Forgotten Cel-Shaded Masterpieces

"Not a huge fan of picture-only posts, but... WHAT IS THIS GAME? And more importantly, how do I not know about it? Looks freaking awesome."

He mentioned it earlier, but it's Under the Skin, a PS2 game. Note that that's Nemesis and Jill Valentine.

Jet Set Radio.

Would kick a kid in front of his mother for a new one!

OP, I don't know if you mean "masterpiece" overall, or just the art style, or just the gameplay. Not knowing this, my vote is going to a gorgeous looking game, albeit with underwhelming gameplay: Prince of Persia (2008)

Nice looking game. But gameplay was boring as hell. Worst PP on consoles.

Nah, I'm not the person who posted the original picture, but happen to have it sitting on my shelf so I thought I could help out.

Anyone here played it? It got terrible reviews, but sounds pretty interesting.

I really do wish Killer7 and Viewtiful Joe would get some kind of re-release on current gen hardware.

Having sold all of my old games in recent years (I'm 33 with 3 kids have barely the time to play current games let alone go back and play ones I've already played) there isn't actually many games I miss. Most of my past favs have sequels, remakes or something similar to scratch that itch. But there is nothing out there like Killer7 and VJ.

It's all gone wrong since the IGN import invasion forum!

Ah.. Must have missed it. Thanks for the additional reply!

Agreed. I tried to be kind by using "underwhelming." But yea, it was fairly boring. I haven't played any of the Sands of Time games but I imagine they play better than this game.

Outline != Cel Shaded.
It may add to a cartoony style, but I always thought of Cel Shading as a style of texturing. Lots of solid colors and minimal details within a texture.

Cel-shading topic cycle:
1. New cel-shading topic
2. People mostly post games which don't use cel-shading.
3. Small group of people get annoyed and point that out
4. One or two people learn the difference, masses still clueless
1. New cel-shading topic
....

Do most old 3d RPGs count as cell shaded?

Like, if I made Skies of Arcadia today and released it as is but at higher resolution, AF x18, increased draw distance, and AA cranked up would it no be called cell shaded?

If so, my vote is Skies of Arcadia, its been almost totally forgotten
by SEGA

came to make sure XIII was represented here. I'm never needed...
I loved that game back then. Wish I still had it.

I remember thinking Auto Modelessta looked so amazing when I first saw it, but I never got to play it.

I finished Transformers Devastation last night. That game looks incredible and plays as good as it looks. Easily the most underrated game this gem.

indeed. underrated from a gameplay and visual perspective. fine game.
Is it really underrated though? People seem to love it here on GAF and I friggen loved it to bits (first Platinum* game I ever bothered to finish). I think any criticisms that anyone might have on the gameplay are probably justified too (repetitive backgrounds/lifeless environments). but damn... ("butt damn" Butthead:huhhuh) I thought it looked so damn good, though...

Fur Fighters: Viggo's Revenge. A game so obscure that there are no good screenshots on on google image search.

It's a really fun TPS/3D collect-a0thon platfomre hybrid. Despite the name, it's actually a updated rerelease of the original Fur Fighters and not a sequel. One of the things they changed was giving the game cel-shaded graphics.
A few months ago I told the main dev and copyright holder that I'd buy the game again if it was on steam. He said he'd love to release it and asked whether an initial release without MP (to be patched in) would be OK.
I haven't talked to him since but I'll make a note and ask him when I have some time.

really?

its still one of the highest rated, and one of the most beloved Capcom game

Okami? Never heard of it. That dog looks kind of the like the dog in UMvC3 though!
But seriously, I think there might be a small disconnect between what the title actually says, and how some are interpreting it.

Cel-shading is a style of shading, not texturing. You can have complex textures that are cell shaded, as in Prince of Persia.

Forgotten Cel-Shaded Masterpieces that aren't actually cel shaded or forgotten to be honest given that people are mentioning goddamn Jet Set Radio.

