Fire Emblem Coming To 3DS

The_Darkest_Red said:
Well in some Fire Emblem games there isn't even an opportunity for grinding, like FE7. The only "grinding" you can do is through battle arenas, and that aspect of the game is extremely minimal compared to grinding in most RPG's.
Those are slightly rigged against you as well. If you're too strong the enemies will start using Silver weapons and in general their stats are matched to your stats, they can even break their respective classes stat caps.

Then there is boss abuse I suppose. But its a total chore (wait about 10 turns for boss to fully heal from near death then spend 2 turns getting about 30 EXP) and really not required.

I think the fact that you have to use something this obscure to find something "grindy" about the FE series pretty remarkably demonstrates just how little grinding there is in the games.

By the way I know that you don't think the games are grindy, I just think you made a good point and you may not have realized it.

I'm really hyped for this already - an entirely new 3DS installment with PoR/RD-esque graphics has been something I've been hoping for for a while now. Hopefully it does cross the pond and we get it fairly soon. Then they can start working on Advance Wars 5.

People who rely on grinding can't strategize to save their life. They're also the same people who doesn't like the random stats up in the games because they can't level up with max stats to plow through the enemies. The games are really designed around strategy and you have to really go out of your way to make Fire Emblem grindy.

I believe FE2 and FE8 are the only ones that allow you to grind your way through them. Some of the Endgame maps in FE10 have nearly infinite reinforcements, but at that point in the game none of your Endgame units should need that much extra EXP. Not even Micaiah with her super-late promotion, since at that point she's relegated to Healer.

crap crap crap :(

i just checked again and having never played an FE game the ONLY one i stand a chance of even finding/being able to afford is Shadow Dragon!!!

Now with people dissing this game left and right, is it even worth getting at ALL or am i better off not playing ANY FE game ever than this one?

I COULD get PoR or the GBA one off Ebay but i'm not about to spend freaking 100 bucks or whatever for a used, possibly ruined copy

Fire Emblem for the GBA is your best bet (known as FE7 outside of the West). It's easier than most of the games in the series but it's still fairly challenging and it has a great story. You should be able to find it for fairly cheap on Ebay. Just buy it from a user with a high feedback percentage and you should be fine. I buy GBA games there all the time.

No no, I meant I just don't enjoy playing through any RPG just for the sake of it, w/o any story or characters to follow along with. I actually beat both PoR and Radiant Dawn on hard, and it wasn't pleasant.
Stupid resurrecting Ashnard! I lost Nasir but fortunately Tibarn and everyone else made it.

If you can get Path of Radiance, personally speaking, I recommend that above all else.

If you can't get anything aside from Shadow Dragon, it's not a bad game, it just doesn't have good art and is a little primitive compared to other FE games.

Buy it from somebody on GAF. Also get PoR it's the superior one.

It's not really bad, it's just... well, bland, but mostly simple by being a remake of a 21 year-old game that is pretty faithful to the original, which means that newer entries have more variety as far as maps, skills, supports and objectives go, but it's still enjoyable and the harder difficulty levels can be very fun. Also, since it's your first game in the series, you probably won't find the same flaws people who played the others do, and if you like it maybe you'll find it easier to buy the rest of them (though I think Sacred Stones is not very rare, at least not 100$ rare).

Oh, fair enough then, importing wouldn't be very wise in that case :P

This is one thing I wish they would change (about most SRPG's as well), grinding is part of RPG's for me and I hate being punished for doing so. If I want to level grind for 3 hours and that makes me kill bosses in 3 hits then they should let me play it that way. Also characters should not be able to permanently die.

anyway how would i do that? is there a thread for that or what? (still junior as you can tell )

You'd be surprised at what has been posted up for sale in the Buy thread.

I have a solution: Don't play Fire Emblem. Permadeath is an FE staple and it will never go away, because it actually forces people who try to just charge through shit not to be so reckless and stupid.

Radiant Dawn is $35 new ($25 used) on Amazon, so that's not incredibly expensive... or you could wait and hope it ends up as a Nintendo Selects title.

Who says grinding has to be part of an SRPG? Grinding takes the S out of SRPG if you ask me.

I didn't know PoR was rare, I have it right here sitting with me, waiting to be played (but I can't play it, because I have to spend hours in Xenoblade =) ). Had to buy a Memory card for this sucker =P

All I am saying is that people should have the option to play a game how they want to. If you can play and beat a game with characters 20 levels lower then someone else good for you. However a game should not be designed with an elitist mindset so that only long term fans would want to buy it, and this is coming from someone who considers Final Fantasy Tactics his second favorite game. I usually don't have much difficulty playing SRPG's that have these rules but that doesn't mean I always like to.

Plus PoR is the superior of the two anyways. So track down PoR it's worth it, then play RD if you want but be prepared because the first half of the game is ass, imo.

You can grind in FE you just usually need to go out of your way to do so through either Boss or arena abuse. Otherwise you don't need to grind because if you're playing the game right by the time you get to the end boss your team should be able to pretty much steamroll through entire stages. Hell even before that, if you train the right people then you can steamroll through almost everybody.

Well, I think that RD is better, but you really need to play PoR first to appreciate the plot. Also, PoR is not quite as challenging, making it better for a beginner. Trust me, RD is not the FE you want to start with.

Intelligent Systems have made plenty of concessions for the less hardcore gamers in the latest games. There are now multiple difficulty levels. You can also create save states on the easier difficulties making permadeath less of an issue.

If you really want to grind, there is still boss abuse, and stuff like that.

