Ok, so what is the point of doing this reboot, really? So is this supposed to be the "kitschy, next gen Gravity Falls take" on the characters' appearances or something? What on earth is wrong with Donald for one thing? He looks like a weird rag doll that got run over a car. If the staff are really such big fans of Carl Barks (and I would hope Don Rosa too) then why didn't they at least try to make the art style look a lot more like the comics? This looks like mediocre fan art or something from a bad newspaper strip. Besides his writing and storytelling style, the art of both Barks' comics and the original series are equally core to why Ducktales is still so beloved to this day and exactly why the reboot announcement was initially so exciting. Obviously nobody wanted CGI, but who wanted the show to look something like this when it was announced?
I was really hoping this would mark a return to some really eye pleasing, traditional 2D core Disney art, so much for that. It's like there's this odd rule now between artists and execs with 2D animation that you have to make characters look distorted and overly silly otherwise it's feared kids won't like or relate to it somehow. Either that or the artists are just trying to leave their own mark as a priority over legacy. Anyways, when Terry McGovern confirmed none of the VAs were being asked back that killed a lot of interest I had early on. I wasn't expecting Alan Young because he's 96 but if the others were up for it they should have asked them back. I'll take a grain of salt and watch it when it airs but...ugh, this promo pic is just underwhelming and feels like a dismissive treatment to both Bark's art and the original series. Oh and Webby had to be shoe horned in of course.
Edit: Ok, after looking at the pic some more, the art style is growing on me. At least they're trying to make a classic 2D cartoon, but I still wish it matched the comics much more closely.
