Final Fantasy XV is about 50-60% complete - Tabata

I understand that, but I find it funny that people are just now complaining about this.

Ever since the game was revealed, the slogan was "A Fantasy based on reality". And even in the very earliest trailers we saw some normal-looking cars. Nobody said anything back then. But now? Why now? Why did people's expectations of this game's art style changed so suddenly?

I'm not saying this about you, but about that bunch of people ranting about the car's design.

EZ - Game was first FF VS. Not mainline FF game. No one cared because it was something experimental that could suck but not ruin take an entire mainline FF away from us.

But now that the experiment has taken an entire mainline FF away from me, I'm obviously going to air my grievance.

At what point does a game cease to actually have a chance of being profitable? Even if you give them the benefit of the doubt that production didn't start until around 2012, someone or somebody was still getting paid to work on the project since 2006. This is like Square-Enix's Duke Nukem. Even if it sells gangbusters, how can they even hope to recover the dev costs that went into this?

Mark my words - people will be pissed off about this car. That sense of wonder you've always received from FF adventures? It's been by foot, it's been in old airplanes, it's been in rockets and submarines. But it's never been in a goddamn car - something all of us see and use in our every day lives. There's nothing interesting about riding in a car as a form of travel. It just speaks volumes of the creative minds behind the title - that the main mode of transport has zero creative spirit. It's like, is this GTA? NO! It's FF.

Ok.
I like the car.

A meltdown over a car in a Final Fantasy game.

Now I've seen everything.

Are you guys really shitting this game because it has cars? COME ON, seriously.

There are different kinds of fantasy, you KNOW? FF has always chosen different kinds of fantasy for different games, both FFVII and FFVIII have elements from our reality, cars, and even sci fi stuff... i don't see what's wrong with this, i really hope this "bashing" to FFXV for the silliest things stops already

If you want a medieval fantasy go play other game, not this FF, period.

And that is a pretty valid complain, don't get me wrong. But if the car's design is such a big turn off, maybe this game won't be for you, since it will be using a lot of modern-day aesthetics.

There was a moment, with the E3 2013 trailer and the Tokyo Police Cars, that the game 'crossed the line' a bit for me on the issue. I was OK with it - I didn't like it, but whatever - because everything was highly stylized takes on real cars, and you can see, through the development, the influence of popular cars seeping in. When the Audi R8 became a major, popular vehicle, the next time we saw Versus the car looked more like an R8, etc. The obvious influence of the Bugatti Veyron, etcetera. I was okay with it, though, as it was a highly stylized take, sort of like the retro classic cars in FF8, which had a lovely stylized edge to them.

As soon as it's an actual real car modeled down to the last detail, I like it a ton less. It's just not FF to me. Is what it is.

I feel similarly about directly modeled buildings, too, really, which FF15 also has - major Tokyo landmark buildings recreated.

Yeah, no. The fact that it is now a main line title is not the reason of the outrage. We've had cars and modern-day technology in main line Final Fantasy games before.

It can't be that bad after the travesty that is called Final Fantasy XIII.
It's not like the reputstion of the series is at stake or something like that, you could almost even say they need to redeem themselves for the XIII trilogy.

I'm sure I'll find plenty about this game to love as somebody who likes FF a whole lot, but that particular aspect leaves me a bit cold. That's fine. Nothing can be everything for everyone. I always knew this would probably be an FF that'd fall lower on my personal list because I'm not huge on post-KH Nomura; having a valid complaint and discussing it doesn't mean one can't get any enjoyment out of or shouldn't play the game. We pedantically debate this stuff because we are fans.

HYES! Someone finally gets it :)

Is simply really - I will hold an online referendum. We will see who wins.

People really complain about the smallest things -_-" car travel has been in since a while ago. Nomura talked about it way backkk...

Having discourse about what you do and don't like and what is and isn't good doesn't qualify as insufferable whining. It's half the joy of being a fucking fan, dissecting things. I mercilessly mock the awful orphanage bullshit in FF8, but I still love that game. FF9 is my favourite game of all time and I could talk about it's shortcomings for hours. The blind stars-in-eyes "FUCK EVERYTHING IS FUCKING AWESOME AND IF YOU DISAGREE YOU'RE A WHINER" side of fandom is, to me, bloody boring and vapid.

