Final Fantasy XIII on Steam October 9th, $16; full trilogy by Spring 2015

To all the people that bought FFXIII and brought it to the Steam best seller list:

Purchase cancelled.

KH3 is a tougher sell since none of the other KH games have been even digitally distributed

Disney doesn't go that route

That's not entirely true. The problem is that Disney doesn't see the DD market as important and so digital distribution of Disney games is something that has to be pursued -- despite the presence of digital Disney games on Amazon there still hasn't been a single Disney game available digitally anywhere else, including Steam.

In the case of KH it might be a bit more than that, especially since the arrangement for the series seems somewhat atypical for Disney to begin with. Way back when people were wondering why Birth by Sleep wasn't on PSN when almost all PSP software was going digital along with retail, iirc someone talked to a S-E rep at some event and they were told that for KH it was a license holder issue.

That's my broader point. And since Disney owns the Kingdom Hearts IP, I think it'll be interesting what happens, especially because I think Sony and Microsoft require their retail games to also be available digitally. Maybe that's the thing that will push for a PC release as well, just to tag along.

But thus far no KH game has been released digitally, even given the opportunity (Birth by Sleep, HD ReMIX, 3D: Dream Drop Distance).

Isn't Disney Infinity available digitally ?

Surprisingly, yes! Even on PC. But along with what JaseC pointed out, it's an exception. Hopefully a turning point!

really? Never heard about it.

I may need to dig up confirmation of that, but it was something that was sort of accidentally mentioned by John Vignocchi (executive producer of Disney Infinity) during the Giant Bomb PAX Livestream. They pressed him on it and he said he couldn't talk about it (or something to that effect)

Yeah, Disney is listed as distributor on the Wikipedia pages for the games so I assume it has final say on how they're pushed out to customers.

That may be hoping for a bit much. ;) I myself would love for Lego Pirates to show up on Steam once Valve abolishes Greenlight in favour of a Google Playesque autonomous publishing system (which I think is just around the corner), but that'd still require initiative on Disney's part, haha.

Square just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the Japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase FFXIII for any system, nor will they purchase any of Square's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Square has alienated an entire market with this move.

Square, publicly apologize and cancel FFXIII for PC or you can kiss your business goodbye.
I get this is a meme? XD
Anyway good news, maybe I'll finally get to play it, I stopped at 10 hours mark or so on PS3 and never found the will to go on...

Good news for PC owners who were interested in this, and it also increases the chances of FFXV coming to PC. I'll pass on this for now, since I have it on PS3, but if someone comes up with some awesome mod for it, I'm there.

Well...like Square Enix before them, I think its time for them to explore it.

So apparently the ver. of FF13 in my region will get me both JP and English voices since I am Asia? Hmm I'm more partial to the Eng. dub TBH.

The KH franchise is a very unique case which probably wouldn't happen today with the current Disney management. I don't think anyone knows the specifics of the deal, but it's definitely not a normal licensing deal or a developer-for-hire deal. What we do know is that Square Enix has significant creative control over the franchise, they publish the games and they develop them. Disney owns the overall IP, including all the characters designed by Nomura for the games, and they have veto rights on what parts of their properties can be used in the games and in what fashion. It's a relationship which doesn't get made very often at all with big properties like this, so whoever managed to put it together in Japan must have done a lot of drinking with important people. Lol.

I don't get it why. Disney has tons of games on the AppStore

In theory, could Disney take Kingdom Hearts and have another developer make and publish them?

I never would have thought the FF13 360 rant would ever be relevant again, but I am glad it is. Great post.

Have to say though I hope this sells. I hated FF13's writing and gameplay, but a lot of people enjoyed it and that's great. If the sales of this determine the chances of XV, Type-0, heck maybe even FF10HD or an actual FF9 port coming to Steam, then I sure hope this performs well. Looking above I'm gonna hold my breath on KH3 ever coming to Steam, but hey, I'm gonna remain hopeful either way on that.

Might pick up FF13-2 once it comes around. Heard that's generally a bit better than 13-1.

I think that depends on the contract they have with S-E. Like I said, we only know what we can actually see and what interviews say. Disney owns the copyrights and the trademarks, so in theory, sure. But there might be stuff we are not aware of. One thing that's certain though, is that Disney isn't looking to disrupt the relationship they have with S-E right now, so they're probably not considering that. As long as the relationship is a happy one, they won't burn bridges.

I would say the franchise is perhaps the epitome of two juggernauts working together in extreme efficiency. Something the industry lacks with all kinds of deals going on only to screw up the other party.

Oh wow, it really coming to Steam. It's on Steam right now. I just bought Final Fantasy IV on Steam yesterday. And now just today I was using Steam and saw Final Fantasy XIII.

