Rogue Galaxy PS2

Not only great RPG but gorgeous cel shaded art.

I'll second Robotech: Battlecry. Wasn't a bad game, either, though kind of hard to find decent screenshots of it.

Red Steel 2.

Cel shading, The Wild West, Guns and Katanas. Wii motion + support. All the ingredients to make an awesome game.

XIII was so close to being a great game - very Goldeneye feeling, but there was like no feedback when being hit. I don't remember the controller rumbling and the edge of the screen would go red when your life was low, but I was constantly being surprised by low health and unable to find where the damage was coming from until too late. Presentation of everything else was really good - especially explosions and death animations where comic book panels would pop up.

Apparently Cel Damage, an Xbox OG launch car combat game is getting an HD remake:

I so desperately wanted this to be good since I love Twisted Metal and Jet Set Radio, but I played a demo in a Best Buy around launch and it just wasn't great.

I loved it on GC honestly.

The HDmake is already out, been out for over two years now.

That's my pick. I don't think this game ever got a fair shake, between coming out too late in the Wii's life cycle and its predecessor being such a mess.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars looked great on DS with its Cel Shading and also is one of the best games on that system

Is sheep Raider cel shaded?

maybe wasn't a masterpiece, but it sure was fun.
Nope it isn't on PS1..but on PC the objects had the black outline that PS1 version lacked.

Also it was a fantastic game, and I think it was one of the best looking PS1 games.

Its been out for awhile now. Got it for about $3 in psn about a month ago.Pretty fun game.

What do you do in this game? It looks charming.
You steal one sheep per level while Sam the sheepdog is guarding them. You also have environmental hazards.

The levels are complicated with several puzzles which you complete using ridiculously funny Acme gadgets. It's a great game, with good atomosphere, music and ofcourse incredibly funny.

Just some levels, every level is incredibly varied and different and has new surprises.

I was looking at the 20th Anniversary of Harvest Moon Website and happened across screens of the first "3D" Harvest Moon game, Save the Homeland for PS2:

I never played the game and I remember hearing mixed reviews, but I always found the art style gorgeous, albeit a bit surprising in the context of my previously preferred chibi-esque style for the series.

Nonetheless, it got me thinking about when cel-shading was a bit more popular. I think there are quite a few games that slipped through the cracks or at least aren't discussed much now, that sported this art style.

I haven't played Steambot Chronicles, but I see it mentioned on here as a hidden gem fairly often and it's lovely to look at.

Klonoa 2 is one of my favorite games of all time and it's hard to capture it in a screenshot. The game still looks terrific even through HDTV with component cables on a regular PS2. We need an HD collection and a sequel though. The game is a pinnacle in the 2D platforming genre and has charm to spare.

There's also a cel-shaded Japan-only Goemon game for the Nintendo DS. It looks terrific and I'd very much like to play it when my Japanese is up to par. You can read more about it at HG101 here.

There's a list of cel-shaded games here, but I'm unsure if it's complete:

Please share some of your favorite cel-shaded games, especially the oft-overlooked ones.
OP cel shading isn't just a colored artstyle + outline, it needs hard shadows, there shouldn't be a transition between a shade and another, this is cel shading:

"Cel shading (often misspelled as "cell shading")[1] or toon shading is a type of non-photorealistic rendering designed to make 3-D computer graphics appear to be flat by using less shading color instead of a shade gradient or tints and shades."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cel_shading

In any case my example is oreshika

OreShika_2_screenshot.jpg

EDIT:
my memory totally failed, those shadows are just textures so oreshika isn't cel shading, shame on me lol.

Ah, I see what you mean. Hmm. I'm not too well versed on the tech side of things but it looks like a debate over this happened on the Wiki page I linked to, in the Talk section: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:List_of_cel-shaded_video_games. It doesn't appear it was resolved. I'll take your word for it, of course. All of the games I listed were from this list. I guess what I really should have asked for was forgotten cel-shaded or similarly cel-shaded-appearing games. Thank you for the info!

You wouldn't be the first person to make that mistake. I don't even bother correcting people about the term anymore. The battle is lost.

I'm not a huge fan of cel-shading, but I thought Samurai Legend Musashi on the PS2 had the best implementation I've ever seen. It had specific colors used for lines instead of uniform blacks.

The game is just okay though, a shame what they did to BFM's sequel..

Understood. Just out of curiosity, though, if these styles look similar, to the layperson, is there a better term then that can be used to describe this art style?

Fur Fighters: Viggo's Revenge. A game so obscure that there are no good screenshots on on google image search.

It's a really fun TPS/3D collect-a0thon platfomre hybrid. Despite the name, it's actually a updated rerelease of the original Fur Fighters and not a sequel. One of the things they changed was giving the game cel-shaded graphics.

I'd love that too, but sadly Bizarre Creations was shut down so I don't think we'll ever see anything from the series in the future.

I mean cartoon/comic pretty much covers it. It's just that Cel-shading refers specifically to the real-time shading of the characters.

Gotcha. Thank you!

man... This game is beautiful and has really awesome characters. I really wanted to love this game (on DreamCast), but the controls are terrible.

Not a huge fan of picture-only posts, but... WHAT IS THIS GAME? And more importantly, how do I not know about it? Looks freaking awesome.

OP, I don't know if you mean "masterpiece" overall, or just the art style, or just the gameplay. Not knowing this, my vote is going to a gorgeous looking game, albeit with underwhelming gameplay: Prince of Persia (2008)
