Looks like good fun. Many people forget that Star Wars is a lighthearted franchise aimed at families and kids. If you go into a Star Wars movie expecting to see very deep, though provoking and serious Sci-fi that requires brain cells (think Frank Herbet's Dune or Asimov's Foundation) you are bound to only be disappointed.
Nobody wants deep serious sci fi shit in Star Wars. But that's not the problem here..
The problem is that these characters are lame and don't work.

And the story is non-existent
and dumb as hell.

Just give me my fun adventure romp with some space battles without me pulling my hair out because of stupid stuff happening.
Star Wars doesn't need to be Hamlet or Citizen Kane.

I was watching a video last nihgt, leaks are saying that it's being 75% reshot because test screenings said it was horrible. that it goes nowhere. And that's where there is absolutely no story progression shown in the trailer. It's just shit they decided to keep in and around the re-shoots. I wasnt sure but then it mentioned the Sith Knife from the leaks, that you can see in the trailer, so it all seems to be a massive cluster fuck

So you wanna imply with this question that Hamlet and Citizen Kane are fun adventure romps?

Saw the same video.
I actually like the trailer, like I wrote above. But it's hard to care for any of these news characters after TLJ happened.

Mysterious orphan stranded in a desert world Rey is Mary Sue'ish beyond repair and completely uninteresting.
Cool maverick dude Poe has his balls got cut off by some weird old hag in a night gown
Deserting Stormtrooper Finn is of no consequence to the story anyway
Rose is just a nuisance
Kylo was an interesting premise, but they killed him off with that wackyness at the end of TLJ. How will that guy ever not be a loser?
Hux is a one dimensional evil space nazi, that you cannot take serious anymore.

There is 40 years of characters and this is what they did.

Star Wars Episode 7

There is a disturbance in the force... Jedi Master Luke Skywalker has felt a great unease, a feeling long since forgotten. Greatly troubled, Luke calls the Knights of the New Republic to the Jedi temple of Coriscant for council... After much discussion and assisted by his apprentices, Kyle Katarn and Tenel Ka Djo , Luke elects to travel to Degobah to consult with Master Yoda as to where this disturbance emanates...

I know Yoda is dead, but see, how fucking easy that was. You telling me that a professional writer couldn't have done something with that, and not fucked everything up-

took me two seconds to think up, You got luke, and you have two apprentices to pass the torch to the next generation, without having to disrespect and destroy the OT.

Episode 8 Luke could have taken a back seat - you wouldnt have minded because you'd have 2 movies to get to know these new jedi

Episode 9 - The two apprentices are the star of the show - everyone is happy and you pave the way for infinite spin offs with everyone on board.

We all know it's weird how she got to use the Force is... a bit too soon?
I thought it was common knowledge by now that Rey "unlocked" all her powers when she got into Kylo's head and they both got connected by the force making her as strong as Kylo.

Sweet, so all you need is a few midichlorians and a download of Jedi ver. 2.2.5 and you're all set. Fucking sweet.

Using the movie's words, after that scene where Rey resists and uses the "reading minds" trick against Kylo Snoke says "There has been an Awakening". I still hold the theory that Rey was trained and forgot everything of her past because ___________ and that moment helped her to recover her connection with the force.

Have you played KOTOR2? Because that's literally what happens in KOTOR2 and it's considered one of the best Star Wars games ever. (Kreia's connection with the Exile awakening the exile's jedi powers from nowhere).

Not a bad trailer, but a bit worrying that even the final trailer is a bit meh. They really couldnt fashion a trailer that will build hype?, thats worrying for me, especially after the tatters the franchise was left in after dumbass Johnson.
Well all the none mainline Disney films have been the best (yes even Solo), so now the main story is wrapped up, maybe the endless incoming spin offs carry on being decent.
Also they say the main storyline is ended now, but who wants to bet that 'Episode 10' gets greenlit in the future, when Disney have plundered Star Wars so much that all the spin off films start seriously underperforming.

Don't compare the amazing game that is KotoR 2 with the new trilogy. Nothing is bad a priori, it works in the game because the writing is fantastic and unlike any other piece of SW fiction ever.

Holy shit why is this 100 x better than anything we've seen in the ST?!

Sure this wasn't possible in 77 but the choreography and the way that this duel is filmed is so much better than the duel in TFA and whatever the fuck that throne room brawl was supposed to be in TLJ.

What the fuck are you doing Disney.
I think it’s fine that the original fight was like it was. Obi-Wan is, after all, an old man, and that fight was always more about emotion than being a display of badassery.

Vader though... that sheer legitimate menace and fear. That’s everything missing from Disney Wars on the villain side, and in general. The characters and situations making you feel something beyond, ‘I remember this!’.

