Final Fantasy XIII on Steam October 9th, $16; full trilogy by Spring 2015

Yeah in this case the message is really weird. It would be hilarious if they actually region-locked certain content in the game. By hilarious I mean fucked up.

If you look on GreenManGaming and their page for Final Fantasy XIII, it says this:

The following languages are available for this title:

ROW Package: Audio: English, Text: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish

Asia Package: Audio: English & Japanese, Text: English, Japanese, Chinese & Korean text

It sounds like two different versions to me but I'm not sure. I genuinely can't think of a reason why they would need this. Just have everything in one package.

I'm conflicted about this, because I want Japanese audio but then I remember Fang's Eng voice and I just melt. T_T

What have I done................

........WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST DO?!!

I don't agree with this.

Yeah me either. Mayaa never pulls off the cold yet somewhat tough voice like Hillis did. While the point was that it was a bit fake, she still is a mentally focused and tough person. I never feel Mayaa ever achieved this.

Of course Hillis seemed to get shitty in the sequels.

So in essence this price tag is probably bad news in a way. Can't see them putting much effort into the port and making it this cheap.

She excellently portrays the dry cardboard-like personality of Lightning. Her getting worse over the course of the next few games was I think directly correlated with the trajectory of Lightning herself.

According to steamdb:

JAPAN/ASIA Area,Sub ID 41110,only Japanese voice, support Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, English. But only allow run and activate in some asia country (onlyallowrunincountries = JP MN KR TW LA TH HK VN PH BN MY SG ID KH MO)

Russia and CIS Area, Sub ID 49968, only English voice, support English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, only allow run and activate in Russia and CIS Area

Rest of the World: Same as Russia and CIS Area but without run and activate limit.

I'm all in! This is one of the things I like showing off the most on the net.

I prefer Hillis too, though I think Maaya did better at LR.

Oh that was you're rationale. Oh well I guess if that works for you, but I don't believe she was a cardboard in FFXIII. She was a cold and detached person, but clearly had reasons for it. She wasn't a strong or engaging enough character to hold all of XIII, but she did'nt so it was ok. Yet, she really had no business being pushed as someone major in the sequels.

So, now that FFXIII is coming out on Steam, can we assume PC versions of XV and the rest of the mainline FF series are a given?

Squenix are all like 'but.....everyone hates this game WTF!?' in their offices right now after looking at the steam sales.

Truth be told the big budget JRPG market on steam is a severely under-served market and i imagine people are buying it just for the novelty of it.

This will do really well and i imagine will get people thinking about other JRPGs

Wait, are you sure the Japan/Asia version has no English voices? That would be really stupid!

I disagree actually. I like a lot of the JP cast, and I'm a huge fan of Maaya Sakamoto, but she doesn't excel in the "tough girl" role at all. Her Lightning comes off as somewhat bland and uninteresting while trying too hard to sound like what people expect the character archetype to sound like. I think she has similar problems playing Aya in 3rd Birthday, and Motoko in GitS Arise. It's just not an interesting performance.

I don't agree with this.

I'm not really familiar with Sakamoto's work since I rarely watch anime and even if I do I don't usually remember who voices which characters. I found Hillis to be more bland than Hillis though and has less emotional range when it comes to playing Lightning, even though Lightning is not one to show much emotions. I have to say that part of my preference for Sakamoto could stemmed from being exposed to her version of Lightning first before listening to Hillis' version. So that probably affects my view on who plays a better Lightning. Ultimately my preference stems more from me disliking Hillis' Lightning and not because I think that Sakamoto plays the role perfectly.

Well according to the GMG link its english and japanese audio but who knows.

I don't get it though. Under what daft reasons would Square Enix have to not give everyone the same languages ? Fuck sake it's not even like the game is new or anything.

Guys it's Square! They'll make it paid DLC like they did for Tomb Raider.

I'd gladly pay for it, because atleast it's an option at that point. And when the other games in the series/ KH potentially come over, I'd want the same dual-audio options there.

I won't comment on who is the 'better' Lightning, because I can't stand any of the characters thanks to the horrible writing (Sazh is dabes though).
I imported it and couldn't even make it back to where I was in the English version, as the localization wasn't the problem; the dialogue was poop from the get-go.

This is really scary but kind of awesome if you were a crazed Lightning/XIII fan.
Are you sure you're not Toriyama? :P

Wait, are you sure the Japan/Asia version has no English voices? That would be really stupid!

While I browse steam shop using Japan VPN I get this:

The following Asian languages are supported by the version of this game released for Japan and the rest of Asia.

Subtitles and interface: Japanese, Chinese (traditional), Korean, English
Voiceover: Japanese

So maybe?

Thinking about it I wonder if this comes with that easy mode the Japanese got patched in? I'd be all in for that for a quick play through for story purposes

I'm conflicted. I can't tell if Hope's VA is terrible, or if it's just because I hate every stupid word that comes out of his face.

He's a big whiner at the start and into the middle, he gets 'better' later on. But you'll get tired of the inspirational speeches all the characters give after a while. I almost torre eyes out after the fifth time somebody said "we just have to belive in the path we 're choosing!" and they had to stand there espousing in front of the group

Too bad no body ever got new outfits other than stupid snow in LR...:/

Was hoping for new Fang and Sazh outfits..Really cool characters.

I don't get it though. Under what daft reasons would Square Enix have to not give everyone the same languages ? Fuck sake it's not even like the game is new or anything.

One reason I can think of would be that this is the absolute minimal effort they're putting into the release, and so instead of taking the chance to use Steam to distribute the right language offerings based on the language selected in the Steam options for the game, they're simply splitting it between regions based on the retail offers they had for the game on PS3/360.

I think the Japanese and English versions of the game use different video files, and also have different songs. So they might just be bone-headed enough to treat it as two different games and are only offering one in each territory.

This whole thing is random as fuck and I hate Lightning as much as the next guy.... But I never played XIII-2 and this other game I don't want to mention, so I guess there is a chance I'll get this at some point. Price is okish.

Hmmm. So the US version of this game doesn't support Japanese audio? That's what at least mentioned.

Please read before purchasing this game:
The following languages are available for this title:
Audio: English
Text: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish

This could really be potentially not feasible from a download standpoint.

I remember LR Japanese voice patch was quite huge.I think it was 2~4 GB or so.This could be the reason.

It's totally feasible. Steam allows publishers to set specific optional files to download only when the user selects the languages which require them in the options. If you want to play Bioshock Infinite in Japanese for example, you just have to set the game language to Japanese in Steam, and it'll start downloading all the JP files. :)
