Final Fantasy Type-0 PSP vs. PS4 comparison video

Will buy once price drops. Graphically, it looks "okay". The reviews out of Japan have been very good, and the few people on GAF who have played Type-0 enjoyed the character development and lore. Isn't that the main reason why most people play FF games, not the graphics?

It's downright shameful for SE to charge $60 for an up-rezzed PSP game that came out 4 years ago that has had features stripped out. They know people will buy it because it never came out here and they're throwing in a FFXV demo but I hope most people vote with their wallets and let SE know that this kind of crap won't fly.

TL; DR: Will buy it at $20 a year from now because I hate myself.

The main reason I enjoy the FF games I do like is due to the stat grind and combat gameplay, so that's what has to be decent for me to enjoy it.

Yeah... if the excuse of no 60fps because they couldn't get a locked 60 with THESE VISUALS... there are bigger problems that need to be addressed. If this was a cheap low budget port , sure, But this is a $60 game with visuals of a B tier ps3 game at best with closed environments and they pretty much redid everything (so the excuse of animations being tied to 30 fps should be null).

Did they ever get 60fps to work properly for the animations for the psp emulator?

Animations are not the only thing that can be locked at 30 (and a high budget doesn't nullify this possibility).

idk about the emulation though, I always played at 30 there.

To be fair, they did a lot more than just increase the resolution, but I am also uncomfortable with paying more than 40 dollars when the game likely still is limited by its PSP origins, both in the visuals and gameplay. There is the FFXV demo but making that exclusive to first print/day one copies instead of an inherent part of the product damages its validity as a justification for the price of the product. I honestly would have been more comfortable if they charged less for type 0 and pulled a GZ with Episode Duscae, just selling it separately.

I cannot believe this is a deal breaker for people.

It's not a deal breaker for me as 30 fps is my personal treshold, but I could see how someone would want 60 fps for Type-0. This ain't no traditional Final Fantasy, the fast pace and real-time nature of the combat would make it play much better with a higher framerate.

It's a to each his own situation. You fall under the Optimizer/Power Gamer type of RPG player. Others won't give a rat's ass about that and look for games that tell them a good story, etc. They're weird.

Definitely the same for me.

I played about 20 hours of the JP version w/ patch and enjoyed it, but could see it getting a bit repetitive. I do love how diverse the characters are with playstyles, though.

First thing that I noticed was how good the PSP game looked, it really did look nice.

Next, the crystal theme is the best theme in gaming for sure.

I would not be surprised if Duscae becomes available as a separate PSN download eventually. Add a Type-0 price drop somewhere down the line... baby you got a stew going.

I can see why people think the game should be $40, and I agree. But $30? This sounds a bit offensive to the team's work IMO. But that's just me.

Yep the FNC lore was handled way better than FF13 games did.

I mean I'd love to be able to look toward games like this for a good story. My problem is 98.9% of all games have miserably written stories and so I find if I don't shut my brain down before the narrative horror critically overloads my brain cells I'll end up not enjoying my experience in these types of RPGs :P

Ah, you're on my trusted GAFer list, so if you say you enjoy the combat I definitely perk up. What did you like about it if you don't mind expanding on it a bit?

How long is the game? I'm sure its been asked before, but how is the story compared to say Final Fantasy XIII?

Main story I think is shorter than FFXIII (about 35 hours or so if you power through), but there's a lot of side content. I think for a 100% playthrough you would have a 100 or so hours game. Specially if they keep the options of redoing missions on a harder difficulty (which can get pretty hard if you like that stuff).

A lot of stuff is missable also, even the airship is missable.

Looks great considering its a port of a PSP game.

Also didnt realize they had army battles in game.

Had preordered already, but now looking forward to it as a game (vs mainly for the FFXV demo)

Cool, way shorter games come out for $60 these days. I mean how does the story compare to a mainline title, like XII or XIII? Does it feel spin offy, or does it feel like a real FF title with politics and plot twists?

I've said it before, but I put this between Crisis Core and a mainline title.

It doesn't feel like Crisis Core, but it doesn't feel like FFXII. There are politics, there is a deep plot (and the world has a lot of lore), but they kinda ditch character development (story-wise) in favor of constantly throwing in new characters and having you interact with them.

It's a good story. I enjoyed it more than XIII (and I am not a XIII hater).

Yeah, one thing that's been understated is that the world has a ton of lore. It's one of the better parts of the game.

Nice, thanks for the write up. Sounds like I'll have a good time with it. I actually enjoyed XIII save for some difficulty spikes and lame doom counters for taking to long.

The shading in the original looks better, blended.

The new version has very sharp edges, flat lighting, cheesy reflections, and thus a very plastic look to its textures.

Looks like an interesting game though. Looking forward to it.

Awww <3

It felt like an expanded Crisis Core, but it removed the downtime inherent of the ATB they tried to incorporate in that game so that it's all real time. You get a lot of skills in the game, quite similar to Dissidia, and you assign them to direction + button, so you have a lot of skills to play with. The characters are all very different with weapons, skills, movement speed, and attributes. One character gets teleports (zero shift), and another will just have a dodge. The whip character can attack and pull enemies closer. Lots of stuff like that.

It felt very skill based early on. I went into a cave I shouldn't have and got wrecked by some Coeurls, but I was able to beat them on a second try through careful play, seeing enemy tells, dodging at the right time, and attacking when I should instead of just spamming. There was one battle where a golem comes out (pretty early in the game), that I got really close to beating but never did. Didn't realize I just had to survive, lol.

The cons are that you can tell it was built for a handheld. The mission structure seemed pretty much the same as Crisis Core: go to this area, beat these enemies, repeat. There isn't much diversity in the environments and I'm not sure how many enemy types there are, but seemed like a low amount. You also have to level each character individually. Not sure if there will ever be a point in the game when you're forced to use specific characters, but with 12 or 14 characters, I could see that being an issue.

I'll spoiler tag (even though there's no spoilers), but
there are two points where one character leaves and you have 13 characters and another where you have to split your team into two teams, so you have less characters, but it's still okay if you didn't level up everybody.

It is not my deal breaker. I'm going to buy it.

However, the graphic of this game is not even better than FF XIV on PS4 and FF XIV can run steady at 60 FPS.

I own FFXIV on PS4 and it doesn't run steady 60 fps. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a steady 30 fps.
