Flower (PSN)

Bumping this due to posting at the end of the last page...

When someone in this thread described the game as feeling like Wave Race, Pilotwings and Pikmin combined, and another person pointed out it costs as much as a couple trips to McDonalds, I decided to buy Flower.

Let me start by saying I'm a person prone to buyer's remorse. Heck, I even felt buyer's remorse with LittleBigPlanet, and that was a Christmas gift! (My problem with LBP were the finicky controls, for the record).

But I feel no remorse with Flower. Only joy. I'm trying to think of how to explain it, how I would've explained it to myself if I could go back in time, how I'd describe Flower to a person who nearly didn't pick it up due to the lack of a demo.

I guess I'd start by explaining what it is. You begin with a petal floating in the wind. Just one single petal. You then press any button -- any button at all -- to blow the wind. This causes your one petal to fly forward, whipping along in the wind. You tilt the controller to steer, and the motion-sensing is superb, detecting the slightest inclination of the controller so that you can move around by tipping the controller as gently as possible. It's fast, precise and effortless, quickly becoming second nature. Take it from a Wii gamer; it's as good as it gets.

The first level, the only level I've played so far (and I've played it several times, spanning a couple hours), is set in a grassland. Spread about the grassland are flower buds. By flying near each bud with your wind, it bursts into bloom, rumbling your controller (which is very satisfying), making a musical note and adding another petal to your breeze. As you fly about the landscape making flower after flower unfurl, your stream of petals grows longer and more colorful, and the music builds. Blooming patchs of flowers restores color to dry patches of grass and causes more buds to appear, often in trails leading to the next big patch. And so it continues, with no time limit and no HUD telling you what to do or where to go, although brief in-game cutscenes direct your attention toward key spots.

It really does feel like Wave Race, Pilotwings and Pikmin combined. Wave Race, in that soaring over the hills and skimming the rolling waves of grass feels like slicing surf on a jet ski. Pilotwings, in that the world is vast, mysterious and endlessly explorable, the sounds of the rustling grass and wind crisp and atmospheric. And Pikmin, in its reverence for nature, the sheer lushness and vibrancy of a living, breathing landscape, not to mention the addictive thrill of blooming more and more flowers, often in speedy chains as you whiz along, the world growing stronger for it.

The graphics are incredible, easily among the best I've seen this gen. No HUD or distracting text; just wilderness spreading as far as the eye can see, rippling in the wind as clouds pass overhead and cast shadows. The music and sound is incredible too, truly sucking you into the world and suspending your disbelief. The overall experience is haunting, some indescribable blend of existential melancholy and a true buoyancy of spirit, and the whole range of emotion that entails.

They really ought to release the first level as a demo. Flower is an experience not to be missed, and it's money well-spent given how endlessly replayable the first level alone is.

I just bought this, not knowing anything about it. After three levels, it's giving me lots of Sonic the Hedgehog flashbacks. Is this a pretty common touchstone for people or am I just weird? I think it's the speed of movement, the bright colors, and that you spend much of the game just cruisin between intermittant (in this case somewhat) binary choices.

Anyhow, I like it.

This feels like another overhyped GAF game.
In 3 months TOPS, you people will fallen off the Flower bandwagon.

Yes I bought it, and really I don't care that I spent $9.99,
that's nothing,
but this isn't that great of a game.

I know some of you will be saying, this game is art, etc...
Though, in reality, it's an Interactive Screen Saver.
I guess that could be a new genre, the ISS.

In retrospect, it is the best ISS I have ever played.

by your logic, any game that requires you to complete a task by moving around an aesthetically pleasing environment and completing tasks is an ISS

I think you should try and look beyond the conventions of what you think makes a video game, because as of right now, you have an outdated view on what makes a video game, and it shows.

"no fail state? SCREENSAVER!"

An outdated view?

Look I never said it wasn't a video game,
but really, you could leave the game alone for a few hours,
and a level could probably auto complete.

You need to physically hold down a button and move the controller around in order to get the "trigger flowers", which in turn opens up new areas, which ultimately leads to the end of the level. ;)

Just played it for the first time yesterday. I love it just as much as I thought I would: a lot. It's just very relaxing, but what I didn't know was that it's actually somewhat of a game! You do have to actually do stuff to finish the levels. I honestly thought it was gonna be more of a interactive screensaver, just floating around with the breeze, relaxing. A lot of the game is just that, but you do have to play it, which was a nice surprise.

I can't wait to show it to my nephew (2 years old) I wonder how he will look at the game. Will he be bored to tears or will he be awestruck? I'll see.

Definitely one of the best credits ever seen in a game. Definitely the best game of the year so far. Definitely stunning!

Personally I thought the game was a perfect length. While you can certainly finish it in one sitting, blasting through it isn't the way to play it. It's just such a beautiful experience you can't miss.

What I would have liked though seperatly from the main experience is some sort of score attack mode where you had to link up the flowers. The bigger the chain, the bigger the score.

And this game must be patched to include a Photo Mode.

:lol :lol :lol

Dumbest statement of the year.

IF you had bought the game, then maybe you should play it so you know what you're talking about. Instead you chose to spout this kind of dumb statement which is laughable to anyone who has played the game.

I showed this game to my friend. He played the thirst four levels and the credits. Then he asked himself, "what motivates me to actually bloom every single flower I see?" We couldn't really find a good answer, so we kept on collecting every single flower we could see.

One dose of this game a day keeps the stress away.

Well, my niece (also 2 years old) kept saying, "That's pretty uncle." But it did hold her very short attention span for more than a minute at a time.

All I keep saying while playing it is WOW! I swear the game looks like CG when you're zooming around the grass at high speeds. Hope they release more levels.

It feels weird to say it, but I kind of don't want them to do anything else with it.

Maybe if they'd just put out a huge sandbox level (like an "endless" mode or something), but I'd prefer it if they left the core... campaign, alone.

just finished the game, loved it,

i'm just hoping theyll release more levels : there are like 2 or 3 levels that are in nighttime,

i would have loved a level in the snow, or automn but at least, daytime levels

Yes, yes, yes!

I was hoping the last level was going to be snow but damn that would have been hot!

I still thought the first level was the most impressive in the game. The colours and brightness just stood out so much it was striking and breathtaking. Whilst the night/darker levels had their own charm and feel, they just didn't do it for me as much.

Visually, the first and second levels, and perhaps the end of the third, were easily the best.

To those that say I haven't played it,
so you can't leave a button pressed and let the invisible walls bounce you around?
Oh wait, you can.

Anyways, that statement was more tongue in cheek,
but really, I wonder if you left a button pressed for a few days, if a level could be completed.
(Maybe only the 1st level)

Why would you leave a button pressed for a few days?

Why don't you... you know play the damn thing like everyone else. Maybe that's your problem?

Invisible walls? The wind guides you back into the playing field. It's not the real world. You can't go on forever.

This is easily settled. PM me your PSN name MutFox, I'm a trustworthy and impartial chap. Check my post history! Then we can see who swallows their words.

The game's afoot.

I have played the game, haven't finished it yet though...
And from what people tell me, the final stage is where it's at,

So I'll give it a chance still,
but having finished the stage where
you get shocked, and petals burn
I'm still not feeling it yet.

I guess it's cause someone here compared it to Rez,
and I was expecting an experience like that when I bought it.

Sure, I'll give everyone my PSN, same as my GAF name,
(It's all over the forum from other PSN games I play online)
heck, I even have the emails PSN sent to tell me they took money from my wallet... LOL

Vindication. I'll send you a temp friends request and watch like a hawk to see when you're playing.

But I guess it's pointless cos whether you bought the game or not is a side-note.

Opinions, opinions. You're totally entitled to yours.

Don't watch like a hawk now, cause I'm going to bed,
but I'll probably finish the game tommorow night. :D
(It's 6:45am here)

Yeah I think that's why I was a bit disappointed in the game. People were hyping it up like it was the equivalent of Rez's Level 5. The last level in this is nice but not even close to being as overwhelming awesome as Rez's final level. If I had had lower expectations going into it I probably would have enjoyed it more.

Someone on another forum commented it was basically a more arty version of the new Prince Of Persia and thinking about it he might have a point. Lots of collecting shit to revitalise areas, no difficulty, simple controls, relies heavily on visuals as opposed to interesting mechanics.

I didn't actually switch on my PS3. Aside from your sleeping habits, which I won't comment on, good luck with the rest of the game.

Wow, now this game is something. Bought it today and I'm fascinated. It really got me in stage two where I could
paint the field
then going up and watching everything from above...lovely.

I still can't believe there is no demo. Does Flower have any trophies?
Seriously. They need to make demos mandatory. And yes, it does have trophies.

I wish this game did what Linger In Shadows did with trophies by handing them out outside of gameplay. I feel like it cheapens the experience somewhat, and having them remind me of it during gameplay is a minor downer for me. Trophies feel really out of place to me for games like this.