If you don't like this new style, that's fine. But it certainly doesn't lend you any credibility to ostensibly admit to producing rants about this game for 5+ years. Don't play it - there certainly isn't a shortage of games coming out over the next 12 months. By contrast, I thought Lightning Returns was a complete abomination but instead of bitching about it for years continually - I just didn't buy it. Too many other good games out there.

"I at least, can justify being an insufferable whiner over a fucking video game since 2009 -- I have the chatlogs to prove it, I swear!"

Better, more considered response:

If all you're going to do is sit, circle jerk and talk about how everything is awesome, there's basically no point. Debate is good. Debate is fun. Final Fantasy is a broad, brilliant enough series that it means different things to different people. That's one of the series' and fanbases' strongest points, in fact.

Endless pessimism sucks, obviously. The endless ragging on Lightning and FF13 when those games did plenty right does my head in. They're not perfect games; so what? Debate is fun, though. I understand if you feel invested in FF15 and feel the moment somebody wants to cast a critical eye there's a need to jump up and defend its honor - FF fans seem to feel that more acutely after FF13. We've all watched Perfo swim against the FF13 tide for years in that sense here on GAF, for instance. I get it. But try to understand criticism and debate isn't always hating.

I'm not a huge fan of when 'fantasy as reality' goes so far that real world stuff begins to show up in earnest. I've felt this way from the very beginning. That doesn't mean I hate this game and it certainly doesn't mean I'm not interested in it; it's just another great bullet point in what Final Fantasy is to me, which in turn informs what my favourite and least favourite entries are.

The suggestion that I was replying to was the suggestion that nobody cared about the realistic vehicles things before. My point, essentially, was that I've always cared about it. It's always been a point of contention about a game I've always been otherwise very excited for. It's something I've discussed with other fans at length. When Kagari would rant at me about Lightning needing to die already, I'd counter about the good things in her games. On the flip, she's always been very pro-Versus/FF15 and in favour of the dark realism in our discussions, so that's been an interesting back-and-forth for years now. I enjoy that. I always have as a fan - because FF is one of those series' where I'm unlikely to skip any entry; I'll give them all a try, at least.

Again, it's nothing against your opinion so much that you think your opinion is so much more credible because you have been complaining for half a decade about it. I'd personally be ashamed to admit that.

I just hope they confirm the motorcycle to see the massive meltdowns around here.

I get it if one says that they don't like the aesthetics or art direction of XV but it becomes annoying when people start using words like blasphemous or disgusting to describe what they don't like. Really? Having a car in FF is disgusting?

And, again, I point you back to re-read what my message was in response to - the idea that it's an issue that has only arisen recently. "Nobody cared before!" All I was saying was, hey, I've always held that opinion. I'm not saying it's any more credible, but I'm saying the idea that people never cared before, or only cared once the game became a main-line FF, simply isn't true. That's all. When I use the word 'rant', y'know, it's not a literal, off the rails, snarling, nostrils flared thing, either. I use that as an evocative word. We've talked about it. How about that?

I don't believe my opinion to be more or less credible than anybody else's. Opinions are assholes, etcetera. I wasn't the one throwing around terms like blasphemous or disgusting to describe the existence of a realistic-looking car; my opinion on it was just "Oh. Well, I don't really like that. It doesn't feel FF to me." - and as I acknowledged, that's been my take for years now.

And especially dumb when people start to bring The Elder Scrolls into this....

Lol at the car salt. How long have they been saying "this is a fantasy based on reality"? Ya'll should count yourselves lucky this game even has swords in it.

No female, no buy is how I roll

Forced uniformity between sex is even more sexist than what you consider sexist.

In the real world you find lots of groups of boys that are friends and no gals are there, why couldn't you be able to find this in a game?

Look how majestic this creatures are!

final-fantasy-xiv-a-realm-reborn.jpg

Why would anyone ride a car with these in existence?!
Look at how much fun they're having.

Well, luckily for you, and everybody who don't like the car, Chocobos (and possibly airship too) are in the game :)

And i'm sure they'll all have their good reason to be used, this should make everyone happy.

That is a good point. But I have a sinking suspicion Nomura was trying to turn this into something a bit far from FF's normal universe and they wanted to reel it back in. Plus it seems like he is way more concerned with KH3 than FFXV.