Catchy.

Too bad it controlled poorly. I can still remember renting it and hating it. How do you screw up controls for a racing game?!

By trying to make it for everyone and poor direction. The art style is amazing and unique, even a decent handling model would have been good enough.

I don't think Okami has any kind of shading let alone cel-shading. Or at least it seems like it.

Edit: Watched some videos and there is definitely some kind of crazy shadow stuff going on in the environment. I don't even know what that would be called. Whatever it is it doesn't look like what cel-shading usually looks like. Certainly unique and hard to categorize.

I'm willing to bet the average gamer doesn't know what Jet Set Radio is. Those are antiquated games at this point...

I don't know if it is really considered cell shading but it certainly has the cartoon look but I am playing the Darkness 2 and holy shit does it hold up and look great.

...That guy looks like he has a demonic boner....

Also, no, not cell shading at all. See wikipedia.

XIII was so close to being a great game - very Goldeneye feeling, but there was like no feedback when being hit. I don't remember the controller rumbling and the edge of the screen would go red when your life was low, but I was constantly being surprised by low health and unable to find where the damage was coming from until too late. Presentation of everything else was really good - especially explosions and death animations where comic book panels would pop up.

Apparently Cel Damage, an Xbox OG launch car combat game is getting an HD remake:

I so desperately wanted this to be good since I love Twisted Metal and Jet Set Radio, but I played a demo in a Best Buy around launch and it just wasn't great.

Cel Damage was my pick :(

Also Mad Dash Racing, JSRF, and.. iirc.. Whacked (not 100% sure on Whacked tho). Lots of cel shaded game in the early Xbox lineup.

Looney Tunes Space Race on the Dreamcast was absolutely amazing at the time. I doubt it has aged well, but back in the day it was just one of those games where me and my friends couldn't believe it looked as good as it did. Great animations as well.

Here's a look at the game in action. Just look at those animations! Amazing at the time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVDbmh4PvHw

Wile E. Coyote was always my favorite character, if only because, since the character doesn't speak, he actually has to use those cartoon boards (with 'Yikes!' etc), as you can see in that video.

I think the PS2 version looked less impressive though.

Also, a bit more recently, The Simpsons Game on the 360. Not the best game by any means but probably one of the better Simpsons games, if only because of the way it looks and the fact that it was actually funny at times. Haven't played it since it first came out though (which, I think, was around the time of the movie, so for a short period everyone got back into the Simpsons again).

Some good games to remember in here (and some that aren't cel-shaded, but that's in keeping with the spirit and tradition of cel-shading threads that we bicker and learn a little about cel-shading in the process.)

In keeping with that theme, I'll open and close my own discussion on Tony Hawk's American Sk8land, which I had always heard described as cel-shaded but in looking at it now looks very much just flat-textured with maybe Gouraud shading characters. Whatever the technique, Vicarious Visions took an engine that always amazed on the meager DS and kicked its appeal up to another level by emulating/employing some of the cartoon effects pioneered on consoles.

As a portable fan, I'd also wish I could mention Jeanne D'arc and Metal Gear AC!D 2, but I don't think there's a lot of cel-shading going on in either game, just some careful toon texturing.

So, pretend none of this is here...

Cel shading and cartoon looks with or without black outline are two different things as it's been pointed out.

If you want to know about an easy way to spot the difference then try to look at the self shadows cast by the objects/characters. Do they have hard edges as if someone drew them by hand? If yes then it is definitely Cel shaded...if not then it's probably not cel shaded even if it looks like a cartoon.

Grasshopper Manufacture: The Thread. killer7 is timeless. And Killer is Dead is one of the most underrated games from last gen and one of my favourite visually.

I'd love that too, but sadly Bizarre Creations was shut down so I don't think we'll ever see anything from the series in the future.

I asked back in 2012 if they would ever port it to Steam, but sadly I don't know if they still exist.

Nice to know that there is still a chance of seeing it on Steam :)
