Final Fantasy XV is about 50-60% complete - Tabata

Mark my words - people will be pissed off about this car. That sense of wonder you've always received from FF adventures? It's been by foot, it's been in old airplanes, it's been in rockets and submarines. But it's never been in a goddamn car - something all of us see and use in our every day lives. There's nothing interesting about riding in a car as a form of travel. It just speaks volumes of the creative minds behind the title - that the main mode of transport has zero creative spirit. It's like, is this GTA? NO! It's FF.

You don't have to USE the car if you don't want to, y'know.

Didn't Final Fantasy VIII have a car as a method of traversing the overworld?

You just explained why I find it interesting, it's seldom used for a FF game, bring in the cars!

They literally said it's gonna act like an airship, and you get 'car fandom' out of it.

Try harder next time.

Actually, no, I got car fandom because they're wasting resources on a driving system in a Final Fantasy game, and because he said this:

The team did look to games like Need for Speed for current-gen references. "We certainly made the driving so it's enjoyable and fun," he said. "The driving replicates the feel of controlling a car, but doesn't go into the nitty-gritty of it. Still, it was designed to feel real. Myself and other members of the staff are very much into cars."

You know, where he says he's a fan of cars and that he's trying to emulate a racing game's system in FF? For a mechanic that is literally a diversion from the actual, you know, game?

Is this Final Fantasy nerd satire? I can't tell anymore.

You know that sense of wonder? It's thanks the world and not the transportation. You also want to know something else. You can walk in this game.

Didn't Final Fantasy VIII have a car as a method of traversing the overworld?
FFVII had that little dune buggy used to travel the sands around Gold Saucer and over shallow rivers.

I think the thing regarding XV's car is, the car's usages is for gamers who want a more streamlined experience(those who don't want to deviate from the story, which is why travel by car is shorter than on foot). Those who want to explore are allowed the choice to go at it on foot. They aren't taking away choices, they are letting the players decide how they want to explore the world. This is NOT a BAD thing!

7 and 8 both have driveable cars, yeah.

I don't think having a car is a problem. I wish it was a less real-world design, though. When in that E3 2013 footage they literally had Tokyo Police Cars I was absolutely gutted (Real Life / FF15 Car) FF8 had a lot of cars, and they ranged from sci-fi to sort of new-age retro cars that looked a bit like cars of the 50s and 60s but not, which I loved. Still. Fantasy based on reality and all that.

There is exactly a 0 percent chance that they're going to let you ignore a driving mechanic they spent any major amount of resources working on. Hell, I half expect the car to have HP and be used in combat by his comment contrasting it to a party member.

... Which might actually be kinda fun, I'll begrudgingly admit. :)

They said you don't have to use the car, it'd just take a while to get to where you want to go.

There could be less real-world design cars. Noctis's car and the tokyo police cars are real world because they derive from Noctis's kingdom which is the place designed after Tokyo and is the closest one to our world. The other kingdoms are said to be more akin to classic final fantasy.

I know you can travel by foot. It's just that if the game is made for a car, then you'll feel stupid traveling by foot. And it'll make the game last unnecessarily long. It's blasphemous just seeing this car being so accessible in this game.

Simple question - how would you react if you saw a car in the latest Elder Scrolls game? Probably vomit right? Yeah same.

Wait, have they said there will not be an airship at all?

Here's the difference with that last statement. You imply that all Final Fantasies take place in the same universe (such as the Elder Scrolls) or that they're all the typical medieval fantasy setting. They're not. They can be whatever they want. In XV's case their thing is "A fantasy based on reality." The main kingdom is the most technically advanced kingdom thanks to it being the only one with last remaining crystal. The other kingdoms are way behind and want this crystal (which is said to be the plot). Since the main kingdom is based off of Tokyo it would make sense the cars from there are also based off something we see in real life. It fits whether you like it or not. XV's world isn't contradicting anything as far as we know.

Wait, have they said there will not be an airship at all?

No they haven't confirmed it or denied it. In the trailer we see airships so they're in the game but we don't know if we can ride it. Back when it was Versus they said we can use them.

I don't get this analogy at all. They're not even remotely the same setting.

They have horses though. That's a living breathing car right there.

The very first thing they said about the game was it's a fantasy based on reality. You do realize one of the main cities in the game is based on a modern day Toyko?

It doesn't make sense in the context of an Elder Scrolls game. It makes sense in FFXV. FFXV revolves around a power struggle between two Kingdoms. These kingdoms are isolated and their tech and culture has evolved independently.

