Versus shouldn't be renamed because it's going to be everything people expected from Final Fantasy XIII.

Ugh. No. Portables has no place being the home for mainline FF games. It's already tragic we got DQ9 on there.

I really don't see the problem.

Patience is a virtue...a terrible, terrible virtue.
As much as I know it takes time to get games at this kind of visual quality to a really high standard, and I'm perfectly willing to wait for it, if this game is 2014, so be it. However I think it just naturally builds up so much additional hype that the game has a taller hill to climb when it eventually sees a release.

There is literally no project as 'grand' announced that I know of, that's a huge burden on top of budgets, development cycles, pressure to move on to KH3 etc. I can't even imagine the nerve shredding pressure Nomura and the other heads are under with this project.

FFXIII already showed the glaring faults in taking the FFX style structure on to the HD consoles. If they try it again next gen it's going to cost even more to even meet the same standard, which wasn't all that impressive this time around. They have to be considering going to the portable systems I think. Versus could end up being the last massive FF project really, although that's a stretch.

I do. Changing the main series to portable would be huge and so, so, so many wouldn't buy it just for the sake of it being on portable machines.

Also, I'm one of those who says that games on portables can't be as epic as on consoles.

It's not that I don't disagree, I think they should have taken it as far away from 13's name as possible. It can still be a story about gods, they just have to name those gods something else. (Unless 13-2 completely fixes the whole story and yeah it's a long shot)

Correct me if I am wrong, but I recall seeing some talk about Etro being in FFXIII-2 or something. I'm not sure if this is what you are talking about though, but the mere fact that the same godess appears/is mentioned in both games is enough for me to know that they won't do a rename of Versus(or at least not a rename that will exclude the "XIII" part)

I like the direction of the game. One big caveat is the gameplay mechanics for me. I haven't played Kingdom Hearts except for a demo station of BBS on PSP, it just felt very mashy mashy. I hope Nomura can instill a balance of strategy and action.

See but DQ9 was absolutely awful and for all intents and purposes Agito doesn't look to be.

So, theres that.

That's their own problem. And DQ did it just fine.

The more games on NGP, the better. I wouldn't mind having Versus Lite on it

I don't think they'd be too keen on essentially slashing their profits from Western markets down a sizeable amount. Let's be real.

You can thank Japan for that though... It's going to be a significant drop of sales in EU and US.

Do we really have to stoop to this level? Final Fantasy would probably benefit from being on a portable console tbh, much like Dragon Quest, Metal Gear Solid, and Kingdom Hearts has.

The hyperbole on these matters is just so ... frustrating

The issue falls more onto the fact that DQ IX was god awful...but that of course is just MY opinion. I do not force that belief on anyone else, hyperbole or not.

I haven't had a portable gaming experience that even compares with the best of console gaming personally. But just in terms of budgets and development limitations I think SE have to be considering moving FF mainline entries to the portables.

Hence, why I said "I'm one of those" as in MINORITY. I never liked Portable Ops as much as main MGS on consoles and I certainly didn't enjoy the KH games on PSP at all compared to the PS2 one. Also DQIX is nowhere near as good as DQVIII.

Same thing goes with pretty much every game I've played on both consoles and portables including Gran Turismo, Motorstorm, Street Fighter etc etc etc.

I'm talking about Peace Walker, which is definitely better than MGS4 imo. KH: BBS is probably the best of the Kingdom Hearts games yet...and DQIX really isn't any different from the previous DQ games but I consider it better than several, even though I also prefer DQVIII. Just my opinion, but these franchises look to be benefiting a lot from portables. Not only in sales but in quality too.

I wouldn't mind getting any mainline titles on a portable console. We're already getting Kingdom Hearts 3
D
on 3DS. Isn't Kojima supposedly making a game that can be played on PS3 and NGP?

Yeah I meant Peace Walker.

But yeah, we wouldn't know if a Final Fantasy game would benefit from being on portables. I've enjoyed pretty much every FF except XIV and I wouldn't mind them continuing this way.

Yeah he is.

EDIT: Beaten

That's because it doesn't sell in the west in the first place. That is not true for FF.

I don't think so. Maybe on this board, in the subgroup of vocal JRPG fans.

the problem is, knowing Square, next-generation portable development isn't looking to be dramatically cheaper than console development thanks to a mix of higher budgets, more complex tech and smaller audiences in Western territories.

If they were to make another game on the scale of FFVI? I'm all for it. I just think that nowadays they're either too proud or too stuck in the cogs of a giant machine they can't stop to actually not go all out and make pretty art-assets and cutscenes when they set their giant A-team into motion.

So are you really implying that if Final Fantasy 15 was announced to be a 3DS exclusive, that it wouldn't sell like hotcakes?

Hell even children would be playing a brand new Final Fantasy mainline title if that happened!

If the 3DS and NGP track anywhere near the PSP and DS in terms of sales I fully expect it to become the norm.

Kagari said:
Pretty sure DQ9 is the best selling DQ outside of Japan in a while.

To be fair it's been advertised more than any other DQ game...........by far, still got those annoying twins advertising the game and it's been out for months now.

So what Square can do if we can assume FF XV will be a PS3 game is to release it on PS3 while catering to the portable crowd and release it on NGP.

Same for Versus.
No because Nomura is making it. There is a difference man!

I'm saying it wouldn't sell remotely as well as e.g. XIII outside of Japan. It could still meet your definition of hotcakes though.

I'd bet FFXIII would outsell it.

Maybe SE will do cross platform PS3/NGP development for their future big budget games. That way they cater to both Japan and the west.
