Not sure if this is posted: Famitsu has its own Q&A session posted. There is a translation up on ZAM's forum, can't vouch of the accuracy though so maybe someone here will want to take a crack at it.

・At this moment, 40-50% completion.

・The graphic quality will be tune up even more. You can see each tree very clearly even they are very far away.

・macro feature will be added.

・UI layout can be movable by players themselves.

・The smile Icon is emote function.

・Those icons below the screen are called action command.

・You can set abilities that you had on those action command.

・Once you select the command, it will show on one of the 2 gauge in the middle of your screen. Each gauge represent left and right hand.
For example, your left hand equipped with a shield, so those shield related command will be appeared on the left hand gauge.

・When the action gauge reached, the command that you set, will be cast.

・There will be a power gauge too, the more it gains, the higher your accuracy and skill power will be.

・TP gauge will effect what kind of skill you can cast too. So gaining TP will be also very important during battle.

・TP will be gained by getting hit, or hit the monster.

・The action command will be change depends on your weapon. If you put on rod or staff , it will be magic related action.

・Action command will only have 10 slots. You are able to customize those.

・The bag mark icon is item bag.

・Players are not be allow to use emote during battle.

・3 kind of camera style : 3 person view, should view, and first person view.

・Players are able to pull up their weapon even not in engage mode.

・Quest mob location will be show on your map.

・Those puks wont be appear before you finished the dodo.

・There will be a development version before beta test. The image will be like a focus group thing.

40-50% done? They still have a ways to go then...

Seeing those gameplay videos do nothing for me... as a person that quit FF11 with a bad taste in my mouth, those videos have actively made me less interested in picking it up. It just looks exactly the same to me.

That was actually my impression. Which isn't altogether bad, as I enjoyed XI here and there, but I was anticipating a bit more advancement in the system.

Well, there are tweaks to the system of course. However, I had hoped for the same. Then again, it's almost the exact same team so I knew they wouldn't deviate too much from FFXI's base. We'll see I guess.

Yeah, movable UI, different camera views, and beefed up graphics is kinda what we were clamoring for in an update to FFXI.

I'd like to know more about their plans for auction houses, the economy, how they plan on fighting RMT, how they plan on handling HNMs and gear drops, and if they will have built in voice chat. What about monthly fees?

The reason I quit FFXI was the immense time committment. Was in the middle of camping a king when I just flipped out and said I couldn't take it any longer. Wasting hours of my lift to get a piece of gear that may or may not drop, and then hope that I win the lot? Fuck that.

I like the idea that main hand and off hand weapons have different skills.

Seems there is a lot of depth to the class system also.

This is every MMO out there more of less, don't expect that to change significantly.

And if they intend to only sell this game to people who played XI, that would be fine - but it feels antiquated at this point and a bit lazy not to evolve the controls a touch more beyond what are mostly cosmetic changes.

The more jobs/weapons they introduce, the higher tha chance of a OP class there will be. <shrugs> It shouldn't matter in a strictly pve mmo really but people get attached to their jobs and on it goes. Seriously though, SE really skewed shit badly later in FFXI's life.

I think it is a lot more than job attachment. Having an loljob makes a significant difference in being invited to end game events, in who got priority on the item drops, and in everything down to the smallest things like a simple xp party.

You could desert years worth of work to switch jobs, but takes a lot of investment to even get it acceptable and may not even be a fun job to you.

I agree it sounds very interesting and since there are 10 action slots I think its safe to assume 5 for each hand, however I wonder how the action slots will work with a two handed weapon (ie) staff (for magic)?

Thinking more about the main hand and off hand stuff, does that mean dual wield will beable to solo skillchain :).. ie knife and sword combo.

Perhaps a combination of mace and shield = paladin ?

I think its great that a shield could have actual skills that anyone could use (ie Shield bash) instead of just PLD in FFXI. Would you have enough TP to be able to solo skill chain even with two different weapons equipped is the question though.