Reminder that the best Vader we've ever seen in canon is Rogue One Vader.
Very debatable. They mined the OT for a character, and gave him a brief action scene with today’s choreography and production value. So brief, it’d almost be impossible to ruin him. Also one of the few things that actually works in all of Disney Wars.

Let’s look at their actual villains they’ve developed over movies and trilogies. I don’t even remember Rogue One’s or Solo’s. Kylo was a cool idea at first, but has basically become Darth Soyboy.

...Yeah.

Vader was terrifyingly well done, in Rogue One.

Makes me wish Disney would make a sequel, of sorts, where Vader is in the process of hunting down some of the last known Jedi. The crux of the plot would cut between Vader doing that, and a small group of rebels hired to assassinate him, and of course one of the assassins would actually be a secret Jedi.

Vader in Rogue One is ok. i cheered the first couple times i saw it, but it's "the best Vader scene" in the way Yoda's lighstaber battle is "the best Yoda scene". fun action but that's it. it's dumb and makes no sense when you consider his demeanor in A New Hope.

i think there is a reason Lucas didn't make the PT all about Vader just slaughtering tons of people. that was never really his role. he was kind of an underling, who answered to Tarkin as well as the Emperor. he's supposed to be tragic. you aren't really supposed to cheer him on killing people, which is why that sort of thing never happens in the PT. the new guys writing this stuff are clueless.

also that scene, from what i understand the director shot the almost the whole movie and then got a phone call from corporate that they had separately shot the Vader sequence, and director was like "Oh yeah this fits perfectly into my movie!". feel like that scene was literally the studio forcing something into a movie.

Vader was supposed to slaughter all the hidding jedi of the galaxy and had the rebel alliance terrified with his presence. The only reason Vader fought like he did on the OT is because Technology of that age. He was supposed to be a beast and an unstopable tank with a lightsaber.

The Vader depicted in RO is still completely a different entity from the cold and rationally acting one we see in ANH. I really like RO, but that whole Vader fanboy porn bullshit is a shame.

There is 40 years of characters and this is what they did.

You telling me that a professional writer couldn't have done something with that, and not fucked everything up-
Or just look at what Cobra Kai did. They completely nailed bringing old characters back while introducing new ones.
You simply don't shit on the childhood heroes of that generation that made your shitty franchise into what it is now and don't get a backlash.

yeah that's my "point". the fans expect Vader to be portrayed a certain way, while the people making the actual movie chose differently. i'm not arguing that he did or didn't kill people, it's down to the way it is portrayed in the actual movies. not what "should have been". he is not an unstoppable mudering beast that makes everyone cower in fear (look at how Lando's city signed up in Empire). that is kind of a power fantasy people project on him.

when he is killing Jedi students, it is a sad thing, when he is killing Tuscan raiders, it is a sad thing. RO on the contrary was a glorification of killing. he's just slaughtering people, aimlessly, since as soon as ANH starts up, he's letting the troops do the work and coming in with "If this is a diplomatic ship" talk. he switches off his sudden mass murderer mode and is Good Cop all of a sudden.

the new guys just have a problem framing these things. they don't think it through, they just do what looks badass for the scene without any thought. so we are seeing that bite them in the ass right now. Kylo Ren introduced in the first film killing various villagers, then personally overseeing the genocide of an entire system. yeah it's "totally badass" but it also makes it so that when you try to redeem him, nobody is buying it. you look at all the first hand death Vader was involved in across the OT and it is actually very limited by comparison. Vader is shown killing mostly imperial members or Rebels directly involved in the war, whereas Kylo is shown killing civilians as well from the first scene.

i was thinking this, that the trailer gives nothing away. I'm remaining hopeful that they will pull off a good movie because I love starwars and you know they can do it! will probably suck but there is a chance!

I'm into it. Yeah, The Last Jedi was disappointing but I still enjoy The Force Awakens more than any of the recent Disney Star Wars movies. There's hope that TRoS will be at least as entertaining as TFA, given that Abrams is at the helm.

Middling expectations.

Wheres the whimsy? Wheres the fun? The space adventure.

The trailer was highlited by 3P0 dying and Rey crying.

The 2nd movie is supposed to be the dark one and the 3rd one should be uplifting.

Whole thing feels like its going to be all dark and seriouse and a real slog to sit through, just to get to Rey kicking everyones ass again. I guess we can look forward to force ghosts of every character from the past because gotta member amrite.

Oh yeah I def understand why the original duel is that way that it is and have no problem with it. They did their best on a small budget back in 77.

My issue is that a fan edit scene is shot and choreographed way better than any of the duels in these recent multi million dollar movies.

