I have no idea how to use IRC and this faq isn't helping much. I'll just wait for this thread to live again.
#1.) Download Firefox
#2.) Download this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/16
#3.) Restart Firefox and open that add-on under Tools->ChatZilla.
#4.) Type /attach irc.rizon.net into the ChatZilla window.
#5.) Wait for it ChatZilla to connect to the server.
#6.) Type /join #FFXIII into the ChatZilla window.

Edit: Or do the above.

...don't know if I should preorder now or not. I can get it for $36 on Amazon thanks to $20 credit, but I know there will be some sort of collector edition announced :|...but then I'd only want to buy a CE if it was like $70-80, not like $100+. What to do...

Has there been any statements from SE about a CE?

The 20$ promotional credit expires on February 28th (if it was from MW2), well most of them do. You would need to order the game before then.

You also retain your credit if you cancel before the February 28th deadline.

I cant really see them announcing a special edition if they have still yet to reveal the boxart X_X :(

You really can't expect much from FFXIII's localization standards considering how much little time they have to finish it compared to FFXII.

But how much of that time was wasted due to development drama?
When was XII's script finished? S-E USA could have started the localization long before the drama was finally over. Regardless, FFXIII moved along much faster than XII. I seem to recall someone in the company making a commitment to getting the next game out faster, so I respect them for that. The localization, as I said before, I would expect to be somewhere in between FFX and XII.

Yes, I guess that explains why Metal Gear Solid has such piss poor localization, since they sometimes actually come out before the Japanese release. :(

Yes, but XII turned out well, and we know from whence it was spawned

Also, XII localization was the brainchild of two of the best VG translators around (one of the actual few i can name), no matter the time they were given.

Am I the only one who was looking forward to this game, but after seeing some bad melodrama in cutscenes, is reconsidering it?

I have always enjoyed Final Fantasy gameplay, but the terrible stories/acting/dialogue is finally getting to me. I'll probably get it anyways when it's about to come out and everyone is hyped up, but right now I'm actually thinking about skipping it.

I'm the opposite. I've been conditioned, like most sane people, to hate any prepubescent character in a JRPG because the VA is usually dogshit. To find that this game has one that is tolerable (to me) makes me want to play it more.

Yeah my hype levels have decreased considerably after every storyline (and gameplay somewhat) revelation they have made. This kind of stuff is borderline repulsive these days.

No.

If there is a LE, then we might hear about it in January. I'm expecting it to be crappy.

They could have just released a demo ahead of March. Maybe with a new area from the beginning of the game

Hey guys have you heard? Leona Lewis is doing the theme song.

To the Avatar film.

Wow at this rate she might exceed the number of themes that Linkin Park has done or even Crush 40 (well thats a slight exaggeration).

Anyway, the song is starting to grow on me. Though I still want to see a boxart.

You have to admit, aside from the original. MGS's localization isn't all that. And I also do believe that it is much easier to translate a modern themed game abou war into english compared to fantasy. Fantasy games usually turn out just how anime do.

My point is, I predict it'll be good, but not XII good.

Seriously, I just never tried before, but figured it out thanks to Plywood and Nirolak.

You're joking, right? It's one thing to say you dislike the dialogue, voice acting, and story (which I also can't understand) but saying the entire localization is nothing special is just ridiculous. If FFXIII's is half as good, it'll be a huge success.

Other than dialogue and voice acting translation (and all the other text), what else is there to localization?

And I agree, everything else about MGS shines unlike any other.

No, you're not. I'm absolutely nuts about the series, but the stories in the latest trailers are not helping - AT ALL. Though I think it would be absolutely crazy to skip this - it simply looks too good!! - i have low hopes for the storyline - and i am getting sick of that. There is no reason why THE biggest RPG from Japan in 2010 can't have a damn interesting, or at least nearly interesting plot - some of the scenes looked dull, i hope i'm wrong though, and that the story ends up owning.

