As someone who never played the original, I really hope they don't try to hard to make it "their own". I'd like to enjoy the game without the constant complaints from the traditionalists. Putting your own spin on a 20-year old classic is a risky proposition.

To be honest, the only thing I want them to avoid big time is that FFXIII stuff of changing your damn clothes (so called"jobs") all the damn time.

Turn based, action or strategy all are fine to me. The true heart of FVII to me lies in it's fantastic world design, music and storyline (in the sense of that it has many iconic and memorable moments and paces very well). I just want the exploration to be truly amazing. A large part of FVII was mashing X to win anyways.

My sweet spot would be something with free movements leaning towards real-time combat, but allows for many different playstyles and rewards actual strategy and good builds.

If you're going to do a non canon "Aeris lives" thing just go all out with it. Have her return all clad in white and really powerful a la Gandalf when he returns in Two Towers

I'm down for turn-based stuff, but no waiting for bars to fill up or standing in lines opposite the enemies. FFX's CTB is good because it's so damn fast; so is FFX-2's ATB Kai or FFXII's ADB because they allow for simultaneous turns.

As for presentation, I'm just talking about how engaged the combat animation is. Definitely agree with you that dark and edgy is bad; someone earlier in the thread posted that they want FFVIIR to keep around the weirder enemies from the original like the house from the junkyard and I totally agree.

Also, totally calling it now that the final title of this is "FFVII: Reunion."

Except for the lack of being able to skip summons, FF VII ATB set to active wasn't slow at all. It was faster that most JRPG from that era.

I'd agree to have something like X-2, but I don't really want an action battle system for this game.

If you're going to make an action RPG, at least get the feeling of swinging Cloud's Sword right or shooting bullets with Barret.

I better be able to do cool stuff with Vincent!

I think they'll use Luminous Studio. Or whatever they're using for Dissidia unless that is UE4. Heh.

KHIII was moved to UE4 because Luminous is being developed alongside FFXV and they needed an engine, I'm pretty sure it's a safe bet that FFVII is on UE4.
Also Dissidia is probably UE4, it looks like it.

i honestly don't see the reason to shake up the combat system. FF7's combat system has aged fine in my opinion. It could use a few tweaks and modifications but it doesn't need to be replaced with something else.

Plus if you suddenly give the game an FF15 or KH3-ish system, aren't you inherently taking away some of selling points from one of those games and also taking away a selling point of 7?
Yes, I agree with that. Which is why I thought your comment "I hope the FF7 combat is like FF7's" was, whilst humorous in tone, actually serious in meaning.

Definitely agreed that it shouldn't be an ARPG, yeah (I'd call Kingdom Hearts and FFXV and LR:XIII ARPGs, but not FFX-2 or FFXII or FFXIII/XIII-2). But something akin to FFX-2 or FFXII's turn systems would be totally cool with me, and I definitely won't settle for a separate battle screen in 2015 - encounters should take place on the field screen. I'm not saying eliminate the battle theme or the victory theme, of course, but keep them as something that gets played for more special occasions instead of thousands of times over the course of the game.

The thing you lose by going 'full ARPG' is the potential size of a command set and the need for gameplay based on reflexes rather than based on good decision-making - but I do want the fastest turn-based system they can figure out, definitely including actions taking place simultaneously, and maybe including AI control of teammates if and only if it's always possible to jump in and supersede the AI a la FFXII (and I'd rather they save us from needing to customize that AI with too fine a comb - gambits were neat but probably too complex).

I'll really be happy with any approach:

-- just a visual overhaul with every other mechanic and plot point in place

-- more of an "inspired by" take, with lots of narrative differences and new mechanics

Will say the Midgar rendering certainly looks more or less exactly like what one would expect in 2015, so it's obviously not going to be overly stylized or departing from the expected visual cues.

Barrett's arm cannon thing being so much slimmer is interesting, though. My gut says it means this is going to be as realistic as they can make it -- which leads to so many questions about the more fantastical elements, like Cait Sith and Red XIII and whatnot.

