Former SWG Lead Game Designer kills himself.

Could someone please help me? I'm having trouble finding the part in the rules where it says it's okay to joke about people's deaths in the Off Topic forum, but not the Gaming forum.

It's in the email they sent granting you your mod powers. Oh wait...

Anyway, rip. It's sad.

Hopefully he has found peace and his troubled mind is set free forever.

No, he hasn't found peace and his troubled mind isn't free because he's fucking dead.

Suicide isn't the answer ladies and gentlemen. My condolensces to his family and I wish he hadn't done it. People who are even thinking about it need help, and they need it quickly.

Also, anybody who's saying suicide is selfish or finds it hard to be sympathetic towards suicide only says that because they don't understand the mindset of somebody who does it. It's not natural. People don't commit suicide logically.

I think the only rule is if it is funny. There are ways to make tasteless and tasteful jokes about suicide. There is a difference between content and intent.

I believe it takes more balls to confront your problems and situations in life and overcome them, then to kill yourself. Killing yourself is not having the balls to get help, or speak with family members and friends for help.

You belive so? Well I guess you have experience in killing yourself then. How was it, easy?

boo-hoo, tbh.

That just shows how little meaningful contact you have with real people... but by all means keep showing your ass from behind your cheeto-dust covered keyboard, you're doing a great job.

People really should think about what they write on the Internet more. Just because anonymity let's you carelessly say whatever you want doesn't mean there aren't repercussions for others. (eg. being as big a dick as you can is becoming a really tired meme.) I'm not saying down with free speech or anything ridiculous, just asking people to be more conscience about what they're actually saying from a human standpoint. Just because all you see is a keyboard and a monitor doesn't mean there aren't people involved.

Some might say oblivion is freedom for his troubled mind. Not me. Some might though.

I realise it's the internet but I think the aloof reactions (that occasionally come across as an affectation) and crappy attempts at humour, for a bit of noteriety/attention, rub some up the wrong way. Of course most people won't comprehend the mindset that gives rise to suicide. I should hope not. But condemnation is a bit of a push (and I realise you haven't explicity stated your POV let alone condemning him). You're right, those attempting to commit suicide do need help.

Me? Generally speaking the idea that someone is that alone and that desperate to kill themselves - perhaps not having given any thought to what comes next* - sends a shiver down my spine. Speaking specifically, well all I've got is the statement from his bro that he was torn at by personal issues. Who knows what the fuck that means. But with plenty of cry babies on the internet and forums I'd say there's plenty of people who could do with understanding and an arm round them rather than condemnation.

Anyway, I'm just rambling. Nothing to see here. I don't even know why I've quoted ZealousD's post in it's entirety (except he makes some salient points).

Cheers.

SWG was the most fun I've ever had in an MMO. I was a ranger and have very fond memories of camping out in the desert and hanging out in the cantinas. My condolences to his family.

Blah blah blah...it's pretty pointless to debate the morality of suicide a lot of the time. Being suicidal is one of those things you can't understand that well unless you've been there.

Condolences to Jeff Freeman's family. Always sad to lose a game developer to such circumstances.

This makes me hate fanboys more and more. I'm almost embarassed to be a gamer if it was seriously fanboy hate that caused him to go over the edge. Regardless of how balanced he may be.

And fuck you if anyone makes a joke about class balances...

As many people in this thread has already stated, you have to be sick to take your own life. You are in an irrational state, and due to this state are unable to make decisions that many people in this thread rightly believe to be so sensible. It is unfortunate though that many people believe that the cure to depression is telling an irrational person to be rational again and that all things will get better from then on.

All of those who claim that the man is selfish for taking his own life, chew on this; Is he owned by anyone? Does any person victim of their own mental illness owe the world so much that they must endure the pain so you can feel warm and fuzzy about your own life? Is he or she selfish for destroying what is his or hers? Or are you the selfish one for demanding that they keep it - along with the pain - to spare your own feelings?

No, I'm not condoning suicide, I merely understand the illness that motivates those to see it as an option. I believe that anyone who sees suicide as an option is not thinking rationally and must be cared for until they are again well. I ask that those arrogant enough to suggest that a man or woman who takes their life is being selfish, think it over once more. I promise you, it is not the case.
