Firmware Version 2.00 - Official Press Release

We’ve added several other features in this update. I’ll soon be back with more details with a quick video demo of some of the new features.

Please be something of relevance!

It wouldn't be the first time they added features that weren't listed in the press release.

I see nothing to say it isn't a major update. Just because you can't see most of the changes doesn't mean they're not there.

So because they don't say "hey this is a minor update" its a major one? I think we all got our expectations up way too high through rumors and personal want. I mean, maybe if they ever said something about what is coming in 2.00 and then didn't deliver, i could understand. They went up a number, they were out of numbers to go.

I personally dont think this big of an update (a new XMB group? big to me) deserves to go to 1.95. And if anyone does, well...you're making excuses. Look at what .01 increment updates had, nothing of importance.

They just run out of numbers - this update is bigger than a 1.9x

I'm just happy in game XMB is actually "in the works", i don't care what numbered iteration of the firmware it arrives on.

Choose which XMB™
(Cross Media Bar) feature
would be most important
to you in a possible PLAYSTATION®Network update:

1. In-game access to PSN messaging 45% (615 votes)

2. Ability to play my own music from the XMB while in-game 51% (704 votes)

WTH!!!!!!! is that real, music is ahead?

It is implicit in calling it "2.0"

I just think this is poor marketing by Sony . . .

Joe: Hey, I just heard the PS3 got a new 2.0 firmware update . . . what does it do?
Bob: Well, I can have new backgrounds in the menu . . . and I can create playlists.
Joe: That's it?
Ur annoying.

You can also bring up the XMB while reproducing a movie (not disc based), a song, a picture slideshow or surfing the web all the while the Remote Play is in progress.

That's so odd indeed.

not so much odd at all really. XMB frees more memory when you are gaming.

WTF?

I guess Sony just wanted to announce a new '2.0' firmware in the xmas selling season . . . never mind that it adds very little, especially if you don't have a PSP.

The DVD upscaling & 720p Blu-Ray update should have been 2.0. This update is trivial.
There's barely any marketing in these firmware updates. The fact that we're actually getting more formal announcements of what's in each update seems more a reaction to outcry from forums like this when they previously released FW updates with much less fanfare. The announcement is not in any way out of proportion with the update - there's an update and they announced what's going to be in the update. OMG, what attention whores...

What's funny is that if this was called 1.98, people wouldn't whine.

Anyway. Sure, there's no ZOMGWTF new feature, but still, those are pretty big changes on the XMB and the PS3's OS, so yes, it should not be a 1.9X one.

Also, I blame Home's delay.

I think Sony really needs to rebrand Remote Play..very misunderstood. "PS3 Anywhere" would do the trick..but..

Nobody get your hopes up over the "several other features" comment. It's probably something unbelievably minor that didn't warrant mentioning in the press release.

Forget re-branding it, they need to promote it! I have several friends with both PS3's & PSP's, and I was surprised that non of them knew about the feature. I only realized they didn't know about it till one asked about "Remote Play" on the XMB. Anyways they don't follow forums or anything, so I assume there are tons of people out there that just know nothing about it!

I really like the customization and themes. There's going to be PC software to allow you to create themes for the PS3, which should be cool. Yeah, I would have enjoyed a few meatier features, but it is what it is.

Please go invest in something.

But what? I think you're right.

speculawyer, like any Xbox 360 update, let's discuss what's actually there, and not dwell too much on what should be there.

They probably legally could call it PS3 Anywhere, but it would just be too evocative of MS's branding of a different kind of product.

But I think they need to get something similarly descriptive of what it actually allows...something that encapsulates the "where you want it, when you want it" idea.

WOW. I am loving the look of that!

Word. :D

since many of you no longer have immediate access to NPD sales figures, some of you have resorted to arguing about the difference between point release, minor release and major release numbers?! go figure.

I think they should call it either Playstation Now or Around the World in 4D Daze (it's a play on words, it's gotta work).

Wow – a lot of comments, and very quickly. Let me address a few things:

About the firmware version number – In general, we don’t wait to release new features based on a particular firmware update number. The 1.80 update, for example, was pretty substantial, including important features like DVD upscaling.

That said, this update does include valuable features that consumers have been asking for – such as the Remote Start functionality. Personally, I’m looking forward to using this feature as I’m frequently on the road – and I know a lot of you are too.

As far as other features many of you are calling for (such as in-game XMB) – SCE continues to evaluate opportunities to provide new functionality to PS3 on an ongoing basis. New features and functionality have continually been added to the system since it debuted, and we will continue to update you with new developments.

We do read your comments, and they have helped shaped previous updates – including this one.

What a crock, If they actually read the comments they would know that In-Game XMB access is at the top of the freaking pile!!!
And who's to say it's not at the top of SCE's pile? Just because it's not here doens't mean it's not SCE's top priority.

It should be fun finding out all the little things they've fixed that are never mentioned in the press release. Treasure hunt starts in twelve hours!

No, because if it was a minor update it would be 1.95 and it would have appeared in September or similar. Sony have been working on this thing for some time and with Home coming soon as well as other functionality it seems highly likely that much of the work going into 2.0 is preparation for these things. I believe that 2.0 is going to see the reappearance of regular updates and that 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 are going to see substantial functionality only made possible by what's going in tomorrow.