Like c'mon Lucasfilm/Disney, it's embarrassing when fan creations on limited budgets are much better looking than your duels. There's no excuse for this shit.

original duels were great. they were based on real fight coreography. than fan remake is not better, it is trying too hard to be cool.

the ST ones are all flashy trash. disappearing weapons. people taking wide swings and leaving themselves vulnerable. yet the fast pace makes you ignore their true shitiness.

It does look nice, visually. The lightsaber fight in Oceanland may just feel like a rip off of the lightsaber fight in Lavaland from Episode 3, but it sure does look pretty!

On an unrelated note (unrelated to things that are pretty), it looks like they changed Rose's hair. I wonder if it's a way to distance themselves from the abomination that was her character in the last one. Now they can have her act any way they want since she looks different.

It looks like she was doing an oil change. I wonder if that's true unhappiness on her face and she is only in this for contractual obligation? I bet this is her only scene. She seems to have been JarJar-ed. Poor kid, it must be a dream to be in something like Star Wars and then have it turn out to be such a nightmare.

I like the original duels.
As a child my favourite parts were always the duels and space dogfights (both of which have been neglected in the ST in my opinion)

While the fan scene isn't perfect I still think more thought has gone into the choreography than the choreography in the ST duels. That fan edit may be overly flashy at times but it still looks better than the throne room nonsense in TLJ, further highlighting just how embarrassingly bad that throne room scene is.

The forest setting in TFA was a really cool place to set a duel but I still wasn't particularly impressed by the choreography or the way that it was shot. I'm not necessarily looking for flashy twirls or any of that shit, I just want the duels to feel 'real' and to tell a story.

My concern with the duels in the ST is Daisy Ridley as I don't think she looks particularly natural doing anything athletic. Even her run looks kind of dorky. Driver on the other hand has more physical presence and appears to be a bit more athletic so I'm hoping for some cool saber scenes involving him.

I know that there is more to Star Wars than sabers and duels but my expectations for the rest of the film is so low that I'll be happy enough if I at least get some decent duels.

oh yeah and her wild open swings are absurd. she literally looks like a kid just playing "swordfight". i know they are "going for" and "untrained" look but the result of that is... well... an untrained look...

IMO they should have gone with staff fighting, she was convincing at that. contrary to a lot of misinformation, fighting with a staff is totally different than fighting with a sword. she pulled off the former but not so much w a sword. they could have given her a double sided saber for that. but no, it has to be EXACTLY like the OT.

Thanks for the gif, perfectly highlights my beef. That shit looks ridiculous.

Completely agree re the staff as well. A double sided saber would have been really cool to see on screen again and would have probably been better suited to Ridley.

At least she's hopefully done after this.
Nothing against the actress personally but her poorly written character, mediocre acting and physical limitations have been a huge detriment to this trilogy so far.

a cave outside of Whoville.
And people say Rey is perfect at everything right away...look at her swing that sword even worse than the kid no one would pick to be on their team in middle school. Hell, she kinda looks like she would still fit in in middle school.

I disagree. I don't honestly understand what people think is wrong with it. I hear lots of people say it's fan service and put it down.

In my opinion, that should have been basically the whole movie. Vader should have systematically killed every main character in the movie one by one and hunted them down. It should have felt like Terminator 1, with a slow, unstoppable killer tracking people down and efficiently destroying them. This is how the Empire got so much control. If anyone was actually putting up a real fight, Vader could show up and scare the shit out of everyone and kill until they run away.

I really enjoyed that scene, it conveyed the terrifying nature of Vader. In fact he was one of the best parts of that movie, he was great whenever he showed up.

However, there are still plenty of better Vader scenes in my opinion. His showdown with Luke Skywalker in Empire. Him hunting down Luke in the darkness in Jedi. Man there's so many.

Looks like good fun. Many people forget that Star Wars is a lighthearted franchise aimed at families and kids. I don't expect serious sci fi. I just expect to know what these characters are all fighting about. They all look so serious and shit's about to go down but after two movies I still have no idea why...?

There's no why to this trilogy. It's just there. There's no reason for it to exist, because neither Johnson or JJ have given me anything to know about these characters.

Rey says something among those lines in the trailer. About people not really knowing her. Well, THAT is my problem with this trilogy. Because, in fact, I do not know her. Or Finn. Or Poe. Or anyone for that matter. How can I care for anyone when I am given absolutely nothing to actually care about?

Literally no one forgets this. People just LOVE bringing it up as a counter-argument to any legitimate criticism and it's so tiiiiiring and telling of the person saying it. Blinded fanboyism?

Can't wait to slip this into my kids usual line up of PooYoo and Telletubies