Yeah, there's all that too. Especially if you got caught up in the HNMLS bullshit. <shrugs> anyways, who knows. Just happy to see Monk there. Hopefully they made adjustments to the job and animations for it.

Maybe because Famitsu got special privileges, but the Japanese Q&A is vastly different from the others, definitely more organized and informative. No one else seemed to bother to ask more about what the playable demo entailed, especially the different parts of the new UI. The newer translation in ZAM's forum is a very good read, and I'm a lot more excited about the new battle system now.

That's because barely anyone in the US press gives a shit about FF Online in either of its forms and are merely paying lip service.

Could you post this here. My work blocks ZAM :(

Those Japanese "40-50% complete" numbers are always crap, so I wouldn't give them much heed.

Those usually mean that 40-50% of the content is "final," but the remaining 50-60% could be anywhere from not made at all to almost final.

On the Gamescon floor, we decided to schedule in an interview with the Producer of Final Fantasy XIV (which will be called FFXIV from here on) Tanaka Hiromichi and FFXIV’s global onkine producer Sage Sundi. We’ll report the interview with Tanaka Hiromichi. Since we’ll report on the interview with Sage Sundi at a later time, please look forward to that as well!

Through the adventurer guild in Eorzoa, guildleves are passes that are issued to visiting adventurers for work. If you achieve the requested job, you can receive various rewards. This is similar to quests that you often see in offline RPGs. The big difference is that you are able to cooperate with and help out fellow players. Being able to play alone or with a large group, the epitome of MMORPGs is packed in.

Tanaka: Just as the title of the leave suggests, you should defeat the puks, but first there are no puks present. You defeat Dodos and trick the puks into appearing.

Even elements such as solving riddles have been prepared. However, as it is a very large field, will you search for the target monster yourself?

Tanaka: Because the positions of the enemies are displayed on the map during a guildleve, it becomes a matter of searching those areas. However, as this time it is an alpha version, they are not displayed.

Tanaka: Because it is still in development, the current version still has rough spots. In this version, the background is rather simply displayed, but in the final version, each tree will be displayed one by one to an extremely far distance.

Tanaka: In “FFXI”, when you selected the “Attack” command, we used an auto attack system that would attack automatically. However, in “FFXIV” it is essential that you select the command every time.

Tanaka: That’s right. They are called “Action Commands”. This interface, too, is still tentative. This is again a comparison to “FFXI”, but a characteristic of this game is that you are able to draw out your weapon at any time. It’s not like drawing out your weapon for a fight in “FFXI”, but you can draw your weapon even in places with no enemies and run around.

Tanaka: The ones lined up in a row below are the abilities in the current set. From these you choose the ability, which is registered in the gauge above as a command. In this game there are two gauges. You interact with the right and left hand. For example, because I hold my shield in my left hand, the commands related to the shield are registered on the left hand side.
(TN: I’m not sure if this means you can the shield in your right hand too. Just that he is currently holding it in his left hand.)

Tanaka: When the gauge called the “Action Gauge” fills up, you can activate it. Moreover, there is also one called the “Power Gauge”, and by accumulating power, you influence your hits and the power of your skills. Again, on the bottom right of the screen is a gauge called “TP”, and depending on the condition (TN: amount?) of this accumulated TP, the skills you can activate change. That is why it is important to act toward accumulating TP during battles.

――敵に攻撃をしたり、逆に攻撃を受けたりすると溜まっていくと。
You’re saying that you accumulate TP from attacking enemies and conversely taking attacks from enemies?

田中　そうですね。

Red Lotus Blade was one of the special skills introduced in “FFXI”. It was deemed the pet name “Lettuce” among the users.

Those Japanese "40-50% complete" numbers are always crap, so I wouldn't give them much heed.

Those usually mean that 40-50% of the content is "final," but the remaining 50-60% could be anywhere from not made at all to almost final.

I would guess 80% = Beta, so hopefully 3-4 months.

