Final Fantasy XII – PS2 Original vs. The Zodiac Age Remaster Graphics Comparison

I really like what they did with his face.

Now, if only they would change his outfit.

On PS2 version his shoulders look more round on remaster you can notice the poly edges
also i think the hair is too edited with lines should be more subtle

I think the remaster looks great, and I'm pretty hyped to play this since I never finished it back on the PS2. The QoL improvements sound excellent as well.

Eh... no.

I was a bit weirded out by her English voice at first, but in the end, I think it's a better fit than her typical Japanese tough lady VA archetype.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think her accent is Icelandic, sort of like Bjork. I think it fits, it's somewhat exotic and mysterious.

Yep, sometimes they get it right in more than one way. Both Vanille and Fang were voiced by Australian actors because those characters came 'from the land down under' in the game's world.

It's AO. They stated it's one of the graphical updates the game is getting.

I'm not saying there isn't AO, but there are also additional, higher quality shadows, look at Vaan walking around Rabanastre too.

^^^ what he said

They have the same poly edges. Much higher resolution makes them easier to spot.

Looks actually really good, wasn't my fav in the series but the last decent Final Fantasy til FFXV came out imo. I'll pick this up eventually.

They should've smoothed controllable characters' feet geometry off. At least characters like Vaan with a very noticeable sharp toe point when running.

In this Dalmasca Estersand video you can also see indirect character shadows switch to direct as Vaan runs from shade out to sunlight.

Yeah you guys are right.

I'm really really liking the new orchestra arrangements too! 5 more days...

I'm disappointed in many of the big area encompassing ground textures. Some of them look really bad with the upscale+sharpening filter algorithm. Those are textures that you see a lot so would it not be a worthwhile undertaking to redraw them from the scratch? I understand doing the algorithm thing to smaller and more situational textures but I think they should redo those massive ground textures. I like them more in the emulator shots tbh.

Same here. They really did not put a lot of work into this, and it shows.

You're being unclear because there's something you don't want to say here.

The game is being ported, there is an amount of effort going into it and the publisher intends to distribute the game in physical PS4 copies. You are saying that the remaster is not worth buying, and should be a "free mod".

But a free mod of what? There is no PC version of TZA currently.

You are simultaneously port begging and also considering it a waste of money to pay for a remaster, suggesting that the remaster and an independent PC mod "could be the same thing, if you know what i mean :)".

The PS2 version ultimately still used compressed version of their original assets. The remaster is going to be using assets that could not be obtained from ripping the PS2 game. So how could an independent PC mod be the same thing as the PS4 remaster?

less effort that other people do in other games like Skyrim, and they do for FREE, that is my point...

i dont want any ports. just want that lazy remasters that cost money stop existing ;)

and clearly you dont know that some "mods" like texture packs can be inserted in emulators :p

This was an issue in cutscenes in emulation when you played at anything but native resolution, very surprised to see the same problem on a official remaster.

comic that people will have to pay for that shitty effect that you get free on emulation

Skyrim which was actually built to have mod support and where some the modders efforts are so extensive they should be payed for it? Unlike a PS2 game that wasn't built for mod support.

No downsampling

Thanks for the shots! I'd like to give you better news, but I'm pretty sure there's no downsampling. Also, the high-res version seems to be rendering at 1440p; I got a couple larger counts as well, but nothing cleanly divisible. The relatively slight difference between 1080p and 1440p often leads to this difficulty, so I wouldn't put much confidence in the slight variability of my results. The lower number is much more likely.

Fuck you Square Enix

Can I also get the dual job class and modified enemy balance changes for free via emulation as well? Or the work involved with the original composer Sakimoto who put in the work to redo the game's music with a live orchestra (Explain this with free mods too)

These ridiculous comparisons need to stop.

Modding a game that has toolsets freely available from the developers given to the fanbase (Skyrim's Creation Kit) is in no way the same damn thing as developers using the source to change and add new content and rebalance things over the original game.

You do know that the actual game this is based on is actually more expensive than the remaster, right?
e: like right now if you want to play FFXII Zodiac version, it's actually cheaper to get the ps4 version.
