It's really nice that they're trying to do something different from a straight up costume, but something about this Marvel job looks off just like Thor, where the it comes off feeling more like a Halloween costume than the real thing.

It doesn't help that everything surrounding Captain America looks like a rejected idea from GI Joe

Indeed. The suit looks awesome, and then I see those guys standing around and I'm like WTF? My hopes are slowly rising, so don't fuck this up Johnston or you'll lose what little respect I have for you from The Rocketeer.

Yeah, definitely. Cap looks great. All the
HYDRA
(is that a spoiler?) stuff looks cheap and blatantly designed to make a good action figure.

Duh.

The whole reason it's Hydra and not Nazis is probably because of this. You don't want children playing with Hitler dolls.

The helmet just looks fucking silly. Looks like some sort of Lucha-Libre dude. You can't take that face seriously.

They might as well just have not make him wear anything on his head really, except in some specific cases and it should have looked like a US soldier's helmet, nothing more. No need for the stupid thing around the eyes unless he's riding a motorcycle, in which case there should be goggles.

Anyway I can't stand super-hero movies so I'm always biased against them. The only super hero movie I liked was Unbreakable, which wasn't really one anyway:p

I thought it might've been neater to actually have a pair of leather goggles, or at leas the frames - that is, not be a part of the helmet.

That said, the whole point may be that it's a mask - designed to hide the identity of the wearer, and not for any particularly practical reason.

Fucking cool.

I wonder if that scene is from the final act of the film given the missing shield and ominous looking missile backdrop...?

Nobody has been confirmed or announced for the score and coming from IMDB I wouldn't get your hopes up just yet.

This looks so ridiculous. He looks like he plays for some wack ass football team. The enemies look even worse.

Actually i think that scene is from the beginning. They are doing it in the style of the first ultimates seres showing cap in WW2 stopping the missile. Getting blown up and thrown into the ocean then waking up and getting a more updated look.

More like they are doing the entire WWII backstory then most likely ending it with him getting blown up and thrown into the ocean, only to be revived in modern day right before/after the credits, or at the beginning of Avengers. Unless they begin with the missile scene then flash back to the lead up to it.

Yeah, but it's Captain America. You can't make a decent design without changing everything iconic about him.

There are times in which I forget that IMDB shouldn't always be considered a go-to source for information. It is in these times that I must apologize to my kinsmen but at the same time keep my hopes firm and steady that Lord Giacchino will indeed score the film.

So this is pretty much the true ramp up to the giant mega mega super ensemble Avengers trilogy or some shit right?

The title "Captain America: The First Avenger" does seem to imply this, yes, if you carefully read between the lines.

Well I hear they just delivered the script to him...

How hopeful is it that despite being the Avenger's ramp up it'll be good as a stand alone? Personally, I think Iron Man 2 could was derailed so much by all the expanded universe stuff that it detrimentally affected the film.

Depends how many villains they try and squeeze in. The problem with most bad comic book movies is too many baddies.

It has an advantage as there won't be any scenes in the middle of the movie with that awful Shield guy showing up spouting unnecessary crap

At worst there will be a garbage prologue and epilogue set in the present, with an untainted main stretch, unlike Thor which is going to be infected with the shield trash from start to end

The costume looks very nice, but everything else looks very "meh." I think Marvel should invest in some better directors, as they've not yet produced anything to the level of, say, the first two Spiderman movies or Batman Begins.

I read somewhere that the movie will start and finish with him frozen in ice. It all takes place during WWII, and the suit and shield are invented/ designed by Howard Stark ( Iron Man's father)

I am becoming convinced at this point that we can no longer really tell what looks "fake", or good, or bad, or plausible, or implausible objectively.

We have way too much baggage of fantasy films, special effects, video games, how we "think" things should look that we've never even seen, versus how reality can surprise us or even look surreal to our own eyes.

Like a guy on a CG forum said, the world's best render of a 10 foot tall evil knight with flaming eyes and a glowing sword will look totally fake to you because you go into it knowing it can't be real.

Likewise, everyone has their own increasingly byzantine idea of what is realistic when it comes to stuff like uniforms, clothing, and bloody hell, even skin tone.