Though I remember FFXII looking like it was going to have SUCH an amazing story with all the maturity and war and politics like in Suikoden V for example, and it ended up having little to no story. Don't skip it, it's too big to skip but you are damn right when you say that the stories/dialogue are finally getting to you, i have been playing the series since 1994 and back then the storyline seemed more mature with FF4/5/6/7/8. Back in the old days, the best part about a new FF coming out WAS the story for me. Now, i'm constantly worried.

Versus XIII, from the little that i saw, makes me wonder if it'll follow a different more interesting route in the FF world.

Bottom line, NO MATTER HOW GOOD FFXIII ends up being, if the story is shit, its going to be a BIG letdown.

The thing is, not being a fan of MMORPGS, i didn't bother much with XI, so for a true FF sequel, i had to wait 5 years between X and XII, and now i was let down big time by the plot, and for FFXIII, its been another 4 years when all is said and done, i don't want to say that I havent seen one good final fantasy story in nearly a decade.

Here's hoping Kitase and co. deliver the FF experience we've been waiting for.

I'm saying it's fine to dislike all that stuff for subjective reasons. Maybe you don't like David Hayter's raspy voice. Objectively, MGS4's localization is amazing. The voice acting is top notch, they lip synced everything well and the translation didn't feel awkward at all.

You are right that the setting helps, but it's still impressive.

I'll force myself to play it just because it's FF and I had been looking forward to it for so long, but I already know it won't touch FFXII. Disgustingly embarrassing story, characters, dialogue. The English translation just makes it even worse. Battles will quickly get annoying due to the constant 'breaks', and since there is no run feature, this could turn out to be a disaster.

FFXIV is everything I liked about FFXII....except it's a MMO, so I'll skip that. As far as I'm concerned Versus is SE's last chance to prove they can make a game worth a damn. Which might be a tall order considering who's behind that one.

I'm the exact opposite. The story, world, and characters interest me almost as much as the gameplay. I want to know more about this whole Falcie deal and Cocoon. I want to know more about Lightning's past and Serah. The dialouge is the typical anime fair, but that's what I want.

I'm just really excited that the story will be more like 6-8 and 10 rather than something like 12. I'm not worried about that at all. The battle system on the other hand....

i may be wrong, but did FFXII have a run feature? except for the use of chocobos which FFXIII looks to have?

FFXII indeed had a run/escape feature. It was either holding down L1/R1 or L2/R2 simultaneously while running away from the enemy. Eventually they'll stop chasing (maybe a couple exceptions?).

I hope it turns out great, i really do, i've been dying for a great FF story like the days of 6-8 trust me. Some people in this board know how particularly fond of Serah i am :P So i hope her plot is good enough at least.

I think the battle system will be cool, its being directed to the FFX battle system director, so im expecting great things :)

oh, running away from battle. So ffxiii doesn't have fleeing from battle? Epic fail

I can't imagine the plot will be any better or any worse then the other "next gen" FF's were. There will be some betrayal, some hidden power, bad guys becoming good, good guys becoming bad and, at some point, someone pivotal will die.

Yay Narrative.

I guess with playing so many rpgs, the characters and stories start to seem generic.

I can understand after FFX(FF9 really) there's been hard to find this one person in a FF that was as awesome as Ceccil/Shadow or as bad as Sephiroth/Kefa or as messed up as Cloud or as romantic as Tidus/Yuna and Squall/Rinoa/Seifer or as transexual as Kuja or as hot as Rikku/Lulu or as interesting as Vivi/Red XIII or.....well you get my point.

I do believe that FF13 will establish itself as well known for SOMETHING or SOMEONE in the FF universe.....

Haters be hatin'

With that aside I just listened to the American theme song for the first time and my initial reaction was "Well this is an odd song to choose..." but now I'm really starting to like it.

It's ok. At least it doesn't take up too much space. Be glad it's not a new "I am the Wind". :P

For me: the world(and lore), the prose and gameplay are all i care about (but i think this is because i have given up on characters and plot).

I will still complain about any inadequacies, but that is only because i love to bitch...
