It's a good game but I think I'm one of the (very) few people who preferred the original release.

Obviously this is more enjoyable for more people though so the success is deserved.

Nothing beats the effectiveness of mouse over macros for healers.

Plays well with a controller though and I prefer it just for comfort. KB/M is still better performance-wise though. You can heal whatever target you want really quickly. With a controller, you have to press up/down on the D-Pad to scroll through the party list.

While I can't disagree more on my side, I feel your opinion is as valid as mine. Fact is, this game gives you the choice!

what what

Game plays ok with a controller but kb/m is where the real goodness is

And I play on both pc and ps3

Peace! I'm not the only one to say that. A very good friend of mine is a big healer HL on Phoenix (was legacy on Ragnarok before) and has switched for a 360 pad because it's better. He broke Titan EX and everything he could before 2.1. So even if your opinion differs a little, his way shouldn't be any less valid.

I feel more in control of my character's movements with a controller but yeah button spamming skills is easier on a kb/m.

I'll take the 5% dps loss for comfort though.

I'm not sure what there is to disagree with.

Say you're in a Full Party.
Say you have to heal the person third from the bottom of the party list.

I can literally put my mouse cursor over them and press 1.

How do you do it on a controller? The quickest way to reach them is to scroll backwards so:
Up (targets yourself) > Up > Up > Up
Then
Hold R2
Then
Press O

Now imagine doing this repeatedly compared to moving your mouse a few centimeters and pressing 1.

You may prefer to play with a controller (and I do too) but it is fact that it is not as effective as KB/M, especially with mouse over macros.

Though, yes, you totally have a choice. There is no content in the game you can't do with a controller.

How does this compare to FF XI?

Completely different. It's closer to WoW than FFXI.

So you don't really know I fear. There is targeting (as a healer you target the tank) and sub-targetting if needed, 99% of the time you'll honly have to press one button (while not releasing your trigger)...

Then, you should arrange your party before doing anything.

You heal more than just the tank. There is a lot of group damage in this game, especially because it has such a dodge-heavy encounter design philosophy. We're talking about end game content, yes?

Yes, you can "lock" target on a single person. But to heal other people, you're still scrolling through the list by pressing up/down multiple times to reach them.

Do you play a Scholar? Eos may be enough to take care of people standing next to you on lower tier content if you have her on AI controlled settings I guess.

I'm thinking about picking this up at some point, it looks great!

I played the beta last year and enjoyed it well enough.

And it's much faster than with a mouse. Pressing repetitively a button on a pad is some of the fastest thing I can do in life, lol. Even if it makes me remember some Track&Field pain! :D

Seriously, don't wanted to launch an argument and I think we are both right. We do agree controller is fine, that is answering the original question.

Thinking of getting this on PS4, worth it? I've played WoW and TOR before. How does it play on console?

Plays great on console. I would say there is a learning curve to the UI in general but once you play for a couple hours you'll get the hang of it.

I'm actually having a lot of fun with the game on PS4. Once I got the controls and the giant HUD adjusted, it's been a good overall experience. I love that there's a main quest instead of everything just feeling like a side quest. There is a lot of pointless fetch quest so far (level 11) but meh, I can live with it.

Is it still impossible to log on during peak times? That was the biggest headache during the beta they held on PS3 last year. I'd want to play on Friday or Saturday nights only to find that everyone else had the same idea.

Does the final game on PS3 or PS4 support voice chat in any way or form?

Damn, that's awesome. I played a bit when the PS3 version launched and have resubscribed for the PS4 launch and I absolutely love it. First game in a long time that I look forward to playing all day after getting all my real life crap done.

Great game and I highly recommend people on the fence to jump in. The GAF guild on Ultros is friendly and always willing to help.

Says 1.8 in the trailer on the PS4 store. 200k jump at PS4 launch?

That'd be correct, so at least a 200k jump, probably a fair bit more (but, most of those people aren't gonna be paying subs yet).

I imagine a lot of PS4 buyers are upgrading from PS3 anyway.

I'm on Excalibur, probably the second-most crowded server on the NA clusters, and I've had a queue maybe once or twice since the launch rush. The other night I tried to log in on a Friday night, and there was a queue of 4.

I donated 6 months of my life to this game...more if you count the beta periods for ARR. I begrudgingly put it down in favor a wider array of games at my disposal. Addictive personality, I suppose. Extremely enjoyed my time with it, though I expected it to have over a million concurrent players around now. Still, these numbers are good, right? Congrats to SE. A well deserved triumph.

Have they fixed the leveling of alts? I remember when the game launched, after you've leveled a character, you couldn't repeat low level quests. This made leveling an alternate class very painful.

Deserves it. I put a solid 2-3 months into the game which is more than any other FF game in the series (I hated 13).

At what point does Microsoft start to budge on their "no crossplay allowed" policy so that they can get some money from games like this one?

That's what FATE groups are for.

You can get to level 50 in an alternate class in a week or so of semi-casual play.

Its been a great recovery for them, from the utter disaster V1.0 was, with 500k daily users, you gotta think subs are in the region of 600k, which after 8 months on the market in this day and F2P age (outside of WoW's circa 3-4million) is great, compare that to TOR who after 8 months on the market was below that and sinking further.

It would be really interesting to see how much SE dumped into saving this and compare that with how much EA put into TOR and to see if either of them has clawed back their investments yet.

will be doubly interesting in seeing how TESO compares in the coming months.

This the best FF in years ever since 12. The XIII series was botched, but this game is amazing.

What officially sold me on FF14 in terms of story and feel was the level 20 questline
leading up to the Ifrit battle.
To me that was "this shit just got real" moment.

14 is better than anything I've played of he 13 saga.

Say what you will about Wada but ressurecting FF XIV was one of his best moves yet. Now the last installment in mainline FF series is actually a good game and not at all as divisive as 13. In fact it's a good jumping off point for the brand to come back from the damage 13 saga did.

I haven't had trouble logging in since launch.

No voice chat that I know of.

More comfortable but I don't know if faster.
If you have to heal people in positions:
1 > 2 > 5 > 5 > 4 > 7 > 1 > 2 > 2 > 2 > 8 > 8 > 4 > 2 > 1
Just imagine how many up/downs you have to press to target those people.
Mouse over doesn't need that. Just nudge your cursor a little and press 1 (or whatever key you have heal assigned to).
This isn't even considering that you can't change friendly targets while holding down R2/L2 so you have to release and hold for each one.

But anyway. Yes. Controller is fine but you should understand what you're getting into as a healer. It can be done though and you'll still be effective (just you're going to be working way harder). I'm a healer and I played mostly on controller and none of the content was so hard that I needed to switch to KB/M.
DPS is better on controller I would say because of the ease of movement and you don't have to change targets that much so you can even set the cross hotbar to toggle instead of hold.
Not sure about tank since I never played one.

No.
You'll have to grind FATEs and Duty Finder.

In the mid 40's, there are daily quests. But you only get 6 a day.

I'd have to say I'm really impressed with how they brought a PC-centric interface to the PS4 version, it's powerful and configurable and makes the most of whatever combination of peripherals you want to use. This really is how to do cross platform UIs, don't dumb it down.

I know it's an MMO but the game just came out on PS4...can we not have story spoilers for those of us who haven't really gotten far in the game?

Sorry if I'm nitpicking, but I'm just sayin...

I'm one of those numbers, happily.
FFXIV is great because it feels like a Final Fantasy and not just an MMORPG with the FF branding.
Even the fetch quests and whatnot are treated with care, the writing is excellent.
