First Review for The Last of Us

Citizen Kane is much like The Beatles-you check it out now and are like "this is what the fuss was all about?"

But it's context-they pioneered basically everything in their respective fields in regards to everything that came after it-you can't really appreciate them until you know how they really brought a lot of innovation to the table. I highly recommend watching the DVD of Citizen Kane with Robert Ebert'd commentary-it's a real eye opener.

Maybe they got confused with the demo releasing tomorrow and just put up their review.

"A bit short, but quality entertainment that matches the like of Citizen Kane, cause that was supposed to be a good movie, right? One of the best digital freeware games you'll play this generation."

..it may also prove to be gaming’s Citizen Kane moment..

Anyway: yesssss. Cant wait. If its actually better than U2 its going to be my game of the gen.

Hyperbole train, here we go

What other hyperbole do we need to fuel this train?

We've already got:

"The best game of this console generation"
"The Citizen Kane of video games"
"A masterpiece that will be remembered for decades"

...What else?

I know we'll at least need:

"Oscar-worthy"
"Oscar-quality"
"So revolutionary"
"One of the best games I've ever played"
"Virtually flawless"
"Is it possible to give this game an 11?"
"As close to perfect as you're going to get"

Didn't somebody try this "Citizen Kane of gaming" thing with Metroid Prime, years after it came out?

Silly then, and silly now. If gaming is to have a Citizen Kane, it has come and passed, and it probably had a terrible story. We are pretty far in to pretend that every big game is changing the medium forever, and the fact that this ones high points are probably non interactive means it's more important to gaming cinematics than actual gaming.

Anyway, can't wait to play it. I'll be in Disneyland when it releases so I guess I'll be a week late or so.

You forgot the most obvious one :p

"The best game of all time"

This guy that wrote the review doesn't even sound like he even played the game. And reading some other reviews he had done, it's pretty much cookie filler crap I could write up myself if I browse through the internet to gauge from how other gamers/"journalist" judges from the games he "reviewed" upon. Not saying TLoU won't be great, but this definitely isn't a true review imho.

You need to have versimilitude in there

Im sure the game will be great but will it really take GoTY? Theres alot of hype for this game. The first ND game I played was Uncharted Golden Abyss and ND didnt even make that one. I found it repetitive basically climb this climb that shoot here swing on this rope etc. Ive heard their story telling skills are pretty sharp though. We'll see. I guess after playing The Last of Us we will finally understand the meaning of life.

Wtf? How is it a ND game if its not made by ND? @_@

I can see it now:

Games like this only come around once in a generation. The Last of Us is a beautiful, sprawling adventure that proves to be one of the most, if not the most, ambitious titles ever created. Just when you think you have it figured out, an entirely new element is introduced that enriches it further, rendering it one of the least repetitive experiences to be had with a controller. An inspiring testament to what can be accomplished with unbridled devotion, it’s possible that nothing of this magnitude will ever be attempted again. No matter if you’re a fan of Naughty Dog, or even the genre, The Last of Us must be experienced; it’s a truly definitive event that will be looked-back as a crucial step in gaming evolution.

The 21 Jump Street of video games.

The Spiderman 3 of video games.

The Mean Girls of video games.

The Avatar of video games.

The Pokemon 2000: The Power of One of video games.

The Dennis the Menace of video games.

The Herbie: Fully Loaded of video games.

Love it! lol! <3

"It's almost too good."

Guessing Greg Miller will give this an 11/10.

The Last of Us is an amazing game. I'm going to write about its scary moments, cool kills, and how much I dig the main characters' internal struggles, but Last is about more than this. When I beat it for the first time, I sat on the couch with my heart racing and dissected the journey I had just taken. Then, I started my second playthrough, and when that was done, I jumped into a new game for the third time. The Last of Us is just that good.

The Last of Us is the reason I play video games. From the smile plastered on my face during the opening montage to the disbelief that swept over me as the game began to the middle of the night text message I shot a friend about a relationship reveal, I couldn't stop loving this touching, beautiful, fun and engaging game. From the moment the music swells on the title screen to the moment the credits roll, The Last of Us is a masterpiece.

I don't like to defend reviews (in fact I rarely read them), but none of those statements of absolute fact are in the quote in the OP:

The Last of Us is not just the finest game that Naughty Dog has yet crafted and an easy contender for the best game of this console generation, it may also prove to be gaming’s Citizen Kane moment – a masterpiece that will be looked back upon favourably for decades.
The masterpiece comment is clearly there to qualify the Citizen Kane reference.
