this game. FF is a Playstation franchise. SCE will get behind this in a huge way, and the marketing campaign for it will be big too. Regardless of whatever ends up being the most sensible option, SCE has already benefitted the most.

Securing big games takes a lot of cash, and simply doing it to appease fans for something as silly as "bragging rights" would be pretty stupid. Depending on what's involved, that support could be provided to bring another game from somewhere. Regardless of any of that, it's coming to PS4 first. That much can be assured. Beyond that, it's mostly SE's decision. But people shouldn't buy too much into the whole it has to be on PS4 only or whatever, in case they end up being disappointed in the future, as if it's some kind of personal offence.

SCE is really happy with things as they are. I see no reason why others need to be upset about it.
