Firmware Version 2.00 - Official Press Release

SCE continues to evaluate opportunities to provide new functionality to PS3 on an ongoing basis. New features and functionality have continually been added to the system since it debuted, and we will continue to update you with new developments.
We do read your comments, and they have helped shaped previous updates – including this one.

Did he read that form a CORPORATE RESPONSE manual?

No, because if it was a minor update it would be 1.95 and it would have appeared in September or similar. Sony have been working on this thing for some time and with Home coming soon as well as other functionality it seems highly likely that much of the work going into 2.0 is preparation for these things. I believe that 2.0 is going to see the reappearance of regular updates and that 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 are going to see substantial functionality only made possible by what's going in tomorrow.

Huh, I thought were saying that the update wasn't major enough? I agree with you, you basically said what I've said as well. And what you "believe" was already confirmed lol. All I'm saying, and what the Blog just confirmed, is that the "number" doesn't matter, no matter what some people want to believe.

I think this is how it will shape up after tomorrow's update...then we'll see Home appear with FW 3.0.
Game 3.0 - see the connection?

Actually, that is their stock resonse in regards to questions about FW stuff from the media. I've seen it a few times before.

I'm laughing at all of you for hyping up 2.0! and that "firmware 2.0" wishlist was a serious joke. And now the bitching about lack of Ingame XMB access. Sony listens, they try to deliver. but when they do, its always lower than the gamers expectations.

I think they know we want at least in-game messaging and custom soundtracks in games. But there are technical issues which arent that easy to overcome.

stop your whining. they know what you want. its just not that simple to deliver it.

I hope they at least updated the flash player on the browser so I can watch the videos posted on their blog from the PS3.

I think the problem lies in that, what Sony is taking a year+ to implement Microsoft has it since launch.

And Microsoft is struggling to build a machine that doesn't die 1/3 of the time. Each company has it's strengths.

I dont really care for in game XMB most games allow in game access to the friends list although i dont know why.

Enjoy your ban.:lol

The sentiment is perfectly reasonable i.e. that each company has different strengths. I think that's obvious.

Furthermore, it's not as if the 360's system software is a superset of PS3's. There are features and subtleties in the PS3 OS that you could say the same about re. MS's slow or nonexistant implementation.

That said, though, I would have expected in-game messaging within the first year.

wtf? are you implying that THAT comment would get him banned? if so, there should be about 10 other bans in this thread since there were much worse comments on the fw in here.

What's funny is that if this was called 1.98, people wouldn't whine.

Anyway. Sure, there's no ZOMGWTF new feature, but still, those are pretty big changes on the XMB and the PS3's OS, so yes, it should not be a 1.9X one.

Also, I blame Home's delay.
No, if this was called 1.98 update, people would still complain. They'd be complaining about having to upgrade their firmware for too small of an update and just bring on 2.0. I remember people complaining about having to update to 1.81, 1.82, 1.92, etc. Sony could put in-game messaging, music selection in-game, and a whole bunch of other stuff, and there would still be people complaining.

Great post. I read the article over the PS3 RAM issue, and it definitely is serious atm.

I wonder if the changes to the themes include being able to change the colors of the original XMB icons. So that white or light colored backgrounds could be used?

There hardly seems to be any upgrades that benefit the actual playing of games, (custom soundstracks, in-game xmb stuff) which is very dissapointing. I expected Sony to be much faster with this and they need to be faster with this.
The rest I'll have to see in the update, but it sounds neat.

Why? Firmware don't sell consoles. And there isn't enough time in a TV Spot to advertised "We have in-game messaging!"

Lame as hell. I mean what can I even do with the psp remote play? Play fucking Lair!?! The ps3 playback is pathetic, and I can't play shit that I actually download... On top of that it sucks at organizing music.. but I guess the playlist is supposed to help there. Lame update.

If you have a PS3 and have friends on the network then you want in-game messaging.

It sucks so bad when you're playing your game and receive a "message was received from so and so" notice and can't reply without having to save your game and then quit your game then slide to your friends list and dig up the message. Read it, reply, slide to game, start game, load your save.

FIX IT, SONY!!!!

This is the update I've been waiting for to pick up a PSP. :D

Will be great for getting a headstart on demo downloads while I'm at work.

huh? What? I'm approaching this from my own perspective, as a gamer, because I bought the console and I want to see that stuff and want it sooner than later.

I expected Sony to be much faster with this and they need to be faster with this.

So that's what they need to be faster at this? For you?

Yes. What's so strange about that?

Although you can also make to argument that they need to be faster with this on a competive level because MS isn't standing still with updating the features of their firmware either.

which goes back to my point then. They don't need to "compete" with MS because firmware don't sell consoles.

Maybe not in itself, but it makes the package more attractive for future and current PS3 owners. I really don't want them to keep the current firmware forever.

Why have they not included the ability to have a PS3 Timed Shutdown? I mean you can remotely turn on and off the PS3 with the PSP but we can't have the ability to have the PS3 turn off after a certain amount of minutes, hours or when a download is finished.

I don't know if any of you download stuff off the PSN over night but i do and it would be nice to have the ps3 shutdown when a DL is finished and not have to run the entire night.

Personally i think its a decent ability to add. Hell most TVs already have the auto shutdown feature.

one you pay $50 a year for one you do not. :/ So far beyond the in game msging PSN has been just as good as XBL and better in some areas.

speculawyer, like any Xbox 360 update, let's discuss what's actually there, and not dwell too much on what should be there.

Well on the plus side, this PS3 firmware update is more substantial than most xbox 360 updates. The PS3 is now head & shoulders above the 360 in terms of being a good media hub. Unfortunately for Sony, only me and a handful of other A/V geeks care.

Play your X360 from around the world Spec.

I did say:
never mind that it adds very little, especially if you don't have a PSP.

I guess Sony thinks this will help leverage more PS3 sales from PSP owners (or PSP sales from PS3 owners) . . . but I really think they are crazy to spend so much effort on features that only a very small number of people will really use.

See here's what people fail to realize. Silver members have every functionality that Gold members do, the only exception is online play. Silver members can send messages, read messages, stream music, cross game voice chat, without paying a dime. Fifty dollars only gets you online play, everything else is equal.

Sony keeps dropping the ball. You guys can sit here and say that it won't sell the console, but you're just deluding yourselves. Harrison and Co. are asleep at the wheel, too busy worrying about some virtual world, instead of focusing on what really matters.