A bit more on the demo gameplay, had to split the message up because it was too long.

――魔法なども、このアクションコマンドから選んでいくのでしょうか？
Do you also choose magic etc. from these action commands?

田中　そうです。現在の武器（スキル）によってアクションコマンドの中身が変わります。たとえば、いま剣

Tanaka: That’s right. Depending on the present weapon (skills) the contents of the action commands change. For example, now I’m holding a sword, but if I were to change to a staff it would change to a variety of commands for a mage.

――習得したスキルも、そのアクションコマンドに並んでいくわけですね。
So that means that acquired skills will also line up in the action commands?

田中　そうなります。武器のスキルが上がらないと習得できない技もありますから。
Tanaka: That would be the case. There are skills that you can’t acquire if your weapon’s skill doesn’t go up.

――このアクションコマンドは、最終的にはものすごい数が並んだりするのですか？
In the end will you have an amazing amount of skills lined up in the Action Command?

田中　アクションコマンドにセットできるアビリティは10個までです。どの10個をセットするかを自分でカス

Tanaka: You have up to 10 abilities that you can set in the Action Command. It means you will customize which 10 skills you will use in the set.

――それがプレイスタイルに合わせて、ということなのですね。
It’s something like matching the action command to your own play style, right?

田中　そうですね。
Tanaka: That’s right.

Tanaka: First of all, we wanted to construct a more proactive battle than an auto-battle. More than that, the reasoning was that we wanted to increase the strategy by having you choose your own commands. In order to clearly give defined roles based on ones job, “FFXI” has a premise of having a certain amount of party play. With “FFXIV” you can play alone, or have fun in small groups of two or three. Depending on those situations, you can choose how to share roles.

Tanaka: That is an emote. In “FFXI” you performed emotes via text commands, but with “FFXIV” you can choose it with a graphical user interface. The bag mark next to it selects your items.

This is a question regarding the interface. Since the resolution of future generation machines has been raised, it’s easy to properly distribute chat and statuses etc. and see information. For example, where will party members’ statuses etc. be displayed?

Tanaka: Since this is only an alpha version, I don’t know how it will turn out after this, but it is a shoulder camera from over the shoulder; a so-called normal third person view. You’ll be able to change it to 3 different views.

Tanaka: Being able to use the warp is for when you clear the guildleve. It’s necessary to actually travel to the various destinations on your adventure. You’ll probably reflect on it as a convenient method of transportation, but it’s not something you can use at anytime. (TN: Not too sure about that last sentence. But basically you only warp after the guildleve, you need to physically travel to the spot it seems.)

Thank you so much for explaining the game system. Now, we will ask about the condition of the current display and the development from here on out. It was a sensational announcement at June’s E3, but we were rather surprised that less than 3 months later that it’s already playable.

Tanaka: We’re coming from the development side, but since we’ve been working one thing or another for 3 or 4 years, it feels more like “finally” to us (laugh). Concerning this version of “FFXIV”, we had the concept of presenting a certain amount to the public and taking in their opinions from as early of a build as possible.

Is there any information about the server regions ? Will it be like FFXI ? [Japan/Europe/America in the same servers]
/Cross fingers … Loved the auto-translation tool ;D

Sage says they won't split severs by language (or region)... just because they didn't so in XI.

Hell.

Frankly, this was by far the worst thing that happened on FFXI and will end up the biggest reason why I'll avoid XIV. Seriously, I can't think of much merit in it, except that SQEX can reduce the costs. Hell.

o_O This...doesn't sound right.

That works for a game like CoH, but for a XI sequel? Nah. Then again, the game might very well be very different from XI gameplay-wise if they're adopting a CoH-like system.

Man monster design is awesome. Also characters with varied skin tones = Skin color edit?

It does seem you can manually guard in a way, since you have controls for both left and right hand...unless that was a mistranslation. So maybe you can attack as fast as you want?

The gauges say you can't. Just read that part actually.

