Advance Wars did the same thing too, but neither series has done it since.Sounds a bit like Fire Emblem 7 when you're a tactician for Lyn, Eliwood, and Hector. I'm okay with this.

Yeah, it's pretty much the best of both worlds. Hardcore fans can just ignore the casual stuff and the open map, while the game is actually accessible to everybody else.So basically for people who aren't super hardcore FE players (or just want to mess around) they can chose casual mode and level up on the random fights.
The series has generally been set up to where you get two games that share a continuity and then they move on to something new. This is either going to be the start of something new or is going to be stand alone like Sacred Stones and Gaiden (though, I think Gaiden did take place on the same world as Shadow Dragon/Mystery of the Emblem). So, this sounds more and more interesting to me. I wasn't 100% on whether I would get this but I've never tried a FE game before and now seems like as good a time as any.
Do plots typically join up between games? Does this one have a plot connection? I could always go out and find an older game to buy, if it does.
I don't like that this has Free Map much at all, hmm.
at most there are pairs of games that are connected. FE3 was a remake and sequel to FE1. FE5 was an interquel during a time skip for FE4. FE7, the first north American Fire Emblem game, was a prequel to FE6 which never came out here. FE9 and FE10 both came out here and directly connected, FE10 being a sequel to FE9. FE11 and 12 are remakes of 1 and 3.So, this sounds more and more interesting to me. This latest one is original and you can come in fresh. There are no tie ins.

Any details on the most important part of the Fire Emblem series in this one? a.k.a. Support Conversation?
Apparently, My Unit has a fixed class that uses both swords and magic.

Apparently its back to normal. Not Radiant Dawn mode.
Or was it my dreams that told me that?
There goes my dreams of making the first(?) girl brigand FE character.
Don't sway my hopes back and forth like that >_<
I am being serious here: the decision to buy this game, and by extension a 3DS as well, will rest solely on whether this game has a decent support conversation system or not. I like the system that much.

You always have that guy from FE6
30 DMG 60% hit LEZZZ GOO xD
I saw that. I was trying to say that we at least had a playable brigand unit in a FE
Or was there other playable brigand units in the SNES FEs?
Im in the same boat as you. Only reason why I let Raidant Dawn slide was the enjoyment of seeing my 3rd tier units mow down everything in their path.
This game probably wont have 3rd tier units nor a mass amount of character units so the original support conservation should return.
Apparently, My Unit has a fixed class that uses both swords and magic.
It's probably just Sacred Stones-esque branching, since that managed to have about 40 classes. If it's true that it has around 40 classes it might have three tiers, or at least branch.

Fair enough - so it would be safe to just start with this game then?
streetsahead might not have gotten ambassador games.Ehhh... I don't want My Unit to be a fixed class... But in any case, Swords/Magic sounds like just the class for me so I'm not as upset.
It should, considering they've recently been trying to make Fire Emblem games as accessible as possible recently. Or, you could try FE7, which is already My First Fire Emblem basically, or FE8 which is already on 3DS and is probably more similar to this new one, but it's generally not as well regarded, though still quite good. Or, track down FE9 Path of Radiance for Gamecube. That's a good primer as well. FE7 is basically Fire Emblem gameplay without any of the fancy stuff they've added throughout the years.
Yeah Sacred Stones is definitely the easiest.
Fake edit: Ohohohoho I just saw the scans of this! They changed the battle-predictor interface again! It's at the bottom of the screen instead of on the side! Now, it does HP subtraction for you (Crom 93% 20 to 20 vs. Enemy 95% 7 to 0), and I can't find Crit rate anywhere! What could that mean? Also, the enemy has a portrait, so he's either recruitable, or a boss, or generic enemies have portraits now! It's a pretty cool portrait, and it seems to reflect that enemy's class - he's a myrmidon, it seems.
Fake edit twice: He IS a generic unit! His name is apparently "Bandit." So perhaps each different enemy class has its own portrait for the pre-battle thing. I mean, we've seen the monsters already.
streetsahead might not have gotten ambassador games.
i think the sacred stones is the most accessible though. lets you replay stages for more exp and acts a little more like other srpgs.
wait there's monsters in this
oh fuck meeeeeeeeeee
at least they're not furries right?
Eh, you guys are making too big a deal out of the magic and sword combo. None of the Mage Knights or Mage Fighters ever had enough strength to make physical damage worthwhile... well, maybe Eyrios.
There's no reason that couldn't change now!

I set it to advanced the first time I ever play Fire Emblem because I thought it would somehow give me more relevant information.lol calculate the stuff yourself
I used to play FE7 with the advanced battle menu because I memorized all the game's battle algorithms

Monsters. Free map. Possibly branching classes. Guys, this is Sacred Stones 2/Gaiden 3.
And that is awesome.
Free map? Ugh, I hate that.Monsters. Free map. Possibly branching classes. Guys, this is Sacred Stones 2/Gaiden 3.

Oooh, more scans. My observations which may or may not be totally accurate:
