[Forbes] Sony Should Be Putting All PlayStation Exclusives On PC, Day One

I doubt that Sony would ever cut corners on their console versions of games even in this scenario. They have different teams handling PC ports anyway.

You would hope not but who knows? We don't have a precedent for this scenario for a first party Sony title but we can be certain that developing a PC port simultaneously with the console version would take time/money that could be better spent making the console version better.

we had a post here, that said gow took 2 years to port it to pc.
Developing the game for day1, will take manpower and alot of time. Not worth it for Sony as of now. They need manpower.

no way a long time console user, will quit his console, and go to pc. Consoles are like cigarettes. They are harder to quit. they arent complicated like pc. PC will make you crawl back to consoles.

Yes. Good points.

Well.....there is lots missing from that list as well so your "no reason to buy 3 consoles" doesn't really work. Ideally that would be the case but it isn't there yet and no guarantee it ever will.

As far as "higher fidelity and performance"......that depends on the hardware as always. A lot of PC gamers have rigs far superior to consoles. Lots don't. You can't get PC's top performance at any price with a console. You can't get console's performance with PCs at console's price.

There are plenty of ways to look at PC and console gaming and there isn't one right way to do that.

Well, that’s just a partial list, and you can’t say the same for consoles. If you own only 1 of it, you ain’t getting all of the exclusives of other 2 consoles (and those on PCs), not to mention being limited to outdated hardware.

Thanks to PC exclusive features like DLSS and DLDSR, even old low end PC are now comparable to next gen consoles.

The landscape’s going to change, as people continue to upgrade from consoles to PC in the coming years.

Silly port-begging article tries to make a contrived article, all the while ignoring the most obvious reason Sony won't do this, i.e. a significant number of player overlap between console and PC exists, and so why should Sony limit their opportunity to get 100% of the revenue (on console) upfront while also giving themselves the opportunity to win a double-dip sale from those in the console/PC overlap?

A very ill-conceived article that is wholly transparent in its intent.

Even a complete list is going to be a partial list. That's my point. Even PC doesn't have 100% coverage, more than the rest, sure, but there are still a ton of games that require dedicated hardware. PCs can be just as limited to outdated hardware as consoles so no idea what point you think you are making there.

Isn't DLSS and DLDSR only available on RTX GPUs? Don't get me wrong, that's great tech, but you are still leaving older GPUs behind. A GTX 1080 Ti receives no benefit from either as it lacks the tensor cores. "Outdated hardware" and good luck upgrading.

As a guy who was fully intending to upgrade his PC and ended up buying consoles because the PC market is ridiculous.......the landscape is going to have to change a hell of a lot more than you think.

TLOU = PS3 + PS4 = 20 millions, so that's 2 platforms, and its still analyst's estimate

Spiderman, still not clear where 20 millions is???.... from someone's resume?? GTFO!!

The only acceptable number is PS4 GOW = 19.5M because that comes the developer official statement themselves, even that is not 20 millions
Your artificial qualifiers mean nothing. How many platforms do you think BOTW or Mario Kart 8 are on?

You seem rather triggered by the idea of Sony games being at 20 million :goog_unsure:

Why would Sony do this?
If they release the PC version day 1, there will be people, possibly a significant amount, who would've bought it for the PS5, buying it on PC instead. A PC sale is worse than a PS5 sale for Sony, because they don't get all the revenue.
If they release the PC version later, then all the PC only people who would buy it are still going to buy it (plus double dippers) so what money is being left on the table?
Not all games are huge hits and few games have the "legs" to sell two years after their release It's not for nothing that Sony is testing the waters by releasing select titles that they know won't fail . In the case by late release, the idea of big sales on preorders (many of which are based on the feeling that the game will be good) will be invalidated on the PC version. The games can hardly be sold at the day one price in Italy PS5 games are sold for an enormous 81 euro god of war on steam for 35. And there are games that turned out so bad after the release or that word of mouth was so negative that it wouldn't even be worth porting that if released on day one instead they would have could sell. Last talk about production costs .. developing the game with improvements for the PC .. scaling it down for PS5 has a cost .. developing a game for PS5 ... finding a way to improve the game in the PC version years later has another. The release of the all day One games on PC would allow Sony to compete with Microsoft (if they decided on a similar gamepass). In short, the disadvantages of a late release are obvious

No you couldn't and nope.
U would not be far off the core i3 12100 is £120, a RTX3050 is £229, 16gb is £60, PSU is £30, case is £20, SSD is about £90 and £100 for the motherboard

Which comes to £649, and most people have an old PC they could probably recycle the case and PSU.

(For ppl who did not see my prior post, this is in the context of if there was no chip shortage)

Nope. Nintendo will not lower the value of their IPs and brand for some chump change
let's be honest here ...Nintendo audience is definitely younger than playstation or Xbox and the same goes for the rating of their games. ..Nintendo knows that most of its users are so small that they don't have their own PCs. Of course they could certainly earn more by releasing the games on PC but I think that in their case the advantages would be much smaller than Sony and Microsoft.

The lifetime value of a PS4/PS5 console owner is worth more to Sony than a insignificant amount of PC copies sold of their first party titles.

The day one exclusives on PS, give people a reason to buy the console and than subscribe to things like PS Plus which makes more money for Sony in the long run. That’s why I don’t see them releasing first party games day one on PC anytime soon.
Agreed!
Sony would be crazy to upset their core customers. Playstation is a massive brand and money maker. To release games on day and date with PC would diminish and hurt the brand. Sony also do not have their own PC store.
Sony will continue to release PC ports but with a minimum 1 year wait IMHO.
They will obviously invest in their PC port developers and increase the personnel.
This article is a joke comparing a PC company ie MS with a console company Sony.

Why are you doubting those numbers? With enough marketing you can sell refrigerators to the Eskimos and Sony went all in on those. I'm 100% sure that Spider-Man hit the 20m, it's a huge franchise and even the shitty 2014 game without marketing sold well considering the hardware base at that time.

Some people think it's the end of PlayStation
Some peole simply hate changes
Some people can only enjoy games when they know others can't play it
Some people need that elitist "I'm so smart that i chose that platform" feeling

Also: Don't you know BryanK75??? He was the most upset person on GAF. Man i miss him.

I wouldn’t say ton of games. More like a handful noteworthy exclusive games left on consoles. And they are also coming to PC. Meanwhile, the amount games on PC continues to grow.

We’re definitely making great inroad with getting those console makers to bring their games over to PC in recent years. Certainly glad to see even Sony studios agree by stating it is a great idea to release them on PC. And they are very correct. They are given bigger room on PC to elevate their console games to a whole new level without any restrain at all.

Yeah Bryank was great.

the other points just seem crazy to me. If you truly just enjoyed the games for what they are you wouldn’t care where they were available to play.

Let's imagine PS games day one on PC.

Who/what do you think PS-only gamers would blame in case of a delay? Or if the game is released in an unpolished state?

Or if an online game, like GT7, is released with forced cross-play and PC cheaters ruin the game for everyone?

It is a bit more than a handful when you include Nintendo's exclusives and the fact that Sony has only added 6 games to PC at this point. If you have a gaming PC you can make the case that there is no need for Xbox, but if you want full coverage and day one releases you'll need Nintendo and PlayStation. We do not know what else is coming over. We can just hope, but I'm too much of a PS fan to wait on PC ports.

we're done here, back it up or stop making bogus claims
You do realise Nintendo have been in the games business far longer than Sony? They have built a massive loyal customer base over the years. Nintendo fans mainly buy Nintendo consoles to play their franchises.
There isn't much competition for Nintendo on their platform. Third party juggernauts like GTA 5, RDR 2 just to name two aren't available.
Why do Sony need to sell 20 million first party games for them to be a success?
You sell 5 million and that is a success.
Sony will have loads of titles that have sold 10 million+.
I don't even understand why your in this thread as it's nothing to do with Nintendo or it's sales figures.

It is baffling as some are so resistant to change some of which are inevitable. Guys the "if" is not even in question but only the "when".
This is the logic that essentially supports argument such as “one company starts making unhealthy / poisonous food, well now others must follow suit… it is new and progress, do you want to be the old ones out still stuck with edible food”. Now, this is a bit of an extreme metaphor, but the logic is the same. You assume it is better, others do see it as a hopefully dead evolutionary branch (also, not sure everything else is as still as some make it out to be).

Maybe 6-7 years down the line but wont happen right now.

Fotr MP, i still want to play against console players only (Xbox or PS). So hopefully that filter remains.

I wonder where that massive loyal customers base was when they released the N64, GameCube or WiiU.

These numbers here are only for the Switch platform. Nintendo clearly separates their list units sold by platforms. And no, they don't hide their numbers when they had a rough time during WiiU years. MK8 sold another 8.46 millions on WiiU (click on WiiU tab on nintendo official best selling list) BOTW sold another 1.7 millions on WiiU

Agree. But it is an interesting question. If you were going to try to do this, I'd think you'd want to compare AMD to AMD first of all.

Going by those specs. This is what I came up with:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/DrzJz7

Notes:
- I manually adjusted the GPU to its list price of $379. Actual price is $589
- CPU was hardest to match as there is no 8 core Zen 2 CPU under 4 GHz that I am aware of except the 5800G
- I went ultra-cheap on the PSU, case, CPU cooler. Literally picked the cheapest on the list.
- Motherboard has to be X570 to support PCIe 4.0
-If we wanted to be really nitpick then it could be pointed out there is no OS, keyboard, mouse, or controller, but I think this makes the point

So $1150 for something comparable to XSX and PS5. Even if we left out the case and PSU, we are still over $1000.

This shouldn't be a surprise though. All these parts are sold for profit. Consoles are not. They are subsidized by their ecosystem.

I am not sure about Playstation, especially considering we're also getting most of their games soon, save for the few negligible ones which is more than likely to come over anyway. Fortunately Sony has smarten up and starts investing in porting their games over to PC to pave for their inevitable future of PC gaming. Seems its only a matter of time before they release their games day 1 with PC next.

The best combo would be Nintendo Switch + PC. Switch has got the best exclusive 1st party games.

Well, you say that "we're also getting most of their games soon" from Sony but that's just an assumption on your part. Sony has said very little about what is coming next or when. You could be right, but you could be wrong.

Best combo depends on the person. I don't care for Nintendo's games so Switch has nothing for me. Best combo also depends on your budget. We can't assume money is no object because, for most, it certainly is. Best combo also depends on the type of experience you want. If you want the desktop gaming experience then yeah, PC is better. But most who want the living room gaming experience are going to want console. So, as always, "best" is incredibly subjective. Again, there is no right answer here, especially in the environment as it is where finding gaming hardware at all is painfully difficult.

More like $700

When u use these

Core i3 12100 = $140
RtX 3050 = $249
ASrock MB = $94

Plus u can case, PSU and ssd cheaper.

You dont need PCIe4 because series consoles are not PCIe4 speeds.

You are building a cheap gaming PC. I was building a gaming PC with specs comparable to XSX and PS5 consoles. Not the same at all.

The specs i said are better then yours.

The RTX 3050 has 9 tflops, for comparison the 3060 has 13, 3060 often beats the ps5/xsx, so a 3050 should be in there ballpark, without even factoring DLSS.

Close but unless I missed it no UHDBR and I still think both consoles would be better.

I never said it was close in price...

And its not far off in specs, I would not be surprised if it surpasses the current gens in some games, heck a 2060 super surpasses the current in some circumstances.
It is far off in specs/capabilities.
That PC would never run games with the fidelity as Rachet and Clank RA or Demon's Souls.

Regardless you said you could build a comparable build and were wrong.

This would also add pressure to internal development even with dedicated port studios. The master build of the game needs specific things set before they hand it off to pc port team/developer. Tiered release seems the smartest play.

God of War is included in PS+ collection
Historically lowest price on italian PS Store for GoW
Is still well below the day one price of games on PS5. Add that God of war is the most iconic title that the PlayStation has, as I have already said in titles until now released on PC have been chosen for fame, genre, and graphic potential (which they know are important in the PC world). Good luck selling Knack at 49 euro 2 year later . it would flop instantly
