Flower (PSN)

Downloading. :D

I love it when a game that looks as good as this does sneaks up on me. Pleasant surprises are always good.

Tempted to get this. Cant really make up my mind.

I'm quoting you, but this goes for anyone.

If you have the tiniest, most miniscule bit of interest in Flower GET IT.

both. the whole game (especially the ending) is absolutely amazing. it's like the first time you watched porn, everything is magnified.

its kind of... interesting... at first it was a bit of a gimmick until you realize how great being the wind feels with six axis, then its mesmerizing as you release the first flowers by a rock formation and the grass grows, then it gets a bit fun as you start looking for unpollinated flowers. Its the type of fun you'd have with something like Eden due to its more relaxing type nature. This is coming from someone who hasn't played the later levels so just an early impression.

It was really relaxing playing this. It has a soothing, calming effect. Kill the lights, turn up the 5.1 and just zone out.

I see myself coming back to this alot.

If you have ever fantasized about soaring through the sky, over lush meadows, rolling hills and rippling streams, pulling up high into the sky and seeing the distant horizon, then falling gracefully towards the ground and grazing the grass with your outstretch hand, then yes, it's fun to play.

Not to mention the way the rumble is used.

oh yeah, that and the music you make based on the speed of pollination for flowers :P Lumines + Eden + fl0w - stress = Flower???

They could basically do a NiGHTS ripoff with that engine and release it as an expansion. This game has a lot of potential for furthering the game play, I look forward to seeing what they plan on doing.

Edit: I forgot to mention how nice I was to play a game without a giant back story to it with cut scenes every 10 minutes. It was all pure game play from start to finish and it was happles.

I played the first three levels so far only. It was hard to stop, but I want to leave some for tomorrow as well.

So far I honestly have a feeling this game stands toe to toe with Rez, in the way it just completely captivates you the first time you play it. It is similar in concept to Flow, but it's theme is much more relatable and less abstract. Looks like ThatGameCompany has really struck gold with this, and I'm apparently not even up to best parts yet.

Who said games can't be defined as art?
That's not even up to discussion in my opinion. Anyone who can claim that probably doesn't understand the concept of interactive art, or simply hasn't been playing the right games.

Someone might want to get him a copy of the game, so he can admit he was wrong before he kicks.

You should probably check out Cloud then. Indie game a few pre-thatgamecompany staff were involved with back in '05 - same designers, same composer in Flower.

Oh cool. I actually had tried Cloud sometime ago but had no idea it was the same developer, although I'm not really surprised to hear it... the tone of the two games is definitely similar.

It also makes you wonder why most of the bigger devs can't get motion controls right, when fl0w and Flower do it so perfectly - one in 2D, the other in 3D. Those two have proven you can build games entirely around motion controls, so there's really no excuse.

Good point. I was a little wary of this game being (almost) entirely motion-controlled when I read about it, but they definitely nailed it. I think the bigger devs screw it up because it's either a tacked on feature or because they try to get away with too much (Lair). The simplicity of Flower lends itself well to the SixAxis (for once).

Hey, does anybody have the last green (special) flower on the very last level? It is the only one I need in the whole game and I can't find it for the life of me!

Unless you mean the credits it's
inside one of the skyscrapers in the second area of the city. Enter from the top, I think it's the tallest one around.

This game is great. Goddamn. Man. I am excited.

edit: I wish it weren't late at night. I want to, like, go and tell people about this game.

No, that's the first one in the level. The second one is under the bridge to the left of the highway as you first get on it. I need the very last one in that level! I'm guessing it's somewhere up the scaffolding but I can't find it.

I just read the last 300 replies that were made since I left.
I'm so glad that everyone is as amazed by this game as I was. :)

All the doubters should just read the comments (without the spoilers of course).

And at the same time you don't want to tell them too much. Sort of "OMG! Go play this NOW" feeling, thatgamecompany has a big winner here, props to them.

Yeah exactly. Going to be hard to say stuff on a podcast next week that is both substantial yet unrevealing about this game.

Best downloadable title so far this gen. Actually, it feels totally timeless.

What a elegant, flawless package.

Underneath the surface is also a very pleasing Trophy adventure.

The most surprising element to me was the amount of gameplay variation they managed to do with sixaxis controls only. Each level has a specific purpose and theme, none of the content is bloated.

This game is breaking my wrists but I can't stop playing. So much fun.

Pretty much. Waggle drives my wrists crazy, I shake them off every few seconds just to keep going... luckily flower gets me in such a zone I tend to not notice.

I'd say you should compare it to FarCry 2.

That weed engine is amazing.
Not enough people say this, best grass in a game ever! That guy who made a thread about his infatuation with videogame grass must have gone crazy with that game.

Played through it all in one sitting and only managed to get 1 trophy. The last level was just amazing and sort of caught me off guard. It took a weird turn around the 3rd level and got a little confused as to where it was going

One of the better purchases I've made from the PSN store and well worth the $10.

I've just played the first two levels.

Games like these vindicate my love of video games.

Absolutely amazing.

That final level was one of the coolest things I've ever experienced in a game. Just a complete wonder to go through, much like the rest of Flower except amplified. From the art design on down to the contrast in gameplay from the level before it. I thought it was great how
they made that last level feel empowering, since you can smash through pylons that would previously hurt you, and you basically prettify everything you touch
.

I also really love the
nighttime
level. It's incredibly gorgeous.

I, uh... In my text document of notes taken about this game, I have already included a Far Cry 2 comparison. And it's not tongue-in-cheek. And I'm not kidding.

Beautiful, beautiful game - I only played two levels/worlds because I was really tired yesterday and felt continuing in this state wouldn't do the experience justice. Also, it's so soothing I fell asleep after completing the second level - and I woke up to a trophy. Amazing!

As I said, I only played two levels yet but the ending of the first level already blew my mind. It was one of the best cases of HD graphics and surround sound working together to create something really powerful. Definitley one of the most memorable experiences I've had in 30 years of gaming. The force with which the world came alive was unbelievable yet it was totally peaceful. Again, amazing!

I just noticed that (basic stage spoilers)
I had like 2.3 leaves in all the stages until the dark dark one. That environment really made me wanna gtfo, which reflected me finding 0 leaves in that one.

Just thought it was interesting.

Also, I just noticed that there's a really subtle tripping paint-like motion blur-esque effect. It's easily seen if you turn REAL fast, like your controller turned over fast.

I hated the dark dark level.
But the last level was amazing! Totally made up for it. Like the complete opposite of feelings for me.

Thats the amazing thing,
Level 5 has a total sense of dread and despair
, I totally did not expect anything like that in this game.

Without a doubt, my favorite PSN game by far. My jaw was on the floor throughout the whole game. Fucking amazing.

EDIT: Just noticed how many times the word "amazing" is popping up in this thread. Speaks volumes about the impact this game has had.

The game is really awestrucking from the get go until the end of it. I'm happy the thread is staying up on the first page. Hope it will draw more people to it. That piece of art (there I said it) needs all the exposition it can get.
