It begins!

This and A Link between worlds releasing almost at the same time. It's going to be a fun holiday! :D

I remember back when Galaxy was about to come out Matt Castlevania was saying how he wanted to score it lower than Mario 64 just because it came after it. He said the same thing about Metroid Prime 3. He said both games were the best in their franchises but he didn't think sequels could have higher scores. That guy was really full of himself. He also wanted to hold higher scores ransom for games like Zelda unless Nintendo changed things he didn't like like lack of voice acting.

I don't know what his exact words are, and neither do you, from what I can tell

but time of release is crucial in determining score. I would completely agree with him that Galaxy (2007) needs to be scored lower than a landmark, genre-shaping game like Mario 64 (1996). We're talking about an industry that will later be looked back upon as being in it's infancy, so ranking a good effort like Galaxy above a benchmark game from 11 years (!!) earlier seems foolish. We should strongly consider release date and what games came prior when we score games.

That would make Mario 64 more influential, not better. The effect on the industry makes no difference to the quality of the game.

Yeah, but Audrey was nice to look at, so it evened out. =P Jose is an old EGM, and 1up.com editor, and guested on Retronauts for about a dozen eps. He's good podcasters.

...nooo. I've seen attractive girls before. That's a shitty reason to keep a bad critic around. I get you're joking, but yeah, she sucked. Good for her working at Nintendo. That's clearly a dream job for her, but I can't take her seriously as a reviewer (it's hard enough to take seriously as is).

TLoU vs GTAV vs 3D world

lol nope

Having to consider where a game stands amongst decades full of predecessors that were judged against different tech standards at the time makes for silly review scores, like worrying whether a game can be a 9.4 if the previous entry was a 9.3, when percentiles are already absurd considering the film industry pretty much manages everything on a 5 star system.

I prefer it when games are simply judged on an individual basis by an individual reviewer against the visable scoring policy of the website at the time, it's far easier to understand than worrying about the sheer weight of what came before every time and isn't desperately tying itself in knots, trying to fit thousands of games over several decades, reviewed by dozens of different staff, into a distinct hierarchy of percentiles based on opinion. It's enough to have tiers of games without worrying whether one awesome title is a whole meaningless 1% better than another awesome one.

If being influential trumps quality, then no platformer can ever be quantifiably better than the original SMB, modern shooters don't out score CoD, and every sequel under the sun is unable to be better than its predecessors, effectively making their review scores gradually get capped ever downwards. That's clearly unfair when something like Mario Galaxy, clearly influenced by SM64 and Sunshine, goes back to the drawing board and comes up with 18 hours of sheer creativity in comparison.

For all the doom and gloom, Nintendo managed to make up about half my goty list this year (assuming LBW and this are indeed as good as they look).

I imagine the reason why that review needs to be chased around and mirrored is because Nintendo is probably using the same scripts to search for that video as they are the scripts that search for ROM emulators of their games. Nintendo's anti-piracy website mentions a script or something to that effect for finding and taking action against distributors of Nintendo emulators, and I would imagine it's a highly similar system here.

Okay, saw the video review, and that stupid IGN dude spoils the fact that there's a
second set of secret levels after you beat the first 8?
What a douche!

IGN's review accidentally went up before the embargo.

IGN Reviews:

Super Mario 3D World: 9.6

Super Mario Galaxy: 9.7
Super Mario Galaxy 2: 10
Super Mario 3D Land: 9.5

That's good for Mario but honestly ign game reviews have lost all weight to me within the last two years. Still visit the site though for news and whatnot but that call of duty ghost score they gave out really makes me feel they are not intent at all on reviews.

All those overreactions to one review are hilarious. When will gamers ever learn.

*I'm not saying the game isn't great*

Why are you acting all passive agressive both in this thread and in the Link Between World Review thread? Does it hurt your feeling that a system that you've expressed so much disinterest in gets a well received game?

What do you care what a game on what you use to refer to as "a dead system" scores anyway?

Just when I decided to sell my launch Wii U Deluxe. Conflicted..

Seems a shame to get rid of it right before Mario. Better to buy Mario, play it to death, then sell it after if you still feel that way. Although saying that, there's always going to be a pretty sweet game around the corner, it's just how Nintendo roll. Next year we have Mario Kart, DK, Smash Bros, Bayonetta, X, Zelda and more, all of which will be near to this level of greatness. Can't wait!

Was kinda in every game since NSMBWii. Wouldn't really consider this a spoiler.

Well, I don't mean the idea of secret levels, but the fact that the remaining levels make up
nearly half the game.

That's quite a bit different than what we're used to in Mario games.

Cause I'm at work and bored. And I think you confuse me with another member. Or do you refer to the ONE post in the other thread?

This and ALBW shows that the fine folks at Nintendo are still the masters of game design.
Super Mario Bros - 1985
The Legend of Zelda - 1986

Almost 30 years later these series are still the benchmark of their respective genres in the industry. Bow.

And rent Lego City cuz it's hilarious. Seriously one of the funniest games I've played in a long time.

Oh yeah, I forgot about this too! I love Lego City. Only problems with it I have is that it's useless to explore until you get the last suit, and having no radio when driving around makes exploring really fucking dull feeling.
