They're beyond that. You can hold off on VO for quite awhile.
At least they are beyond 25% haha

That was at the end of June. Kitase said the FFXIII scenario was "pretty much" complete in September '08.
Then 2012 would be a great time to release it. Worldwide release would be amazing though!

The more I hear about Versus the more i'm looking forward to it. Hopefully both Versus and XIII-2 wont have anything to do with synthesizing weapons though.

That's cool, I know it's meant to look more realistic, but I didn't think anything specific was being emulated.

There's a scan of the blonde shotgun guy posing with something that looks like St Mark's Basilica behind him, and in Noctis' kingdom the main twin-structure tower which is believed to be the "castle" based on the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. It's pretty cool.

For reference:

I still think VIII handled it the best, giving you those magazines, and having very few weapons, it made them actually desirable beyond their statistical improvements.

FFXIII gets a lot of shit, but I think it did a lot right in terms of pairing down the use of things like consumables etc. I hope Versus takes after XIII in that regard, if in no other.

I know the image you mean yeah, very impressive. Makes me eager to see what other cultural areas they'll be reproducing.

They should make one of the dungeons a fight along the Great Wall too. :)
What about this?

They can even blame their construction on aliens or extra dimensional beings. It's wins all round.

Final Fantasy 1 is about time travel.

Final Fantasy 4's climax involved flying to the moon in a giant whale-shaped spaceship to fight an alien threat.

Final Fantasy 5 is about an invader from another dimension, and people who could travel between dimensions using meteorite ships.

Final Fantasy 6 is a steampunk war story involving a robot army and mind control using slave crowns.

Final Fantasy 7 has high tech cities and what is essentially nuclear energy being used by a corporation to exploit the economy and control the world. It also has robots, cars, a giant cannon, guns, etc.

Final Fantasy 8 is almost a real world setting with countries and provinces, with the Gardens acting as benevolent PMCs. It also involves time travel and space travel.

Final Fantasy 9 is about a monkey race, an alien world, and genetic cloning.

That was funny

Mechs were in FFVI...
Actually, just a fun note. The mechs in Versus are outright called Magitek Armor (魔導アーマー) in the magazine articles I've seen. Same for the ones in Type-0.

I wonder why he had to wake him up right then. He's all "GET UP" and then "hey, lookie over there~"
Driver says, "Hey, looks pretty intense over there, huh?" and Noctis says something like, "Yeah... it's like we're under foreign occupation," Referring to the Niflheim airships surrounding the skyscraper in the distance.

Based on earlier trailers and the dialogue in this one, it seems that representatives from the kingdom of Niflheim come to Noctis's kingdom to negotiate a peace treaty, and then use it as cover to stage an invasion to try and force Noct's dad into seceding the throne and Crystal.

And (this is more speculative) it seems that Noct's dad refuses and passes his powers on to Noctis, but the kingdom's l'Cie defect to Niflheim and hand over the Crystal in exchange for being allowed to continue reaping its benefits.

Noctis uses the powers to fight off some of the invaders and wants to launch an assault to recapture the crystal, but Noct's friends convince him that they need to escape because they're not strong enough to succeed and because Noct being a high profile military target could cause civilian casualties. At the end, Noctis and Ignis are discussing possible strategies for getting revenge.

I know what he says... I'm just saying the situation doesn't make sense.

Ok after watching that, my quick take is..

+ Love the frentic action and energy of the battles.
+ Love the look and style of the locales and set peices
+ Good character/costume design (slick, more grounded)
+ Nice pre-canned set pieces and events
+ Absolutely jaw dropping CGI

- Still looks linear as hell
- In-game graphics aren't as mind blowing as expected
- Looks a tad repetitive both in gameplay and design
- Battles look slightly un-co-ordinated and messy
- Camera looks like it could be an issue in places

Interesting that we can actually see the in-battle transition between characters in the trailer. Looks like there must be some simple cycling buttons - and I think it's got to be two, because it looks like you can switch to either of your two companions at will rather than cycling through them only clockwise or something. I'm hoping it's something like clicking the analog sticks and not taking up two whole shoulder buttons that could be better used for something else.

Most of the action takes place on streets...most streets are linear...the action in the countryside looked anything but linear...a rather hasty observation I would say. Camera looks fine to me, although with the frenetic action it better be as smooth as in uncharted. As for graphics, I think the city stuff looks top notch, easily better than any console rpg so far and up there with the big boys...countryside stuff looks like it needs work! Combat looks early, at this stage we have seen more than we have been told.

I decided to watch the gameplay segments frame by frame, and there's definitely some interesting things going on.

The cloth and hair movement is ridiculously detailed, down to Noctis's shoelaces having movement. His hair also moves as he does, which is nice. Clothing movement is a lot more dynamic as well.

Character models are definitely higher poly than XIII was.

What's cool is that Noctis and co. summon each weapon every time they attack similar to what was shown in the very first reveal trailers.

I didn't even notice that stuff Kagari. That's really impressive.

In Media Player Classic you can pause video and arrow back and forth between frames if you want to slow it down for yourself.

No one has said story doesn't matter. NO ONE. You are the one who seems to be saying that story seems to matter above all else which is completely untrue, and you keep ignoring that point.

I am personally of the opinion that story does matter more than anything else.

This looks really good, I'm impressed and interested. (something SE has failed to do since PS2 era) How does it relate to FFXIII again? Is this Pulse before the fal'Cie?

It's not in the same world they just share the same mythology.

The mythology of FFXIII was the Maker creating the fal'Cie which then marked humans who became l'Cie or Cieth or whatever

Mythology is just mythology. It's like how games which use Greek mythology as a theme aren't all set in the same world. :P

But I don't see anything so far that makes this game like FFXIII over something like FFVIII.

FFXIII, FF VsXIII, and FF Type-0 all use the same same base mythology of FNC FF. Bunebelza, Muin, Pulse, Lindzei, Etro, l'Cie, fal'Cie, the Unseen World. Not every game uses every single element of the mythology or focus on every aspect of the legends, but it's all the same base mythology.

FFXIII is more specifically about Pulse and Lindzei. Versus is about Etro and the Unseen World. Type-0 is about mankind born of the blood of Etro. Terms like fal'Cie and l'Cie will be used in all the games, but often with slightly different meanings depending on how the people in that world have come to understand the mythology.

Square should just become a CG movie making company like Pixar.

The model in that picture looks nice, but that background looks nearlps2 quality.
