Final Fantasy XIII on Steam October 9th, $16; full trilogy by Spring 2015

I read the title as 16 bucks for the trilogy and went crazy. As someone who's never played the 13 series, but knows it's reputation, I don't know if I'll go in now. Maybe wait for a Steam Sale after the whole thing's released?

It would be safe yeah. FF13 and 13-2 combat system is pretty good though, but the story is pretty bad and in FF13, it is just battles, battles, battles.

I cannot tell a lie: I could see myself paying a dollar to take screenshots.

edit: fucking, I'm disgusted at myself for just thinking about buying FFXIII again

Kagari!!!

BAN HIM!!

You know what's funny?

If I buy the game on Steam I have English voices

If I buy the game in Humble Store there's, seemingly, no English voices.

SE, what are you doing?

so if i want japanese audio I can buy it on the humble store instead? (germany here)

That has to be a mistake. The Asian sub is heavily region-locked, so if Squeenix were selling that and only that on Humble there'd be a litany of refund requests from those unable to even install the game.

I'm always amazed when people say the battle system is good... It mostly plays itself aside from you switching paradigms (which is painful in 13 since you have to watch as the camera pans to each character while they do a pose before you can do anything else, but the enemy can still attack you).

13-2 improves combat by removing the overdrawn paradigm shift poses so at least you aren't punished by shifting to a stance that is useful more than once or twice in a battle.

Since I didn't bother with it when it was released on PS3, I'll probably pick up FFXIII-2 once it releases on PC. I already know what happens more or less from having played Lightning Returns and reading up a bit on it but eh, heard the combat was pretty good in that one so that's fine. Plus supporting this might get them to port more stuff. Like a remake of FF6. Which I guess they'd need to make first before they release it on PC since iirc the only thing they did was the Anthology thing with some CG cutscenes and terrible loading times.

Yoshichan, it sounds like you're a really big fan of Final Fantasy XIII. Or is it that you're joking?

What is it that you like so much about Final Fantasy XIII? I think your positivity is neat, by the way.

I totally need to go back to XIII at some point because I don't remember huge delays between paradigm shifts. I explicitly remember switching to, say, buff/heal paradigms for a single beat before switching back, which would have been a huge pain in the ass if there was an animation delay ala X-2. Maybe there was an option to turn it off?

No. It gives you a steam key and steam versions are region-segregated.
If somebody could find a reliable way to buy asian versions that'd be appreciated.

There is a delay the first time you swap to a given paradigm in the fight, and then it goes away. It wasn't a long animation though, no where near as long as the ones in X-2.

I'm conflicted on hand i really would like to replay it on the PC but on the other hand Vanille..

If someone comes up with a way to change the audio to Japanese I'll buy it in a heartbeat.

I love it, buffing and debuffing were never as useful as they were in XIII imo (at least for the main quest), and switching paradigms is a very neat active twist to the battle that adds a lot of depth. Getting instant full ATB meters by switching makes fights a lot more fun, and it makes it so you have to think about your paradigms beyond the obvious "the classes I need". Depending on your team, it could be worth having redundant paradigms just so you can keep using the ATB refill thing.

I must really be the only person who likes Vanille >_<

I thought Vanille and Sazh were the best characters in the game. I like Fang too (my favorite, actually), but I guess it's more because of her voice and design than the actual character.

It's been a while though, maybe replaying on PC I'll hate Vanille as much as everyone else.

Just want to make it clear:

IF YOU'RE IN ASIA you will have Japanese Audio and English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean subs.

IF YOU'RE OUTSIDE OF ASIA you will have English Audio with EFIGS subs.

That rule applied for all stores, as they all sell steamkeys anyway. It's the same game. Same rules apply. If you're outside of Asia, you cannot have Japanese Audio.

How could anyone hate Vanille?

About the audio, even if it's not available officialy it will be pretty easy to be modded soon after the release, correct?

Hard to tell. It might be pretty difficult if what people say about asian and English versions having different lipsync and FMVs is true. If only there was an easy way to buy the asian version though, it has English text option anyway.

I rank FFXIII-2 the best RPG (not counting Demon's Souls) and my fourth favorite game of last gen. While the budget for the game obviously wasn't as high as with XIII, the story, music and character development was there (unlike in XIII).

My pros and cons:

Pros:
Final Fantasy XIII
Battle system is the best in the series. People are saying you spend 50% of the game pressing X. Well, in FFVII (my favorite game of all time), I spend 90% of the game holding down O. I love how it's fluid as well, switching paradigm mid-battle was a great mechanic (despite the "switch-animation" taking a few seconds longer than it should, but that was fixed in XIII-2).

The difficulty. You simply can not beat the game by pressing or holding down the same button - everyone saying this is straight up lying. It's fully possible to do this if you're overleveled in any FF-game but in XIII, it's not possible. You need to RAV/RAV/RAV to reach break status. Also, SABing your enemies and SYNing your party is almost essential in order to defeat certain bosses. Again, in FFVII, I only barrier'd up on Emerald Weapon. That's it. People saying the game is too easy needs to remember that FF-games aren't hard in general, but this one at least requires you to (from time to time) do some fancy work.

The music is straight up amazing. Hamauzus work especially.

The graphics is, to this date, top notch.

End-game content. The hunts, specifically, was thrilling, rewarding and FUN!

Cons:
Characters. They're bad. I didn't care for anything besides Sazh, his kid, Snow (yes, I cared for him) and Serah.

Linearity. Yeah, yeah. We already know about this. No game should have a 15 hour tutorial.