You know, it'll be really interesting to see how this pans out. Like, the original was really reliant on pre-rendered backgrounds and fixed camera angles because those were pretty much the standard at the time. Now it's the total opposite; fully rendered backgrounds and a moveable, player controlled camera are the new standard. I wonder how they're approaching this kinda stuff for the remake. Like, will the keep the fixed camera angles because that's how it was in the original, or will they go for the free moving camera? If they do go for the free moving camera, how much of the area layouts are going to have to be changed to accommodate? I'm questioning whether this game will truly be a remake, or if it's closer to a 'reimagining'.

Either FFX style with dynamic, fixed camera angles or full reign with redesigned dungeons - looking at you, Temple of the Ancients - is fine by me

Personally I'd prefer a camera akin to FFXV for exploration. I want to see Midgar in all of it's low life steam punk glory

Some random thoughts:

- If its UE4 than I guess that Arkham Knight would be a comparable game regarding 'semi-realistic' style and graphics. FF7R could actually pull out some more fancy enviromental stuff if they work with fixed camera viewpoints during the explorable areas, no need to render a full 3d city :)
- Combat system: I dont mind something that's turnbased and is in line with what FF13 did
- Story: if it's a faithful remake I`ll be fine with that, but it would be even better if they pitch in some new subplots (maybe some more Avalanche stuff in the beginning, or some playable 'memories' from partymembers). Some new sidequests are always welcome
- I hope they put all the minigames in.

The most ironic thing is that I've owned and played VII since I was seven years old but never got around to the third disc until two weeks ago. Good for me, I guess, saves me the trouble. I wonder if (since the game will very obviously be M unless they cut stuff) suggest a little bit more than the PS1 game did regarding Cloud and Tifa's night under the stars.
The ultimania said they had sex afaik.

By your definition, it will probably be a reimagining

I really hope they go for fixed, but with maybe some extra viewpoints to change things. Maybe there are some new NPCs hidden behind the buildings ;P

So what has the threads concensus on changes and censorship?

The cross dressing, implied rape, implied sex between cloud+tifa, the weird things like Mr. Hangman and Sailor Suit Nanaki?

SE has never disappointed me with any battle system they've made.

Sure, it may be different, but it most likely won't be bad unless you go in with a negative mindset.

Implied rape could probably go, not worth the headache it could bring

Sailor suit Nanaki absolutely needs to be realized in the corniest, most Scoobydooesque manner possible

I REALLLLLYYYYY hated 12's battle system and 13's was the whole reason I dropped it.

I don't mind it being like FFXV/Crisis Core but I'd MUCH MUCH MUCH rather it be traditional ATB

They can change whatever they like as long as they think it's for the better. I wouldn't want them to shoehorn trivial things that might seem out of place in the big picture.

FFXIII was ATB, and it has my favourite battle system in FF.

I want them to make it ATB as it would be faster to make a more balanced game because of it, but at the end I think whatever they do it'll be great.

I'm against all censorship all together, I really want them to change not a thing.

I know this means MA rating in modern times, and the implied rape could set off the social justice cloud especially as it's implied homosexual rape and SE probably is very afraid of that.

And I really agree about Nanaki, it'll be funny if they do it with this type of realistic graphics.

I don't want them to turn the game into some super serious mess, FF7 was light hearted as times and didn't always take itself seriously.

That implied rape was optional, right? I can see that go (tbh I never saw it like full rape myself).
The rest is part of the story, and I don't think they'll scrap it.

What's the draw to reaction videos? It's just feeding the vanity of those who care so badly about what others think of them. It's really got little to do with the game announcement itself. The reactions are always the same in every one of these. You could mix up the Star Wars trailer reactions with these reactions and nobody could tell the damn difference. Yes it's exciting, yes everyone is pumped. Can't we just infer that others had the same exact reaction as you or I? These aren't even genuine reactions because they know they are on camera so they put on a whole show about it.

I feel like if you care about a franchise to this extent then your own solitary experience should be enough without having to inflict your vanity on the world.

It is interesting but I really don't think a change in graphical style should force any kind of censorship on the game. I mean, the game is being sold today with all of those things included, and no one is asking to have the game pulled.

It's not really a matter of censorship when we can't tell if the implied rape was part of the actual dialogue or just a translation thing

I mean, would it be censorship if we had Tifa not tell Barret to stop acting retarded when he gets tired from climbing the Shinra stairs?

I think it would.

I hope they don't remove retard as an insult to please certain people as well.