I wasn't expecting this so soon. But this is super exciting. I'm going to be buying this right away, too. $15 isn't too expensive. Wow. That's a lot of Final Fantasy games that have been coming to Steam lately. I hope this keeps happening.

I would play it right now, or I mean I would play it on October 9th. But I'm still playing Tales of Xillia 2 and Pokemon Y and Trails in the Sky. But this is so neat and I can't wait to play Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy XIII on Steam.
Final Fantasy IV is my favourite Final Fantasy game. So I'm so so so happy that it's finally on Steam. And Final Fantasy XIII is my least favourite Final Fantasy game, but it has really nice graphics. So I can't wait to try it out on my laptop.

Frozen will be in the next Kingdom Hearts. TRILLIONS of software will be sold.

"LET IT GO" will be a duet with Elsa and Lightning.

Will buy but quite honestly don't see myself playing it at all. I like the series but they can be such a chore.

Will pick up all three XIII titles, as well as FFIV. Seems a perfect time for me to get more into this series.

Keep in mind that FF13 itself is the weakest of the FF games.
The story leaves much to be desired, heck much of the game's lore is unlocked as you play and can be skipped entirely since it's a set of data logs you must read from the game's menu!
To add, they ditch all that lore and build up in FF13-2.

FF13 does have great graphics and a nice battle system though, sadly however the game boils down to battles, battles, battles.

I recommend starting with FF4 though. 7, 8 and 3 are on Steam but the FF games are a new story and cast each game and have their own alterations to the battle system.
So 3 or 4 is a good starting point, but as is, start with 4, and experience a kickass soundtrack.

I bought it and will buy the other two when they come out for 60FPS and 1080P (more so in the case of XIII-2 and LR due to their terrible framerates).
I've played the XIII games to death, and my favourite is XIII-2 followed by Lightning Returns because of gameplay.
Although XIII itself is the least impressive game out of the three, there was something about the chase in XIII's story that kept me going and the Cie'th Stone missions due to their difficulty.

I love XIII-2 but it left me desiring a few things namely the lack of Long Gui and an area like Gran Pulse along with the fact that the combat was easy. And lastly I wanted the story to be based on the lore built upon XIII rather than retconning everything and introducing new lore altogether. LR is just a heck lot more fun to play but it's a very different kind of game altogether.

So this highly improves the chances of getting Type-0 HD, FF 9, FF 10, 12 and XV on PC somwhere along the line.

Whichever title makes in onto Squares streaming service should find it's way over, right?

XIII-2 is supposed to be the best of the 3, right? Is the story somewhat self sufficient?

I want to know why there seems to be no English audio for my territory instead!
Japanese companies really are stupid.

Meanwhile, 2k went out of its way to patch in like 5 languages into the Bioshock Infinite DLC and made them available to everyone via a 5 gig patch. lol

Square released FFIV on Steam a few days ago and it's region locked in Asia. Then today they put up the store page for FFXIII, yet it's not region locked. I'd really like to hear the reasoning for this.

I'm all in! This is one of the things I like showing off the most on the net.

I prefer Hillis too, though I think Maaya did better at LR.

Kagari!!!

BAN HIM!!

I want to know why there seems to be no English audio for my territory instead!

You know what's funny?

If I buy the game on Steam I have English voices

If I buy the game in Humble Store there's, seemingly, no English voices.

SE, what are you doing?

What are the chances Tales of Vesperia ever releases on PC?
Hopefully good now that Namco Bandai are porting lots of Naruto and Pac-Man games. And Square Enix are supporting Steam more than ever before. And Konami, and Capcom, too. And Treasure, and lots of other companies.

Oh my goodness I hope so. That would be a dream come true! I would buy so many copies of any Tales game on Steam. I think I would cry. ;_; And I would be so so so so happy.

Here's what I see on Humble Store:
The following languages are available for this title:

Audio: English
Text: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish

The following Asian languages are supported by the version of this game released for Japan and the rest of Asia.

Subtitles and interface: Japanese, Chinese (traditional), Korean, English
Voiceover: Japanese (English is not supported for this version)
It's evidently two version that might or might not even be entirely cross-compatible in resources. I've heard lipsync was redone in the English version. That might be part of the reason (another part is, obviously, licensing).

So idk. I wish there was a way to buy both. I'd buy both.

In my case...do I get it from GMG (is there an active 25% discount code atm?), or use up my Gaben Dollars and get it from Steam...

- Deleted - Wrong thread.

On-Topic: About to pre-order it. Not just because I would actually like to play it, but to show Square I want mroe FF game son PC.

I read the title as 16 bucks for the trilogy and went crazy. As someone who's never played the 13 series, but knows it's reputation, I don't know if I'll go in now. Maybe wait for a Steam Sale after the whole thing's released?