We all have different tastes, and it's only natural that someone doesn't like this game. What I don't understand is just because you don't like this game, the game is being overhyped. Do you think people are fooling themselves into liking the game? The enjoyment I got from Flower is just an elaborate lie I told myself?

Simple, some people like Flower a lot, and some people don't like it very much (or at all)...like with everything else. It's only natural. Why will the people that are enjoying the game now stop liking it in 3 months, as you predict? Because you didn't like it? A bit arrogant, no?

Also, your attempt to devalue the game by saying it could be left alone and finish a level by itself it's like saying to someone who just got a car that is fun to drive: "Fun to drive? Pfft, you don't even have to drive it to get to your destination, if you push it you'll get there eventually. Where's the fun in that?" What does it matter if a level could be finished without playing the game (let's assume that's possible, for the sake of argument), what matters is that it's a fun and rich experience to PLAY the game.

Just bought this game after you guys kept on going on about how good it is, currently downloading...boy are my downloads slow off the psn though :(

Yes, I thought the same exact thing. I was just playing around the 1st level, relaxing and enjoying myself only to be jarred back to reality with the trophy sound. ick.

My girlfriend calls me gay for playing this :(
my wife said she gave me a pass on this since I'm an artist :/

(she thought the game was lovely though and unlike anything she'd seen before. also thought it was a nice "end of the day" game so I could relax rather than getting ramped up playing some like L4D)

i too felt a rez vibe in parts of the last level. mostly the sound when you hit/went through certain things. it's definitely not rez but don't let you think it isn't a great game. best experience out there.

Bought it, played every level at least 2-3 times and gotten %100. I have to say i can't see the appeal of "unique" games like ico, rez, okami etc. Don't get me wrong im not saying they are bad games or boring games or anything like that but i just can't understand/comprehend the appeal of these kinds of games (artistic i guess). But flower was different for me i don't exactly know why but gameplay aside, for the first time i really appreciated the aspects like colors, audio queues and unique storytelling (even tho i didn't exactly understand :P). Best downloadable game i've played.

I know, right? There's a serious lack of curb-stomping, ass-kicking and button-mashing going on here. For fuck's sake, I am so sick of playing different and unique experiences. I mean, this game doesn't even have a mostly brown color palate or any bald guys, wtf? Someone please tell me again how this even qualifies as a video game? Screw you idiots for liking Flower, I'm going to go pwn some 15-year-olds in multiplayer...

Fantastic game (is it a game really? maybe experience is the better word). The art style and graphics suck you in, the music fits perfectly with the tone of the experience as well.

Only problem is it will be a tough sell, what with being called Flower, the way the game plays, and existing on the most niche system out there right now. But I hope it does well.

It's a nice game. Very relaxing. I sort of completed the first level without really knowing what's going on though. :lol

Do you have to collect all those white flowers? At some point I was having alot of petals in my wirlwind and I kinda got lost, I didn't collect them all and got to the tree.

EDIT: by the way, this game is having the most awesome trophy ever. Well, at least I laughed. I left the game on the title screen and after like 10 mins hanging your receive a trophy called something like "that's gameplay!"

.

This is strange. I've done the "pure" trophy a couple of times, but at the end of the level I would not get the trophy. I know I've been doing the right level and I am pretty sure I haven't been shocked both times. What could I possibly be doing wrong? o.O

Some people are saying you have to get the hidden flowers first. I don't know about that I'm pretty sure I was still missing one hidden flower when I got the Pure trophy but still worth a shot.

I already had all the flowers when I was doing it, so it must be something else...

I don't believe he was implying that your alternative was better. But I guess it's easier to dismiss things with sarcasm. If Flower is to be considered a videogame, then depth becomes an issue. If Flower is to be judged as an artistic experience, what facets of it comprise this? It's aesthetically pleasing, presented in an easily likable minimalist fashion and deals with a rather tame dialectic of nature and human society.

Now my question, to those who can actually give some thought to this: what does Flower mean to make an ontological distinction between the city and what I'll temporarily call 'rampant industrialism'? I've never thought of the two as separable.

Sash said:

I got by only grabbing the minimum amount of flowers necessary (purple flowers only, 4 towers). I also didn't move quickly during the last part and went slow by hugging the wall.

keikoku said:
I found all the secret flowers by myself, but I just can't find the last one of the 5th level ! Help gaf.

You're either missing one in the junkyard part before the last tunnel bit or the one you get by making towers collapse in the space where you have to make 3 towers white. collect the flowers by the non-important towers and they'll fall. One of them makes the hidden flower show up.