Pros:
Final Fantasy XIII-2
Characters. Noel, Serah, Caius, Yeul, Mog and a mature Hope. All that is required in order to create a great, GREAT story-line bond. Caius is (not counting Sephiroth) my favorite FF villain for multiple reasons, five of them being his main theme, the final battle design, his voice actor (Illidan from World of Warcraft!!), his dialogue and his connection with Noel.

Side-quests everywhere. Unlike XIII, this sucker opens up from the start. I loved the sidequests so much, I 100%'d the game twice.

Min-maxing the "sphere grid". Some people may not know this, but you can actually min-max the amount of STR/MAG you get by activating the nodes in specific orders.

I was sceptical to the music at first because it seemed to be too cluttery. Turns out, it became my favorite OST of last gen. I fell in love with music that transitioned from a "world-map"-beat to a "battle"-beat (for example Eclipse and Eclipse: Aggressive Mix): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N34D-dww6wA

Cons:
Graphics sucked :( Art direction is amazing but the framerate was bad and the texture detail is lacking as hell.

Difficulty was lowered heavily from FFXIII which sucks :(. Wish the game was harder. Even the optional bosses were extremely easy.

And that's pretty much the only negative thing I can say about XIII-2. One of the best experiences of all time.

I'll refrain from saying anything about Lightning Returns. I liked it because of the raw gameplay but I was extremely disappointed by a lot of things.

I hope this post answered some questions.

edit: TLDR: FFXIII-2 >>>>>> FFXIII >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> LR

I like Vanille.
99% because of her accent in the English version.

Not the accent that's the problem, but with the overall voice directing. Comparing FF12 to FF13, that's the biggest difference. Well that and FF13's plot sounds ridiculous.

I rank FFXIII-2 the best RPG (not counting Demon's Souls) and my fourth favorite game of last gen.

For reference... How many RPGs you played last gen? Are you counting portables?

I hear that LR isn't so bad if you play it on easy. any thoughts on that? is that game enjoyable in any way, even doing this?

Asia gets English subs, too.

I absolutely do not recommend playing on Easy. The whole point of that game is to utilize every minute you've got in order to do as much stuff as possible (before the big bad meteor hits the planet). By playing it on easy, you're essentially avoiding most of the games' intended balance.

IIRC the timelimit isnt really an issue once you learn how it works and then you can kinda "cheat" it.

I got some enjoyment out of it, the gameplay is fine, it's the timer and knowing which chapters to do first which makes it messy. The timer becomes a non-issue even on normal after the first few days, but you can still spam chronostasis anyway. The open world is miles better than XIII-2 though(imo), it's a real open world, not just levels shoved together by a level selection screen.

I'm sorry, but just, no. :P

I'd put XIII-2 at the bottom personally. Noel, Caius and the girl couldn't save the mess of a story(Not that LR is any better in that respect), the stupid open world structure they decided on, and the general copy-pasted assets. LR at least had completely new areas, as low quality as some of the assets were.

Mind anyone sums up why LR is so bad? Is it the gameplay, the story?

The story is abysmal, yes. It's very low budgeted too, some of the textures genuinely look like they came out of a PS2 game. The time limit would probably put a lot of people off too since it's really harsh for the first day.

I think it's ok if you can look over those faults personally. It's not for everyone though.

Do you all think the DLC will become available for the PC versions too? I want to rock FF13-2 in the mass effect outfits and play against the extra bosses like Ultros. :)

For reference... How many RPGs you played last gen? Are you counting portables?
Not many, and barely any handhelds - there are a few iOS-titles in there though. Following my list (might've missed a few titles): the bold titles are the ones that I really enjoyed.
Elder Scrolls IV/V, Folklore, Eternal Sonata, Crisis Core, Fallout 3, New Vegas, Demon's Souls, Dark Souls 1/2, Dragon Age 1/2, White Knight Chronicles, FFXIII/XIII-2/LR, Resonance of Fate, Mass Effect 1/2/3, Torchlight 2, Diablo 3/RoS, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, The Witcher 2, Catherine (?), Deus Ex: HR (?), The Last Story, Ys Origin, Bastion, Path of Exile, Chaos Rings 1/2, FFX HD (don't think Remasters count though).

Mind anyone sums up why LR is so bad? Is it the gameplay, the story?

Horrid music (compared to XIII and -2), graphics and storyline. Gameplay is fantastic.

Hopefully good now that Namco Bandai are porting lots of Naruto and Pac-Man games. And Square Enix are supporting Steam more than ever before. And Konami, and Capcom, too. And Treasure, and lots of other companies.

Oh my goodness I hope so. That would be a dream come true! I would buy so many copies of any Tales game on Steam. I think I would cry. ;_; And I would be so so so so happy.

Are you me

thingy stuff
Well, thank you for sharing.

I think that the story and the characters are a little bit underrated. And while I don't like the games as much as you do. I think it's nice that some people here aren't negative about the game.

I liked the music, too. Squaresoft and Enix and Square Enix have had a lot of good composers. I like Masashi Hamauzu's work on Dirge of Cerberus, too.

I didn't really like the combat. But we have different opinions and that's okay. The music and the graphics were nice at least. And while it didn't have one of my favourite stories, I think it's underrated.

Thank you again for sharing.

It's not a mistake, the image is just cut off. Here's the full thing:

The following languages are available for this title:

Audio: English
Text: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish

The following Asian languages are supported by the version of this game released for Japan and the rest of Asia.

Subtitles and interface: Japanese, Chinese (traditional), Korean, English
Voiceover: Japanese (English is not supported for this version)

Basically the same thing as the Steam page but with more clarification. Humble also detects your region on the store before selling you anything.

Listen to Yoshi. DO NOT PLAY LR ON EASY.

When you first play it, the time limit can feel overwhelming but that will pass.
The point is to manage time and do good in battle in order to stop time(temporarily) to do more.
