Final Fantasy VI rated for PC by PEGI

Are all the early FF games on steam the mobile versions?

yes ff3, ff4, after years, 5, 6 are all mobile ports

4 and after years has 30 fps game but 15fps battles but you can go to community guides and get a executable to make the battles 25fps

Mobile port? Mobile port.
Now with increasingly godawful UI ideas.

The mobile port is really good!

I'm playing right now, but the fixed tons of stuff.

Yes, the classic sprite art is much better, I agree.

But this one is good too. Here some of the most notable enhancements:

  • -Cyan is usable now as he charges his Bushido actively, not manually
  • -It uses the GBA localization which is much richer than the original Woosley translation, which although still good, he was limited with cart sizes and was rushed.
  • -It has all the GBA enhancements--new dungeon, new Espers, and new equipment.
  • -Menu system is much better for battling.
  • -Much better character menus--you can see what they have equipped and when they level up without going into their individual status menus
  • -Music is SNES quality, unlike the GBA version
  • -Optional hints and journal so you can keep track of your progress.
  • -Auto battle! Helps in longer dungeons.
  • -Bug fixes--No more Vanish plus Doom.

It's a really great port. Yes the graphics hurt, but the overall enhancements make it worth it.

I knew this day would eventually come, but it still makes me sad. Even as one of my top 3 favorite games of all time this thing is an abomination. Maybe I'll buy it just so I can justify to myself emulating the GBA version with a soundfix or something.

It's so weird that they don't offer these with original versions of the game. I'd even pay extra for a copy that has both just to get the original, and it would make everyone happy since you could just ignore the shit mobile version. So weird.

I wish we could have all these little additions and fixes together with the original art instead of this travesty.

Thanks for this very informative post. I didn't know about most of these pluses and now know I really want to buy when it releases on PC. Believe it or not the new art is actually one of the main reasons I'm picking it up. As someone who has played the SNES version 10+ times over the years the chance to see it with a whole new look excites me. I'm sure some changes will be worse, but just the fact that it's different is making me want to play it far more than if it was a 1:1 visual reproduction of the SNES art which I've seen so many times.

I'm probably going to FF hell for admitting to this though.

Makes me want to pick up the mobile version, but I don't really play mobile games.

Off topic I not but I wonder if The World Ends With You and the Dragon Quest mobile ports are coming considering Heroes is coming to PC. I also wonder why it's taken so long for FF1&2 to come to Steam.

Which is which on this photo?

I prefer the top one. Looks better.

Playing through DQ1 and DQ2 on mobile lately, and I think those should get PC ports more than the crappy FF6 port. Those are practically perfect outside of the weird stretched vertical resolution and no gamepad support.

Another shitty mobile port to Steam for $15, wow thanks Square I can hardly contain my excitement.
Yes, but it's worth noting that III and IV are polygonal remakes originally made for the DS, while V is a 2D game with ugly sprites.

3 and 4 are uglier than the mobile ports LOL

What's the chance someone could hack the SNES character sprites back into this?

Given that modders couldn't/wouldn't do anything for FFV I imagine it's pretty unlikely.

Best way to play FF6 is the GBA version on an emulator with the pallette fix and soundtrack restoration romhacks installed. Then you get the best of all worlds.

Ah, that's unfortunate. Apparently the town and field engine is now 3D, at least under the hood, which is probably why hacking in sprites isn't as doable.

This is happening on PS4. I doubt it'll come to PC, if Sony lend them the same support as they did with Final Fantasy X.

No idea about the platforms, just letting the guy know that it's coming.

My guess is that it will be PS4/PSV and maybe PS3 due to the Japan market.

No way is it PS4 only given the install bases of PSV/PS3 in the home market of the franchise.

It would be nice to get a PC port to play these games at modern resolutions.

The apparent holdup is Sony contributed some code to make the ports easier.

fyi FFXII:IZJS works amazing on PCSX2 and someone translated it.

and knowing this company they'll probably ruin the faces and the music in the upcoming remaster

When I stuff like and Dolphin, it's pretty crazy how good the original assets were.

A quick note for those who played and beat the SNES/SFC version of FFVI (III US)

In the original SFC/SNES version, when Celes is prisoner, the guard actually sucker punched her.

I thought it was a very well done scene back then. Remember, this was before games were considered serious entertainment, but the sense of realism, even for a game with Chibi style characters, was impressive.

And FFVI didn't frown on showing the full range emotions.

However, when the game was ported to the GBA, the original Japanese GBA FFVI port removed Celes receiving a sucker punch from the Imperial Guard while under prisoner.

She's given a sedative instead of a sucker punch.

This was done to avoid a higher consumer age rating, which was more stringent at the time of the GBA versus the SFC in the Japanese market.

So sadly, that powerful original scene was neutered. This remained the same in the US port, since it was based the Japanese GBA version and also made it to the iOS/Android versions, which are based on the GBA versions.

If you want the raw, underrated scene, you will need to play the original SNES/SFC version.

As a huge fan of the game, I'm sad a definitive version of this still doesn't exist.

I'm looking to cross Final Fantasy off my 'franchise bucket list' so this is pretty convenient for me. All those extra dodads listed earlier sounds nice but man I am not a fan of that spritework. Maybe I'll just pick up the GBA version with that visual/sound restoration mod or something. I don't know, maybe I'll suck it up.

also, why are there so many versions of FFIV like really

The change from
getting punched turned into getting drugged
seems... a lot darker honestly.

Was that port really that bad? I know the older visuals probably look nicer, but would it still be playable and enjoyable to someone who never played 6 before?

The mobile version has the highest quality music, the best implementation of ATB, the nicest battle backgrounds, and nice portraits to go with the dialogue. Some people hate the new sprite work, but nearly everything else is an upgrade. And even the upgraded sprites are debatable, as they are considerably more detailed.

The mobile game is fine. Literally any other version is better, except maybe the psx version because of the crappy load times and effect lag, but the mobile version is absolutely fine.

For me the most awful part is the UI. From Steam page:

Nice to hear, I will definitely be picking this up on the 16th. I've been playing the Steam release of V and I am rather impressed overall. Although a couple things do bug me. The tile set placement blocks can be seen at times and aren't as cohesive as SNES, the character movement can feel sloppy, and the music restarts after each fight is annoying. But aside from that the new character sprites in and out of combat have started to grown on me and look quite colorful. Character portraits are good addition as well. The redone spell effects, spiffier looking monster sprites, and added special effects for battle backgrounds and dungeons (mist, fires, crystalline glimmers from them shattering etc) look great. But most of all it's cool to see one of my favorite games redone with a new visual style, even if certain parts are questionable it's making me want to play it more than had it been a 1:1 port.

Looking forward to VI!

Edit: V GBA is still probably the best version though.

The best FF, and in my opinion the greatest RPG ever created. Play the SNES version, or the Wii Virtual console version. Please do not bother with this version.

If you're gonna go out of your way to suggest people play an old physical copy like the SNES, you might as well suggest the GBA one since it's better.