I never got around to playing any of the FE games, even though I have POR sitting in my Gamecube collection still factory sealed. (also hooray for me I am finally a member)

I love permadeath because it makes Fire Emblem the one game where moral choices actually matter.

When I play a Disgaea game, all I need is one person to cross the finish line, so I send my whole team after a powerful enemy to deal whatever little damage they can before getting killed, then send my heavy hitter in to sweep up. It's a thoughtless strategy that works.

In FE, that is an absolute last resort, you do that knowing that you are sending a character you've worked hard to build up to their death so the rest of the team can move on. It has so much more impact when it's life or death.

Also, I hope they didn't replace the musicians along with the artist. Tsujiyoko has been consistently amazing. Here's hoping for an awesome recruitment theme.

If you believe that people should have the option to play a game however they want to then where does that mindset end? Why can't someone play Final Fantasy Tactics with invincible characters if it makes the game more fun for them? Why can't someone play an RPG with all of the weapons given to them up front, and all of their characters starting at max level?

The point is, developers design games to be played in a certain way. The boundaries of that design are oftentimes flexible, and sometimes allow for varying degrees of difficulty and play-style. The thing is, the boundaries are set by developers based on what they think creates a better game. Most modern FE games give you a choice in difficulty setting as an attempt to accommodate the kind of desires you're talking about, but implementing grinding to a formula designed around avoiding it goes beyond that to the point of cheapening the gameplay formula. The guys designing FE apparently don't believe that grinding adds anything to a game, and they likely think that it can even detract from it. If you disagree with that philosophy that's one thing, but acting like the game is flawed because you can't grind just strikes me as kind of out there.

Winnie the Pimp said:

Yeah it's best if you play PoR first, but if you're never going to play PoR because it's too expensive, then you might as well start with Radiant Dawn. You'll miss some story details and you probably won't be as attached to returning characters, but it's still completely playable.

But recent Fire Emblem games are designed in a way that by the end of the game, most of your core characters will have reached their maximum levels, so there's really no need for grinding unless you want to level up every single character. (But that's what multiple playthroughs are for)
It looks like Fire Emblem 3DS will allow you to grind though, because of the Sacred Stones-like map system.

I think based on Nintendo's recent track record, their localization plans are quite predictable; that being, unless it has Mario, Zelda or Metroid in the title NoA will not bring it here. I'd love to be wrong, trust me, but Ive lost all faith in Nintendo, especially NoA.

Prove me wrong Nintendo.

Yeah, I agree with the other posters who think that perma death should still be in. That way, it makes the player use actual strategy and gives a good incentive to actually play ahead. Plus, the later FE games allow you to easily see attack ranges (where many SPRGs don't), so you definitely have all the tools available to persevere. Not to mention that the stages themselves are not that long if you mess up (and for the games that have the longest stages, including FE4 and RD, you get mid-battle save options).

Only time I've ever seriously grinded in any FE game was during my 11th playthrough of PoR. I wanted to see if it was possible to level cap every single character (it is)

Oh sure, sometimes I will grind up a specific character's weapon level, but that hardly counts.

PoR is rare? It's sitting in my Wii right now, I've owned it since it launched, and I've never beaten it. Ahahahahaha!

If you want to grind, just abuse the arena in Blazing Sword and Sacred Stones.

I love FE4's maps. They're absolutely gigantic and gorgeous. I wish they had more maps that were in that style.

I dunno. Can you think of any 3DS games Nintendo has refused to bring over?

Tomodachi definitely isn't coming, but as for the rest...I am not sure it is necessarily wise to be comparing the end of a generation with the start of a new one.

FE4 continues to be my favourite in the series. omg. It just did so much right. The maps were fantastic, large and pretty, the narrative was awesome, and the point system + battle system introduced was great. I love that game.

I agree with everyone else in saying that Path of Radiance is superior to Radiant Dawn. If you can snag a copy of PoR, go for it.

I think the process behind NoA's localization process can be summed up as them choosing only to localize two kinds of games.

1) The kind guaranteed to be million sellers.

2) The kind forced upon them by NoJ.

It feels really weird and counterintuitive

I don't know why, but the art style reminds me of Blazblue... Sure, both are anime-styled but... Maybe the shadows.

Great news, anyway. Let's hope it makes its way to Europe!

Sorry. Yuka Tsujiyoko already retired. IIRC Paper Mario 2 was the last game she did the music for. She may have been assistant role of the other games but I really can not remember.

Oh yeah so having watched the videos I'm going to guess what this 2 characters in battle is about. Its basically like attack supports in SRT:OG but given how the Mage had not attacked yet I'm guessing it is much more restricted (can only do if you've not yet attacked). The advantage from that is I guess both units get killing EXP and also they get to both do attacks before the enemy does theirs.

This should make it easier to "baby" weaker units by having then support a stronger unit.

Not to mention comparing a port of a Japanese only game to a completely new game.

Uncommon maybe. I think it goes for $40 or so used in good condition. Can get it for about $30 but it would probably be disc only or something.

Used to be more expensive IIRC, a friend of mine was looking for it and used copies were all like $50+.

The new art style looks really anime-ish. Like shit I would expect in a show not in an FE game. I'm not sure if I like it or not. I definitely don't like the new main chick's design.

She still composes a few songs for every new Fire Emblem I think. Like Koji Kondo for Mario/Zelda games. But yeah she hasn't been the main composer for awhile.

Do both units gain EXP? In one of the clips it seemed that only Chrome gained EXP. Maybe they show the supporting unit's EXP after?