Whats wrong with that? They dont have to cater to 56kers this time around, and its not like you'll have to super camp things this time around.

EDIT: VA for story missions will be great.

I would guess 80% = Beta, so hopefully 3-4 months.

Nah. It doesn't really relate to the U.S. milestone definitions at all, either... I think it's pretty much just BS. :p

When your game is "beta," it means that the only things left are bugs. Pulling similarly arbitrary bullshit out of my ass for comparison, I'd say bugs are only like 2-5% of the total development process.

You don't honestly believe this do you? Of course you will. =P

I'm bummed they won't seperate servers either but oh well. The problem came from that the times they reset servers always benefitted one side of the world over the other and they never switched or staggered them. Plus, I'd rather just not have to fuck around when auto translate. >.>

New thread yay! New screens double yay! They look so nice and crisp.

I don't like the fact that they are saying there will only be 3 camera views though.

besides the language barrier if you don't know English or Japanese (though FFXI has Auto-translators for english, japanese, german and french), what is there to hate?

I loved the all-platforms-all-regions-server (also with bigger populations then the usual mmorpg) of FFXI, no matter when you logged in, there is always at least a basic amount of people on your server.
I mostly had german social linkshells, but enjoyed that I could play with people around the world. Much more interesting IMO.

When FF14 hits, gaf can populate the same server that way, too. :D

So, no more auto attack...instead, you have to manually pick attack each time, but have to wait on the gauge the attack to actually carry out... WTF is the difference exactly again? It's like carrying over ATB to the game or something.

Almost everything is wrong. I felt far more comfortable in Vana'diel until Nov, 2003.

Can you elaborate? Its not like you HAVE to communicate with people who have a different language. The only complaint I can think of is that maintenance might be geared towards JP times of day than everywhere else. Other than that, I dont see the problem.

Maybe that is it and monsters wont take that long to kill? Sucks when you get an interview translated, yet the information isnt that...informative :lol

Yeah, this made me do a double-take actually. I was like, "Hey, that's like CoH!" and then I read the gauge part and went, "Um... ?"

I have no idea what they're doing.

I guess on the bright side (dunno if there is a dark side to this) haste will effect more than just casting time and attack delay?

It was simply tiring to live with people with different ethic, common sense, manner, convention or whatnot. I had a sizable number of friends in both JP and NA (along with EU, TW or HK), and really didn't have any racial animosity, but still.

Considering how much JP players write 'JP onry', I don't think I'm in a minority (I heard even NA players have started to say 'NA only' lately.

I like the idea that main hand and off hand weapons have different skills.

Seems there is a lot of depth to the class system also.

This is every MMO out there more of less, don't expect that to change significantly.

True. All the same I may check it out and concentrate more on crafting up front.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Wtf... atb...

I like the cross-region servers, so I'm glad they're still in (even though this was confirmed at E3 so it's nothing new).

The new combat system sounds... interesting. I'm worried about how Tanaka said you'd have to skill up your weapon to unlock specific skills. Does that mean I have to melee as a WHM to unlock Cure 4 or will there be a "spell book" weapon that levels up as I cast spells? Perhaps the staff levels up as I cast spells? I'd be okay with that too. I just don't want to be forced to melee as a mage class.

No SMN job at all right now. Not really digging that, but I get the impression it'll be added in a future expansion so I'm cool if that's the case.

They mentioned the initial game world would be slightly smaller than FFXI's original game world. What were the starting zones in FFXI? I know Bastok, Windy, Sandy, Jeuno and surrounding areas, but what about zones like the Sanctuary of Zi'tah, Beaudeax, etc?

Hmm maybe it was just the server I was on (Midgardsormr), but I never really experienced those problems. I saw maybe one JP bazaar with a nasty comment, but thats about it. Havent seen anything like this at all on Fairy since I restarted back in late April.

EDIT: Im sure staves will lvl up as you cast whatever spells they let you use.