As long as the story provide context, I'm fine with it. Driving offroad in that thing? I'll admit, that's pretty dumb. But the notion of having a car and a road trip motif? That's unique not only in Final Fantasy, but also fairly rare in video games too. I'm a big fan of the idea.

Have you watched the trailer? The car is perfectly acceptable in the universe presented. The correct comparison would be Skyrim horses to a car in FFXV. Both perfectly acceptable, both you can get early in the game, and both are used to mitigate the distance between places of interest.

They were also pretty clear that the driving system won't be very elaborate. So they're simply polishing the experience of what will probably be the main form of transportation (outside of going by foot) in the game, not anything more.

What if I want to explore? What if I'm looking for treasure or monsters? What if I just like walking?

Have you seen the main city? Why is a car out of place, exactly?

I understand that, but I find it funny that people are just now complaining about this.

Ever since the game was revealed, the slogan was "A Fantasy based on reality". And even in the very earliest trailers we saw some normal-looking cars. Nobody said anything back then. But now? Why now? Why did people's expectations of this game's art style changed so suddenly?

I'm not saying this about you, but about that bunch of people ranting about the car's design.

I wonder if 50-60% done accounts for all of the upfront creative and design work. Or are they saying 50-60% of a full playthrough is done. If it's the latter, then in actual terms- relevant to those of us waiting- the percentage would be much higher.

Ever heard of vocal minorities ?
No reason to care really.

I guess I jsut can't explain it. This has nothing to do with what the particular story for FFXV is. This is about what FF means in general. It's pure fantasy. Even when it's tried to relate the most, it's always still maintained fantastical imagery and aesthetic, mixed with steam punk and scifi. FF is anything but mundane. It's anything but what we see outside. It's always been about nostalgia, and tapping into nostalgia through the past or the future. But what FF has never been about is the here and now.

I agree that all of this car business makes sense as far as this story is concerned. Neo tokyo? Okay, yes. But does this 'fantasy based on reality' really have any place in the main game series? Is the franchise called Midway Fantasy, Inspired-by-reaity Fantasy, or is it called Final Fantasy?

So much hate for the car.

It's been one of the things that really caught my attention in the previous trailers, didn't think we would get to use it this freely.

Tabata said they started developing it in from the beginning, and those areas are more complete than the others and that's what the demo will be. He said there won't be much of a wait when the demo is released.

You answered your own question. It's fantasy, it can be about anything.

Should we factor in that FFXV probably has a lot more people and resources going towards it?

We should also factor that Type-0 is an HD remake. Percentages could mean anything. Verendus said it'll be out 13-14 months from now and I
want to
believe him.

Red Dead Redemption was made for horses but still you can do a lot of things on-foot. The car just makes the game world that much bigger since something that takes 4 minutes of driving would take 16 minutes of running. If you played FFXI you have an idea; 20 minutes running to a party in the Valkurm Dunes compared to a quick 6 minute chocobo ride. (characters ran super slow in FFXI)

What's so hard to accept about a car in a modern world?
It's because of the giant monsters?
I literally see the game's aesthetics and think this is what the FFVI's world one thousand year later.

For perspective, Tabata said Type-0 HD is 80% done as of a month or so ago, and that comes out in March.

But Type-0 is an HD remaster, i don't know if we can consider it the same.

FF has never been pure fantasy. What is pure fantasy? You already contradicted yourself by sayings it's mixed with steam punk and scifi. And what FF means to you isn't what it means to everybody else.

You know what's nostalgic for me? The long road trips I took with some of my best friends.

I'm not saying this about you, but about that bunch of people ranting about the car's design.

I, at least, have been ranting about this since at least 2009, as Kagari can testify, as most of it has been over IM to her.

Airships are OK but cars somehow aren't?? I'm not sure I don't understand what the difference is.

Castles that sink below and and can travel is perfectly fine. You better not put a fucking car in my FF, though.

There can be no cars in a world where Leviathan attacks crazy, tecnologically advanced waterfall cities.

And that is a pretty valid complain, don't get me wrong. But if the car's design is such a big turn off, maybe this game won't be for you, since it will be using a lot of modern-day aesthetics.

I wish I could do a bar night with whoever is footing their bill, they seem to be comfortable with picking up epic tabs.

Then again, they can't really cancel Final Fantasy XV can they?
